The Pacific Northwest is one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in the United States. Stretching from the beaches and forests of Oregon in the south to the frozen lakes of British Columbia, Canada in the north, there are a vast and hugely varied amount of stunning landscapes and adventurous things to do in this wonderful corner of America.
The Pacific Northwest is not just mountains, forests and the great outdoors, of course. In Seattle and Portland, the area has two of the most interesting and exciting cities in the United States, full of art, culture, food, and nightlife. Overall, the Pacific Northwest offers a wonderful balance of outdoor adventure and urban exploration.
The sheer volume of sights and experiences available can be daunting, but one way to get the best of the Pacific Northwest is by taking a cruise from Seattle and seeing the sights in comfort and style. Here are some of the highlights of this wonderful region.

Places to Visit in North America’s Pacific Northwest
Northern Cascades
The Northern Cascades are 789 square miles of forest, wetlands, lakes and ice-topped mountains. It is a remarkable place to explore, not least because it is one of the least understood geological formations in the United States. Hiking, climbing and bicycling here can be a wonderful experience.
Mount St Helens
Famous for its devastating eruption in 1980, Mount St Helens is an awe-inspiring sight. Now the ash has cleared, activities on the mountain have resumed, and the chance to zip-line or ride a horse on an active volcano, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, is not to be missed.
Crater Lake
Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the US, and the seventh deepest in the world. Formed thousands of years ago when Mt Mazama erupted and collapsed, it is now a picturesque and peaceful place, with an amazing system of over 40 caves. Check out Wizard Island at its centre, the former peak of Mt Mazama!
Columbia River
While not quite on the level of the Grand Canyon, the Columbia River Gorge is a pretty impressive sight. Running for 80 miles through the Cascade Mountain Range, it is a National Scenic Area and the perfect place to camp, hike or just drink in the awesome beauty of the natural world.
Portland
Portland has a reputation as a town full of hippies and hipsters, but this is a source of pride for the residents! It is a seriously interesting city, full of bars, restaurants, cafes, and bookshops, and is certainly one of the best places in the country for connoisseurs of food and drink. It’s also full of independent bars and galleries, making it a haven for art lovers.
Seattle
Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest, and the perfect base from which to explore the region. It is a vibrant, buzzing town, surrounded by the extraordinary landscapes of the region, which gives it a wonderful two-for-one feeling.
Don’t miss the Seattle Centre with its Space Needle and marvellous museums, the Pike Place Market, one of America’s oldest farmer’s markets, or the fascinating Museum of Flight. Given Washington’s amazing vineyards and wineries, it would also be disastrous to leave without sampling some of the exquisite local wines or taking advantage of the farm-to-table ethos behind Seattle’s thriving artisanal dining scene.
