President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant into law in 1864, providing protection the Yosemite area and setting it aside for public use. The most direct route from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park is via Interstate 580. There are plenty of spots along the way to stop for meals, gas and to stretch your legs (or walk the dogs!).

Entering Yosemite National Park California

Yosemite has a total of five entrances: four on the west side of the park, and one on the lesser-visited east side of the park. If you’re coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, the most direct entrance is the Big Oak Flat Entrance, located right on CA State Route 120. The entrance is open from May through October from 8 AM to 5 PM local time. Just inside the entrance is the Big Oak Flat Information Station, which is a great place to get more information on the park. The itinerary shown below is based on using this entrance, so adjust accordingly if needed.

Other entrances to the park may be more convenient for visitors from the south or from the east. These other entrances also provide closer access to different parts of the park, so part of your entry strategy should be based on what you want to see first. Your Itinerary For One Day In Yosemite National Park California

Approximately four miles into the park, you’ll find the Merced Groves Trail Head. If you need to stretch your legs more or burn off some energy, this is a great place to start. This trail affords you an easy and flat three-mile (5 Km) hike through a small, quiet grove of sequoia trees. You’ll find the trailhead just east and south of the intersection of Big Oak Flat Road and Yosemite National Park Road.

If driving is more your style, there’s an excellent scenic outlook not too far east from the Merced Groves Trail Head. Continue east on Big Oak Flat Road until you see a turn for Crane Flat Fire Road. Head north here, and you’ll get to Crane Flat Lookout. The lookout has an excellent 360-degree of the entire park, and you’ll be able to soak in all its beauty from here.

As you depart this area, you may find that you need gas or snacks. Fortunately, the Crane Flat Gas Station is just a couple miles away. It’s located at the fork where Route 120 splits off from Big Oak Flat Road. After filling up your car and your stomach, you have a decision to make: whether to take the northerly or southerly route through the park. Generally, following either route will take you six to eight hours, depending on how often you stop to sightsee or to hike.

The Northerly Route

The northerly route becomes Tioga Road, which is only open from April through mid-November. In general, this route is more suitable for those wishing to drive through the park instead of stopping to hike and explore. There are fewer hiking trails along Tioga Road, and the road is closer to the more mountainous area of the park.

A great place to stop along this route is at Tuolumne Meadows. This is one of the highest-elevation areas in the park and provides a dramatic and beautiful vista point. From here, visitors can look out over the mountains and valleys around the area, and watch the Tuolumne River as it flows by. This is a great place to be later in the day as the earth begins to cool and clouds form.

If you’re in the mood for something to eat after exploring the Meadows, the Tuolumne Meadows Grill is close by. Stop here to relax and get refreshed, and then continue on with your journey. You can also stop at the nearby Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center to get updates on Yosemite National Park weather and road conditions, upcoming programs or interpretive talks, and so on.

The Southerly Route

Although the southern route doesn’t take you as far into Yosemite as the northern route, it affords you some distinct advantages. First, there are more hiking trails along the southern route. Second, it gives you some of the most iconic and well-known views inside the park. This is my personal favorite route for these reasons and many more.

Big Oak Flat Road turns south at the fork near the Crane Flat Gas Station area. Follow Big Oak Flat Road along the southern route for a great day of sightseeing and adventure. The route roughly parallels Crane Creek for part of its run. The creek will be to the south of you, so you’ll always know where you are.

About six miles into the southern route, you’ll encounter the trailhead for the Old Big Oak Flat Road Trail. The trail is a 9.3 mile (15 Km) out and back trail that is rated at a moderate difficulty. This trail will take you through areas where you can see wildlife and beautiful wildflowers in season.

Further along the route, you’ll find various hiking trails of all lengths and skill levels. These include the El Capitan Trail, Yosemite Valley Loop Trail, Yosemite Falls Trailhead, Lower Yosemite Falls Trailhead, and Sentinel/Cook’s Meadow Loop. As you hit the end of Big Oak Flat Road at Yosemite Village and turn back toward the west, swing to the south by taking Southside Drive. The drive affords you excellent views of Glacier Point and Sentinel Dome. As you continue along Southside Drive it splits off, and the southern fork turns into Wawona Drive. Don’t miss the chance to stop at Bridalveil Falls to check out the beautiful falls and the area surrounding it, and to take the short hike towards the falls area. There’s an easy hiking trail that leads to the falls. You can even walk up steps to get close to the waterfall itself and catch some of the sprays as it rains down. It’s quite cool and refreshing on a summer day. That said, do be careful here as the water from the falls can make some areas slippery and hard to navigate. If you’re here in the winter, be aware of getting wet under the falls and possibly suffering from hypothermia.

Just a couple miles away from Bridalveil Falls is my all-time favorite view inside Yosemite – the Tunnel View. This view looks down into the Yosemite Valley, and you’ll see El Capitan on your left and Half Dome on the right. I never get tired of this view – and if you’re into astrophotography, this is an excellent place to capture views of the stars and the silhouettes of the mountains.

As you reach the end of Southside Drive, you’ll encounter a sizeable parking area. Park here and take the short walk back to Mirror Lake. Most tourists don’t take this walk, and as far as I’m concerned that’s a huge mistake. The lake is surrounded by high rock walls and so is shielded from wind, which makes its surface mirror-smooth most of the time. It’s a great place to sit and to contemplate the beauty that’s in front of you.

Once you’re done at Mirror Lake, head back to your car for the return trip. You can either continue on Wawona Road and exit through the southern entrance to the park or cut back to Southside Drive and continue back to Big Oak Flat Road, which will eventually return you to the Big Oak Flat entrance.

Take Proper Precautions

Regardless of the route you take through the park, it is important that you take the proper precautions to stay safe and to fully enjoy your trip.

First of all, stay hydrated! Even if you choose to stay in the car for most of your visit to Yosemite, realize that you will be at a higher altitude which can dehydrate you faster than normal. Of course, hydration is critical when hiking or doing other physical activities.

Unless you’re traveling on a hiking trail, stick close to the road. This will not only reduce your chances of encountering wildlife unexpectedly, but it will also ensure that you don’t run into uneven ground, ruts, or holes that may cause tripping or falls.

Finally, don’t begin a hike or a tour into an unfamiliar area as twilight hits. The last thing you want to do – especially in colder weather – is to be caught out in a remote area of the park and be completely lost, with no way to access emergency help. Know where you’re going, and go there during daylight.
