Germany is a country rich in history, and with so many castles you might think you’re in a Disney film when you see them. But I loved everywhere I went in Germany, not just their castles. After three amazing years in the country, I have to say there wasn’t an excursion that I regretted, and I constantly want to go back and explore Germany!
The following list has my favorite 15 things to do in Germany, but it is not all-encompassing. I urge you to look elsewhere and to dive deep into the suggestions I list here since most of them have sub-adventures.
So here we go and explore Germany and find out the 15 best things to do in Germany!
Neuschwanstein Castle
The inspiration for the Disney castle, Neuschwanstein has quite the history and some amazing architecture. Originally a home meant for Ludwig the 2nd of Bavaria, it’s become one of the most popular castles to visit in Europe, attracting in roughly 1.4 million tourists a year. It’s honestly not a destination that can be done justice through writing. Zugspitze Massif
Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak is nestled in the Alps at 2,962 meters above sea level. There’s much more than just a high peak to see there. Below the mountain is the city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with multiple other tourist sites phenomenal places to eat. At the peak is a small ski resort and eateries (an important part for me). Berlin Wall
Once a wall that was used to divide Germany, is now nothing more than a spectacle to remind us of the history the country overcame. The Berlin Wall is a phenomenal experience not because it’s an astonishing sight, but because history can be felt. While a lot of the wall was dismantled and many pieces taken as souvenirs, there are still areas left where the wall stands as a reminder. I strongly encourage seeing it if you’re planning a trip to Berlin.

Oktoberfest
I think we all know what Oktoberfest is. German festivals (not just Oktoberfest) are always a wonderful experience no matter the city they’re held in. Oktoberfest, on the other hand, is a different kind of festival that has become the must-have experience on your German bucket list. Delicious German beer, awesome activities around the fest, and cool outfits! Even if you can’t make Oktoberfest, visiting a fest while you’re in Germany is a must! BMW Museum
This one is on the list for the auto fanatics, but it’s also still a great museum to visit even if you’re not. You’ll be surprised to find out that it’s not just “another museum”, but a pretty awesome experience. The museum is laid outflowing through the history of BMW and its innovations throughout their company’s lifespan. With a plethora of examples of amazing engineering, I guarantee you won’t regret going.
Brandenburg Gate
Visiting the Brandenburg Gate is a great addition to your trip if you’re also going to be visiting the Berlin Wall since it’s located in the same city. As it’s linked to the wall, it stands as a sign of unity and an important monument for German citizens. If you’re also an avid traveler, you may notice it slightly resembles Greek architecture. It would be an astute observation because the actual construction of the Brandenburg Gate was inspired by architecture in Athens Acropolis. Cologne Cathedral
Since construction started in 1248, the Cologne Cathedral has stood tall and a testament to the beauty of gothic architecture. Ironically, building stopped around the 16th century and wasn’t fully finished until the late 1800s. This cathedral waited six centuries to be built and even survived World War Two, it is easily one of the most historic and fascinating cathedrals to visit.
Black Forest
The Black Forest is actually a large portion of Germany at over 2,320 sq miles. It is filled with small towns and interesting attractions, my favorite being Baden-Baden. It’s also a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding, as Feldberg is its highest mountain with beautiful snow during the winter.

Christmas Markets
This is a great addition to the list because it doesn’t really depend on where in Germany you go, but when. During the late winter months, Christmas Markets begin popping up in towns and cities all over Germany. They offer a variety of small activities, shops, and glühwein! So, no matter the destination you have in mind, if you’re traveling in December then definitely be on the lookout for a Christmas Market!
Europa Park
If you’re into theme parks and exciting rides, then Europa Park is the place to be. I highly recommend checking out their website as there are way too many attractions to cover in this short post, but I guarantee there will be something there for everyone.
Heidelberg
This is a smaller/lesser-known destination and thankfully doesn’t get too crowded. The city of Heidelberg is a perfect example of great German food and a simple site seeing. Above the city rests the Heidelberg Castle, and like most in Germany, it has so much to offer. There is a long history behind the castle’s construction and why it was built, and I can’t recommend exploring it enough.

Konigsee
Maybe you’re in Germany to do some sightseeing but also want to just relax a little? Konigsee is a great place to take it easy and enjoy nature. If you find yourself in the southeast corner of Bavaria then be sure to find your way to this “Kings Lake”, as there are options for boating and relaxing all day!
Rothenburg
A fairytale town in Bavaria Germany, Rothenburg is a well-preserved town featuring much of the “old style” of building. It’s a favorite for millions of tourists each year and it’s not hard to see why with how beautiful the town is. Also, be sure to look for “Rothenburg ob der Tauber” as there are a few Rothenburg’s in Germany and you may end up at the wrong one otherwise!

Rugen
Germany’s largest island and a must-see view, Rugen offers plenty to do for anyone looking to relax and experience German culture. It offers 37 miles of soft, sandy beaches with a countryside that is sure to astonish. Maybe you want beaches but not for the whole trip? If you’re looking to relax and have some fun, visit during the Stortebeker Festival and enjoy some of the German’s great historical storytelling and good food.
Englischer Garten
If you’re travels take you to Munich or near it, a walk through the Englischer Garten is a perfect way to spend the afternoon. One of the largest urban parks in the world, it offers a wonderful place to have a picnic and really take in the German air.

Its almost September halfway and I miss being in Germany for Octoberfest. Neuschwanstein Castle looks straight out of a disney movie setting.
