Udaipur – A Brief History

Udaipur Travel Guide – History, Attractions, What Not to Miss
Painting at Udaipur Palace

Udaipur takes its name from the man who founded it, Udai Singh II, who was the Maharana of Mewar, a region which formed part of the present-day state of Rajasthan. Udai Singh II is also the father of Maharana Pratap, one of India’s popular and well-known heroes from history.

Chittorgarh, the capital of the Mewar Kingdom was under siege by Akbar in the mid 16th century. It was at this time that the then ruler of Mewar, decided to shift his capital to a more secure location and the contours of Udaipur emerged on the horizon. According to a myth, a saint was meditating on a hill near a lake that is now famous as Pichhola Lake, this saint advised Udai Singh II to build his capital there. The locale was ideal, surrounded by the Aravalli ranges, and dotted with forests and lakes, the place offered natural and secure boundaries against invaders.

Thus was born the city of Udaipur. The beautiful city of lakes remained the capital of the Mewar Kingdom for about 259 years with successive kings independently ruling it and then in the early 19th century, it became a princely state under British rule. The kingdom of Mewar including Udaipur became part of the state of Rajasthan after India’s independence in 1947.
