Here are 7 tips to keep yourself fit and healthy while travelling. This ultimate guide gives you tips on how to stay fit & healthy while traveling.

1. Wake up early

It is good to have an itinerary while travelling. This helps you plan your day and not miss any important site in that place. Therefore, it shouldn’t hurt you if you need to wake up earlier than expected – waking up 30 minutes earlier is recommended. As they say, “the early bird catches the worm.”  You will have enough time for your exercise routine before heading out for the day. Remember, it doesn’t need to be a straight one hour, just think of it as a warm-up exercise.

2. Pack your gear

It is better to pack an extra pound comprising of your workout gear (shoes, extra clothes, and jump rope), rather than having that pounds on yourself. Just make sure that it is something you can carry, and not your fitness machines!

3. Choose a healthy meal option

It is difficult to control your meal, especially if your friends and family members are tempting you to try something out. And if you are worried about gaining weight, then it is your decision to choose a healthy meal. Your meal should comprise of one vegetable, a protein source, and some fruits. But, it is okay just to take a bite of those processed foods such as pizza, dessert, just be mindful and not overeat. As long as you can balance it with your workout, then you’re going to be alright. Don’t forget to stay hydrated. Drink pure water.

4. Make an exercise plan

The best exercise plan should not be perfect; it should be individualized and should cater to your needs. And remember, you are travelling and enjoying. Therefore, your exercise plan should also be worth your travel.

First, include exercise that you can do in your surroundings. It is important to do a little research on travel information, so you know the routes that are perfect to have an exercise. Do pull-ups using tree branches, bus stop overhangs, or parking lot structures. You can also do squats and lunges in the park while enjoying your picnic.

Second, you don’t need exercise equipment while doing your exercise. How about trying 3 sets of 10 squats, push-ups, lunges, reverse crunches and backpack lifts? Remember, you don’t need to perform them in one sitting; you can divide them throughout the day.

5. Take every opportunity as an exercise

Whenever you are out to explore the sights of the place, don’t look at it as “where’s the gym” kind of place. Instead, enjoy the sites and play like a child! This means that you take every street, stairs, hill, mountain, etc. as part of your exercise. You can sprint with your kids in the park (like a race), run up the stairs with your friends, ride a bike, and swim at the beach. These sports can pump up your body, lose calories and keep you in shape. It’s like going to the gym!

6. It is more fun to involve your companion

One thing that can discourage you from exercise and a healthy meal while you travel is seeing your companions doing what they like, eating anything they want while you are stuck with your health regimen. In no time, you will also procrastinate in continuing your health plans and enjoying what the others are doing. Instead, you can be the motivator and switch their lifestyle into yours. You can do this by sharing with them some lifestyle news that you have recently read or seen, and it can be anything related to the place, like a good place to do yoga. Make your travel be an exercise excursion, try different things while sharing your workout experience with them.

7. Discipline

Your commitment is the most important aspect of keeping yourself fit. You must condition yourself that if you’re going to travel, you will not neglect your fitness plan. You must promise yourself that you will continue the journey of being healthy.

  1. Yes, we’re sure to take every opportunity to exercise. We will always walk over taking a taxi, as well as opt for a hike over a museum or movie… but those have their places too.

  2. After a week of overindulging at restaurants we need to work on this more! Most of our trips involve long hikes so we burn off lots of calories but this trip didn’t have any hiking. More salads and adding in some exercises on the free moments are some great ideas!

  3. Great tips! However, I try to stay healthy and exercise before going on holiday, and just relax while I’m on holiday, treat myself to lots of great food without worrying how many calories it has 🙂 We usually walk around and do lots of activities during the day, so it balances out 🙂

  4. Yessss soooo important to pack correctly. Being fit while traveling sometimes requires preparing for it. When I forget to pack my sneakers, it ends up messing up my workout plans somewhat.

  5. Nice job and tips. I need to pay more attention to the fitness aspect of my life and just keep prolonging it. Funny, I don’t walk a mile a day on some days but when travel is involved, 8-10 miles, no problem. let’s go! 😉

  6. When we stayed at the beach last year, it was easy to exercise. I got up before everyone every single morning and took the dog on a 45 minute walk up and down the beach. I wish I had that discipline with every trip I took.

    1. The same with us. Whenever we travel and there is a beach around, we make it a point to book a beach resort so that we can be the early risers and have the luxury of walking on the beach well before sunrise. And as the sun starts rising, it really is an awesome sight. You feel so good looking at the sky and the water of the sea below.

  7. Great tips. Whenever I travel I always do bodyweight exercises such as push ups, burpees, etc. Of course, I don’t do long training just for 20 minutes. It is much better than nothing.
