Summer greetings from Sandy & Vyjay! Summer is upon us, and the mercury levels have begun an upward spiral. We are lucky to be in Bengaluru, which is relatively cooler, though it is definitely not what it used to be a couple of decades ago. Despite the scorching summers, it is a time of fun too. This is the time when the King of fruits, the Mango, takes centre stage. Mangoes are synonymous with India, though they originated some 6000 years ago and were grown in the region encompassing what is now Myanmar, Bangladesh, and the north-eastern parts of India. The journey of the mangoes then took them to Africa and later on to places like Brazil, the Caribbean, and Mexico.
Did you know that India has over 1500 varieties of mangoes, and the one considered to be the best is Alphonso or Hapus?
If summer is the time for mangoes, it is also the time for loads of fun. Vacations are on, the stress of exams is left behind, and for kids, it is playtime! Families plan their summer getaways to spend quality time together and head off to cooler climes. Some of the most popular summer getaways are hill stations like Shimla, Manali, Ooty, Kodaikanal, Darjeeling, Nainital, and so on. So, where are you headed this summer?

Did you know that the word MARKET may have Kannada origins? Some believe that the etymology of this word is linked to the Kannada words “Marata,” which means “Sell or Sale,” and the word “Katte,” which means a sitting place like a stone bench, etc.. Whatever the case, we look at the unique heritage of the Devaraja Market of Mysore. The market’s origin dates back more than a century. The structure of the original market has weakened, and the government is mulling its demolition and rebuilding. If this happens, it would mean the end of an era, as the original old-world charm would cease to exist. Read more →

A restaurant serving delectable dosas since 1938. Taste that has wooed generations with its original flavours. We visited this legendary restaurant called Old Original Vinayaka Mylari, whose dosas are legendary. We had heard about them from our father, who had spent his childhood in Mysore, so the visit was special for us in more ways than one. The dosas were fluffy and had a unique texture, while the idlis melted in the mouth. On your next visit, do pay a visit to this restaurant, which is part of Mysore’s timeless legacy. Read more →
Ooty is one of South India’s most popular hill stations. Come summer, people from the cities make a beeline for it to escape from the heat of the plains. Of late, Ooty has faced the brunt of overcrowding, and its pristine nature has deteriorated, however, it still retains its popularity. There are many resorts and hotels, but we personally liked the Lake View Hotel, which we have stayed in a couple of times. If you are planning a trip to Ooty, do check out our review of the hotel.
