Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a 2016 Bollywood Hindi romantic drama film written and directed by Karan Johar. It features Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles.

Ae dil hai mushkil film released amidst a cloud of controversy and the expectation was that it would create a bang in keeping with the Diwali festive mood. However the movie turns out to be a damp squib. What has happened to Karan Johar’s midas touch is a million dollar question.

The film – Ae dil hai mushkil begins in a confused way and meanders meaninglessly as a mish mash of easily recognizable films from the not too distant past.

The story of Ae dil hai mushkil or an apology for one is about the distorted or convoluted romantic dalliances of a confused and confounded Ayan, played by Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir literally sleeps and cries his way to the end of the film. So you have your weepy hero number 1, ready to shed tears at the drop of a hat and you have the heroine number one, Anushka dancing and wriggling their way while pub crawling across London and Paris. Just when you think that the couple is a couple, enters another ‘hero’, hero number 2, in the form of Fawaad Khan who is Anushka’s ex-lover and whom she still loves. So what was she doing with our weepy hero? She just wanted to be friends it seems. So off goes our heroine number one with hero number 2, to get married all the way to Lucknow from London. The ‘good friend’, hero number 1 also lands up for the wedding and leaves in a huff after a song and dance routine.

Now it is time for heroine number 2 in the form of Aishwarya Rai to wait “Oh so”conveniently in the airport lounge hero number 1. They end up in cosy Vienna and just as you think that all is fine, enter Superhero (a cameo by Shahrukh Khan). It seems Heroine Number 2 is the ex- of Shah Rukh Khan.

So love in this movie- Ae dil hai mushkil is totally distorted and convoluted and confuses the viewer. Ranbir loves Anushka who wants to be good friends only. Anushka loves Fawaad who does not really seem to care either way. Ranbir on the rebounce loves Aishwarya who loves only Shahrukh. In between we have Lisa Hayden slipping in between the sheets.

The few bright spots of the endurance test of 3 hours include the bubbly performance of Anushka and the soul stirring music by Pritam. Arijit Singh sings his way to your heart by rendering some lilting songs.

Ae dil hai mushkil

To sum up Ae Dile Mushkil puts the viewers in a lot of mushkil as they wait to say Alvida to the movie. It is a big letdown for Diwali and it is advisable to save your money for Kal Ho Na Ho.

  1. I am little late. But I must say, this is a very balanced review, had I come across it earlier it would have helped me decide whether to go for the movie or not
