Naukuchiatal
If you travel about 25 kilometres away from one of the most well-known hill stations in Uttarakhand, Nainital, you reach a beautiful place with the intriguing name of Naukuchiatal. The name does sound like somewhat of a tongue twister at first, but if you break the words and understand the meaning, it becomes quite easy to remember and pronounce the word Naukuchiatal.
The word is made up of “Nau” which in Hindi means “Nine”, and “Tal” which translates into a lake. Naukuchiatal is named after a nine-cornered lake that occupies centre stage in the place.
The lake looks ethereal, nestled in a valley and surrounded by hills ornamented with greenery. The place is very serene and the calm of the place is infectious. An ideal setting for a couple to discover or rediscover each other. Naukuchiatal makes for one of the most perfect honeymoon destinations in Kumaon Uttarakhand.
There are many resorts in Naukuchiatal situated around the lake. KMVN (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) has a beautiful property with lovely cottages that almost jut into the lake and afford spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding hills. This is where we stayed during our recent visit to Naukuchiatal.

Hanuman temple is a 52 feet high statue of the Hindu Monkey God Hanuman. The temple is designed along the lines of the cave-like temple of Vaishno Devi in Jammu, India.
Mukteshwar is located about 20 kilometres from Naukuchiatal and is home to a 350-year-old ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated on top of a hill at a height of about 2,285 meters and affords breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountain ranges.
Sat Tal or Seven Lakes is a mystical lattice of seven interconnected lakes which are fed by underwater springs. The lakes set in the midst of dense pine forests against the backdrop of mountains is a haven for nature lovers and a paradise for bird lovers.

“Switzerland”, is the name that comes to mind for most couples when they think of a honeymoon. Switzerland with the presence of the majestic Alps is, without a doubt, a magical destination and the dream destination for honeymooners from all over the world.
But did you know that there is a place in India which so enthralled Mahatma Gandhi with its beauty that he dubbed it the “Switzerland of India”? That place is Kausani. A place that mesmerizes with its enchanting beauty. A place that sows the seeds of imagination in a poet’s mind and compels them to pen words of romantic poetry. Sumitranandan Pant, one of the most famous masters of Hindi Poetry was born in the heavenly region of Kausani.
Kausani provides a ringside view to the spectacular magic of nature. The snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas seduce you with their shimmering peaks as the light creates a kaleidoscopic pattern across the skies.
A couple can spend hours losing themselves in each other’s eyes as well as in the panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks Trisul, Nandadevi, and Panchchuli. And when they feel they have had enough of the peaks, they can turn to the sky and on a clear night indulge in stargazing with stars in their eyes.
We were smitten with the beauty of Kausani which seemed to have embraced us with a tight and desperate hug of lovers meeting after a long time. We had a wonderful stay at one of the beautiful wooden cottages of the KMVN (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) rest house, one of the best honeymoon hotels in Uttarakhand.
The main door, windows, and balcony of the cottage directly offered a panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges. A great view to wake up in the morning in Kausani, one of the most idyllic honeymoon destinations in Kumaon Uttarakhand and definitely one of the most romantic places in Uttarakhand too!

Anasakti Ashram is a peaceful place with nice views of the Himalayan ranges. This is the place where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visit to Kausani in 1929. He wrote his commentary on Anasakti in the serene environs of this place. The Anasakti Ashram has a meditation hall and museum.
Sumitranandan Pant’s Birthplace is a historic and old ancestral house where the great Hindi poet was born. The place is preserved and has rare pictures of the poet as well as his personal collection of books.

Tea Gardens of Chaukori and nearby Berinag are known for a unique and ancient tea that was very popular in China.

These were beautiful pictures and it was fun learning about a new place and I wish I could visit as it seems so calming and we never had a Honeymoon. Some great ideas in your post to escape to the hills. Uttarakhand is our favourite destination for quick getaways because of the train connectivity from NCR. I love Sitlakhet and have been to a few other areas mentioned above. Would love to go to Kausani soon.

I would love to relax here, this part of India is really beautiful and could see myself chilling here. This also looks like the ideal location to see the sunrise and sunset over the landscape…truly magicial.
I have never been to Uttarakhand, but it doesn’t fit my mental image of India. Rhododendrons and hydrangea are something I would expect to find in the mountains of Appalachia and not tropical India. I definitely see how Uttarakhand could make for a unique and delightful experience for your honeymoon.
I haven’t been to India and I got married almost 15 years ago so haven’t had to think about honeymoons in forever, but I think if I were choosing a location now in India, it would be Naukuchiatal or Kausani (or both) I think. Naukuchiatal because I would love to see gorgeous views of the Himalayans and it would fit into my favorite months for weddings too! Kausani because you had me at Switzerland. l love Switzerland and so I would love to see the Switzerland of India!

Sitlakhet also appeals to me, with the wooded habitat, though I’m not a camper or trekker so perhaps not. The one that I really want to visit most is Chaukori, I love the idea of staying amidst tea gardens and forests.
What a gorgeous part of India! I love the green mountainous terrain, and the views towards the Himalayas are breathtaking. Both Sitlakhet and Bhimtal Lake look like places I’d like to visit.
Wow! I can see why Switzerland would come to mind. The scenery is quite alpine. India is full of surprises and all of these destinations are amazing. I would be hard pressed to choose. I would want to visit them all!
We originally thought of getting married in Switzerland, but the legal hoops you need to jump through quickly deleted it from our list. I have to agree that Switzerland countryside is magical, so Kausani is another place I should see. I’m a huge fan of homestays, but I don’t know that I’d want to do that for a honeymoon. Although, you give so many honeymoon options, it seems like it’d be worth it to come back every year.
All these places are absolutely beautiful, and perfect for honeymooners for sure! I’m not sure which of them are my favourite. I do like the look of Kausani, just because of the nature reference to Switzerland! I’d love to visit India one day and see any of these places, and with my partner too!

Look like very beautiful honeymoon destination, though as a very happily married person, for 20 years, I am more inclined to want to visit simply to see the Himalayas as a backdrop. Your photos are fantastic and a perfect visual tease.

These pictures are totally out of the world. So dreamy and beautiful those places are. Loved Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal the most. The misty mountains, green valleys and pristine waters…definitely ignites the romance
