Dwarka is a city that never fails to fascinate you, when you set feet here, it is as if you have been transported to another era or yuga, the Dwapara Yuga, the times of Krishna. Dwarka, a small city situated in the western state of Gujarat, India is a famous pilgrimage centre of India and is identified with the ancient kingdom of Krishna, one of the most popular and famous Hindu deities. The Legend

For many years, the legend has prevailed and Indian mythology is replete with accounts of how the original kingdom of Dwarka looked like. The Indian epic Mahabharata says that Dwarka had 900,000 royal palaces, all constructed with crystal and silver and decorated with emeralds. An elaborate system of boulevards, roads, marketplaces, assembly houses and temples connected the city.

Recent marine archaeological explorations of the sea here have thrown light on several stone structures of different shapes, also discovered were stone anchors and other artefacts. The exploration also found sandstone walls, a grid of streets and remains of a seaport, some 70 feet beneath the sea. The evidence points to the fact of the existence of a city some 9,000 years ago.

Dwarka

Is this the mythical and grand city of Dwarka, the kingdom of Krishna? Scientists, scholars and historians discuss and debate on this. The historicity of Krishna and Dwarka seems to have journeyed from the realms of mythology to history with the discovery of the submerged Dwarka city. However, a lot of work needs to be done by the authorities to establish this conclusively.

Dwarka

This is a small inhabited island off Dwarka, about 1 mile in the sea. There are regular boat services to get to the island from Okha Port which is about 32 kilometers from Dwarka. There is a 500-year-old temple dedicated to Krishna here, which is the main attraction. To us, however, the main point of interest was the fact that this island is considered to be a part of the ancient city that sunk under the sea. Most of the ancient ruins of the sunken city have been found around this area. It is quite literally a Dwarka Underwater Museum, that lies beneath the water of the Arabian Sea, holding secrets from the Dwapara Yuga, when the 8th avatar of Vishnu walked the earth in these parts.

Dwarka

As we sat in the boat and looked at the sea gushing past me, I peered down at the water and wondered about the grand city of Dwarka that lay buried deep under the sea. I wondered how it must have been in those times, how people lived their lives, how the city must have echoed to the happy sounds of children playing, the thumping of hooves as horses galloped with soldiers astride. A vibrant and throbbing kingdom. And then one day, everything washed away and submerged under water. Only to live as a legend and a myth till some day Man rediscovered its remains.

  1. You had me at sunken city! I think that’s my favorite part about wandering around ancient ruins or learning about lost cities, it’s fascinating to imagine the lives that once went on. I mean we’re looking at these remains, and we can only use our imagination to turn them into the places they once were and wonder what people like us were doing when they looked like they did!

    1. I WANT TO VISIT UNDERWATER DWARKA SITE. WHERE SHOULD I ENQUIRE? WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE? PLEASE HELP ME WITH REQUIRED INFORMATION. THANKS

  2. I had not heard of this, so I’m so glad I read your post. This sounds very cool! I don’t have an India trip planned yet, but this is going on the list of things I have to do when I finally book my flights.

  3. Thanks for shedding some light on archaeology. My partner is an ancient archaeologist, and I can honestly say that he doesn’t get the credit he deserves when it comes to adventure!

  4. I have seen this place in so many films andI cannot explain how bad I wanna see it for myself. Specially the temple. The temple gives me chills, its so hauntingly beautiful

  5. Nothing is quite as captivating as a tale of the rise and fall of power…This one however is even more grand given its scale and captivates the imagination! However is there much to see when you are there given that most of the finds are under the ocean? Do you know if its possible to dive there recreationally…? I’d love to do something like that one day!

  7. Just when I thought India could not surprise me any further! It just goes to show that there is an endless amount to see in this rich tapestry of a country 🙂 Sunken cities are something I know zero about – this, with its Krishna associations and possible 9000(!) year history looks like a great place to start.

  8. Very cool. I love that photo with the birds flying against the blue blue sky. Really stunning. Too bad the divers didn’t find any of that silver and emeralds to really make the tale travel. ^^

  9. I have heard of this and ever since then I have been wanting to go see it for myself. It is so close to my home town and can you beat this – I still have not managed to go there!! Am ashamed to say that but I hope to remedy it soon. Thanks for the video. Definitely an interesting watch.

  10. My former boss is named Dwarka hahaha.. To answer your question though, nope haven’t heard of it. The story of it reminds of the story of Atlantis. It amazes me that there’s a possibility that some cities that used to be progressive and used to be livable are not under water. I’d love to go diving there and discover the sunken city for myself. Man it would be an adventure.

  11. I had never heard of Dwarka or sunken temples. How amazing. It always makes me wonder what other marvelous things are lost deep in the sea or earth. Amazing!

  12. I’m fascinated about sunken cities and lost civilizations, but at the same time I feel like they should be left as is. I remember reading about Atlantis and Lemuria and how there are valid reasons that these ceased to exist. Nonetheless I can understand how the rest of this generation want to explore places such as Dwarka, discover artifacts and find out what really happened thousands of years ago.

  13. Wow, what a cool story! I love the mystery behind sunken cities, and the though that this one lies close enough to the surface to dive it has me fascinated! I’ll be looking more into this as a possible destination.

  14. Every time I read one of your posts I remember about how much I loved my trips to India. This place is amazing and the legend of it even better. I could almost imagine how the entire city looked like, with all those crystals shining in the sun. Who knows what else the water is hiding…

  15. It never ceases to amaze of the amount of history that lies under the seas. What a city it must have been back in the days when it was on land. It’s great learning about places that i have never heard of

  16. It is always interesting to discover such place. I wonder the same thing as well, how did they live back in the days when Dwarka was not covered with water yet. It boggles me. Such a mystery!

  17. This is really cool! I’ve read about Dwarka and the battle between darkness and light. It makes you think, doesnt it? I have to go check it out, diving in Dwarka would be incredible!

  18. Wow. I’ve never seen a sunken city before. I’ve snorkeled and seen a sunken ship in Palawan and I thought it was pretty cool. This is really interesting! Thanks for sharing.

  19. I love that every time I’m on your site I learn about a new place. Thank you. And Dwarka sounds fascinating. I wonder how many other places like this exist just below the waves??

  20. interesting..
I’ve heard sunken cities stories before but never on india. this is the first time I’ve read about this. I’m quite sure I’ll be visiting Drawka as you have mentioned it has a 2,500 year old stuff for Krishna. I’m kinda interested in Indian Gods and Goddesses.

  21. Scuba diving is one of my biggest passions. The main reason I love diving is the adventure, because you never know what you will found below the water surface. In the past years I’ve collected a series of underwater photos which I proudly store in the logbook, along with all my diving logs. It’s cool that I can also search new dive spots or even add my own.
