The “Vidyarthi,” in the name of the restaurant alludes to this fact. The restaurant was started by a gentleman named Venkatramana Ural who hailed from a place near Udupi, known as Saligrama.

Later on, the brother of Venkatramana Ural was at the helm of affairs at the restaurant which had become a really popular eatery in the area. In 1970, there was a change in the management of the restaurant with Ramakrishna Adiga coming to the helm of affairs at Vidyarthi Bhavan. However, to the loyal patrons of the restaurant, Vidyarthi Bhavan retained its timeless charm, be it in its flagship dosas, the service, or its piping hot coffee.

The old-world charm of the place is still enduring, with minor changes in the restaurant’s decor. It still stands behind rows of flower sellers, in Gandhi Bazar, beckoning connoisseurs with the heady aroma emanating from the crackling dosas being roasted on huge ladles, with generous dollops of ghee.
