The old gives way to the new, much like familiar roads fading into the horizon as new paths unfold ahead. The past steps aside, leaving behind memories etched like maps of journeys taken, and time moves on in its quiet, unrelenting flow. As one year draws to a close, the sun rises on 2026. Standing at this threshold, we pause to look back at the journeys that shaped us—the highs and the lows, the moments of wonder and uncertainty—and step forward with optimism, ready to embrace the promise of new destinations, new stories, and new beginnings. Personally, 2025 was a year of deepening our understanding of the world through travel. Each journey broadened our perspective and enriched our outlook—from the serene backwaters of Kerala and the rhythmic waves of Puri, to the regal splendour of Jaipur, the verdant calm of Sakleshpur, the timeless charm of Udupi, the impeccable hospitality of Gujarat, and the harmonious symphony of landscapes, culture, and history that unfolded across Sri Lanka. At the macro level, for India, 2025 was a year of travel, and movement on an unprecedented scale. From sacred rivers to crowded runways, the country witnessed both the promise and the pressure of a nation on the move. The year began with a reminder of India’s unique travel DNA. The Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj transformed the act of travel into a collective pilgrimage, drawing millions across states and generations. Trains ran at capacity, highways pulsed with traffic, and temporary cities rose along the ghats. It was a powerful affirmation that in India, travel is as much about faith and belonging as it is about leisure. Beyond pilgrimage, domestic tourism continued its remarkable ascent. Heritage circuits, wildlife destinations, and experiential stays—from homestays to tented retreats—saw sustained demand. Indians travelled more frequently, more confidently, and increasingly within the country, reshaping the tourism economy far beyond traditional hotspots. Globally, shifting travel currents also favoured India. As the Middle East rose as a major tourism hub, Indian outbound travel diversified, while inbound interest in India’s culture, wellness, and spiritual offerings remained resilient. Yet, 2025 also mirrored global anxieties—overcrowding, climate disruptions, and the growing strain on infrastructure. These vulnerabilities became impossible to ignore in the final quarter of the year. At the height of festive travel, an operational crisis at IndiGo, India’s largest airline, disrupted the nation’s skies. The enforcement of stricter pilot duty-time norms—essential for long-term safety—revealed gaps in planning and preparedness. Widespread delays and cancellations affected thousands of travellers, prompting regulatory intervention and a broader public debate on airline dominance, passenger rights, and system resilience. As the year closed, airports once again filled with holiday crowds, and destinations recorded strong year-end numbers. Yet 2025 left the Indian travel ecosystem with a clear message: growth alone is no longer enough. Capacity must keep pace with ambition, safety must underpin scale, and infrastructure must evolve alongside demand. Travel in India is firmly back. What 2025 made clear is that its next chapter must be smarter, safer, and more sustainable.
