Top Reasons Why One Should Visit Pushkar, Rajasthan

Pushkar

Lakes have such an ethereal quality about them that I never fail to fall in love with them again and again whenever I visit them. Be it the mystical lakes in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas like the Tsomgo Lake in Sikkim, India, the seemingly endless Lake Kivu in Rwanda in East Africa, the many picturesque lakes of Switzerland like Lake Lucerne or the heavenly lake Pushkar in Rajasthan, India.

Pushkar

So it was no wonder that a combination of my own will and destiny conspired to pull me back to the enthralling lake at Pushkar within just seven months of visiting it. It was actually a business visit that had drawn me to Jaipur, Rajasthan but I could not resist the pleasure of traveling in a tangent to play a quick visit to Pushkar which is about 145 kilometers from Jaipur. Being an insatiable traveler who is always on the lookout for new experience and opportunities to capture them on camera, I am usually seen toting my DSLR, but on this trip, I had failed to carry my DSLR. Fortunately, my InFocus Turbo 5 came to the rescue and was up to the task. I was worried if the battery would sustain my erratic and hectic schedule as I had not been able to charge it for some time, but the battery proved to be a life saver, lasting for two days!

The InFocus Turbo 5 indeed ensured that this trip of mine to Pushkar was something special and enabled me to freeze some lovely memories of my whirlwind Pushkar trip for posterity.

Pushkar Lake

Pushkar

Pushkar lake fascinates me for two reasons, one, because for its long and interesting history and the second, its pristine and enchanting waters. This lake dates back to 4th century BC and beyond. It is one of the holiest lakes according to Hindu scriptures and is associated with Lord Brahma, the Hindu God of creation for whom a temple is dedicated.

Pushkar

The origin of the Pushkar lake in Hindu mythology is attributed to Lord Brahma who used his weapon which was a lotus flower to kill a demon who had been terrorizing people. In the process, the lotus flower fell to earth and springs of water gushed out from the spot where it fell. The water springs then gave rise to a lake which came to be known as Pushkar. “Pushpa” in Sanskrit means flower and “Kar” means hand, thus the name Pushkar, a combination of these two words.

Brahma Temple

Pushkar

The Brahma temple at Pushkar is one of the very few temples where Lord Brahma is worshiped. The original temple is supposed to have been built more than 2000 years ago. But the current structure that stands as the Brahma temple in Pushkar dates back to the 14th century. There is a total of over 500 temples that surround the Pushkar lake and mornings are indeed sublime at the ghats of the Pushkar lake as the melody of hundreds of temple bells merge with mellifluous sacred chants of the Vedas, creating an aura of divine bliss that can only be experienced and not described.

The Pushkar Fair

Pushkar

An annual colorful extravaganza that draws travelers in hordes is the Pushkar Camel fair also known as the Pushkar Camel Festival which is a camel and other domesticated animals market, where these animals are bought and sold. The camels look their colorful and enticing best. The 5-day long festival also includes camel races, exhibitions, and stalls selling stuff from colorful trinkets to local food stuff. The fair takes place on the banks of the Lake Pushkar and the region is awash in a splash of color, the women folk in their bright traditional dresses, the colorful turbans of the men, the gaily decorated camels, all merge together to form a kaleidoscopic spectacle. Of course, I was too early for the fair, this year it is scheduled for 23rd October and 4th November 2017, but I managed to capture a few vignettes of the streets of Pushkar, including a colorfully bedecked camel blushing as I clicked it.

Pushkar

I spent an enchanting but short time in Pushkar and was once again enthralled by the spiritual energy of the place. As I sat on a bench on one of the Ghats, gazing at the still waters of the lake, a strange calm descended on me and I felt my mind being cleansed magically and for some magic moments bereft of thought. I was brought back reluctantly from another plane by the ringing of my mobile phone.

I looked at my InFocus Turbo 5 and smiled to myself, the phone had stood by me on this trip with its reliable battery and had helped me capture some endearing pictures to cherish for a lifetime.
