The Mysore Dasara celebrations originated in the year 1610 when Raja Wodeyar I started the celebration of the triumph of Sri Chamundi Devi over Mahishasura, gradually the celebrations evolved and grew in scale and grandeur to become the famous Mysore Dasara festival as we know it today. The inspiration for the public Dasara celebrations at Mysuru undoubtedly came from the Dasara celebrations at Hampi by the Vijayanagara Kings.
The Mahanavami Dibba at Hampi stands as a silent witness to the grand Dasara celebrations that Hampi witnessed hundreds of years ago.
The Wodeyars attribute their ascendancy to the throne of Mysuru to the benevolence and guidance of Sri Chamundeshwari Devi, who is the presiding deity of the Sri Chamundeshwari Devi Shaktipeeth on the Chamundi Hill of Mysore. At the centre of the Mysuru Dasara celebrations is Sri Chamundeshwari Devi.

The festival of Dasara is celebrated in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin (Aswayuja), which generally coincides with the months of September-October, according to the Gregorian calendar. The festival is called Nada Habba or State Festival.
The Mysore Dasara celebrations begin with the worship of Sri Chamundeshwari Devi at Chamundi Hill on the morning of the first day. On this day the goddess is worshipped as Shailputri Devi, the daughter of the mountains. In the evening there is puja of Sri Chamundeshwari Devi at the Mysore Palace. The Nandi Dhwaja at the Balarama Dwar of the Mysore Palace is also worshipped.
The city of Mysury resonates with various cultural programmes including folk dances and folk music of Karnataka, during the Dasara celebrations. There are classical music concerts, and the Police Band is in attendance. Kusti Spardhe or wrestling competitions are another highlight of the Dasara celebrations of Mysore. The Dasara exhibition is another highlight of the Mysore Dasara celebrations, it was started in 1880 by King Chamaraja Wodeyar X and continues to this day.
The exhibition has stalls that sell clothes, utensils, household articles, food, clothes and much more. There is also a play area with a giant Ferris wheel which is a major attraction for the young and old alike.

One of the highlights of the Mysuru Dasara is the Mysore Dasara Lighting of the Amba Vilas Palace. The palace glitters like a collection of jewels when it is lit up with 100,000 light bulbs on all days of the Dasara festival. The illumination can be seen from 7-10 PM on all ten days of the celebrations. Apart from the palace, the entire city of Mysuru is brilliantly lit and decorated, and wears a festive look.
Khas Durbar At Mysore Palace – Experience Mysuru Dasara Celebrations
Khas or private Durbar is an important aspect of the Mysuru Dasara celebrations. The titular king of Mysore will be holding a private Durbar with special invitees. He will be sitting on the golden throne in full ceremonial attire. The Khas Durbar begins with rituals like Kalasa Puja and Simhasana Puja, after which the titular king would ascend the throne for the Burbar.
Experience Mysuru Dasara Celebrations – Ayudha Puja
The ninth day of Dasara celebrations marks Ayudha Puja when the royal sword is worshipped, and is taken in a procession of elephants, camels, and horses.
Vijayadashami – Mysore Dasara Celebration | Mysore Dasara Ambari
The grand highlight of the Myuru Dasara Celebrations can be witnessed on the 10th day which is celebrated as Vijayadashmi. It is on this day that the grand elephant procession known as Jumboo Savaari takes place. Gaily decorated elephants march in procession from the Mysore Palace to Bannimantapa.
The cynosure of all eyes during the Mysore Dasara Procession is the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari placed in a golden howdah, known as Chinnada Ambari in Kannada, weighing 750 kg. The idol of Sri Chamundeshwari Devi sits astride the lead elephant, during the procession. The procession features tableaux depicting the culture of Mysore, dancers and musicians, decorated elephants, camels, and horses.
The colourful procession winds its way through the streets of Mysore city, culminating at a place called Bannimantapa, where stands a Banni Tree. Here the Banni tree is worshipped. It is believed that it was in a Banni Tree that the Pandavas had hidden their weapons during their agnatvasa. The kings of Mysore used to worship the Banni tree before proceeding to any battle.
As dusk gives way to darkness, the Dasara celebrations come to an end with a brilliant torchlight parade at the Bannimantap grounds.
Dasara Dolls Mysore / Mysore Dasara Gombe
One of the most fascinating customs that one can see during the Mysore Dasara celebrations is the Mysore Dasara Dolls. The Gombe Thotti or Dolls Pavilion in the Mysore Palace, used to be a place where traditional dolls were displayed during the Dasara festival. Every house in Mysore and Karnataka. The dolls are beautifully arranged on a stepped platform.
Usually, the platform has nine levels to denote the nine nights of Navratri. At the centre of the doll display, is a pair of dolls, one male and the other female, dressed in traditional Mysore attire. These dolls are known as Pattada Gombe and are bequeathed traditionally from a mother to her daughter.
Other dolls that form part of the Mysore Dasara dolls ensemble include figurines of Gods and Goddesses, demi-gods, kings and queens, saints, and dolls depicting scenes from everyday life.
Yuva Dasara – Experience Mysuru Dasara Celebrations
