Feasting on a Vidyarthi Bhavan Masala Dosa is one of those Bangalore experiences that gives you a feel of the old-world charm of the city. It transports you back to another Bangalore. A Bangalore that was not running at breakneck speed, a Bangalore that was not bursting at the seams, a Bangalore where life weaved a leisurely pattern. The Vidyarthi Bhavan Masala Dosa transports you back a few decades to a time when food was meant to be savoured, and not fast food to be devoured on the fly.

Vidyarthi Bhavan Masala Dosa – History

Vidyarthi Bhavan

The genesis of Vidyarthi Bhavan dates back to a few years before independence. It was started as a small canteen that served the student community of the area in 1943-1944. The “Vidyarthi,” in the name of the restaurant alludes to this fact. The restaurant was started by a gentleman named Venkatramana Ural who hailed from a place near Udupi, known as Saligrama.

Later on, the brother of Venkatramana Ural was at the helm of affairs at the restaurant which had become a really popular eatery in the area. In 1970, there was a change in the management of the restaurant with Ramakrishna Adiga coming to the helm of affairs at Vidyarthi Bhavan. However, to the loyal patrons of the restaurant, Vidyarthi Bhavan retained its timeless charm, be it in its flagship dosas, the service, or its piping hot coffee.

The old-world charm of the place is still enduring, with minor changes in the restaurant’s decor. It still stands behind rows of flower sellers, in Gandhi Bazar, beckoning connoisseurs with the heady aroma emanating from the crackling dosas being roasted on huge ladles, with generous dollops of ghee.

If you head to Vidyarthi Bhavan today, there are chances you will have to wait for your turn to enter the restaurant, especially on weekends and holidays. Once you enter the restaurant and head to your table, you will notice the waiters scurrying around deftly balancing a large number of plates that hold the precious masala dosas.

As you give your order to the eager waiter and settle back in your chair, you cannot but help look around at the people sitting around you. There is an office-goer, cradling a helmet in his lap while the masala dosa soaked in chutney commands his entire attention. Next to him is an old man relishing a cup of filter coffee with nonchalance and the look of being a regular at the restaurant.

The waiter arrives juggling plates of masala dosas and he places yours in front of you. The butter on the dosa is melting and trickling down like a rivulet, the smoking hot dosa emits an aroma that you cannot resist. But before you dig into the dosa, the waiter is back. He pours chutney on your plate, and that is the signal for you to dive into the ecstatic world of the Vidyarthi Bhavan Masala Dosa.

After you polish off one masala dosa, your craving for another one grows, never mind the Vidyarthi Bhavan dosa calories! It is appropriate to wash down the Vidyarthi Bhavan Masala dosa with a hot cup of steaming filter coffee, served in traditional steel glass and tumbler. You will be interrupted during your coffee by the waiter who wets a small strip of paper with water and sticks it on your table. That is the bill. You can pick it up and pay up at the cash counter near the door. And you leave, with an air of extreme satisfaction, but you know that you will be back more.

  1. I am not a big dosa fan but I do love a good masala dosa. I have never visited Vidyarti Bhavan even though I am born and brought up in Bangalore as it is on the other part of Bangalore. I have heard so much about it and its high time I visit and eat that masala dosa.
