Road Trips in India – Why Road Trips in India Are The Best Way To Travel
If traveling is an adventure, a journey of discovery, then a road trip is like getting into the skin of the adventure. It is like being part of a ‘movie’, rather than watching it as a neutral observer. Road trips provide the opportunity to actually feel the pulse and emotions of the places that you are passing through. They are a great way to experience immersive travel at its best. The other advantage of a road trip is the complete freedom it offers to stop where you want and however long you want. The serendipity of travel too comes into full play during road trips as you come across places and experiences that you had never planned for. When it comes to sheer variety of experiences, then nothing can beat road trips in India.
These are enough reasons and more to ensure that road trips occupy a special place in our hearts and travel plans. This of course results in our indulgence in more and more road trips. We have done road trips in India and overseas as well and have always found them exceeding all expectations.
Road trips in India – Road Tripping Across Rajasthan
India with its diverse and changing landscapes is a mesmerizing mosaic that is tailor-made to offer exciting experiences of road tripping. Rajasthan where the hot desert winds sing the ballads of romance and chivalry, where royalty permeates the atmosphere is a haven for road trips. We have done some of our most cherished road trips in this desert state of India.
One of our best road trips in India is when we crisscrossed across the state from Jaipur to Bikaner, from Bikaner to Jaisalmer, from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, from Jodhpur to Pushkar in a seemingly unending caravan of exploration.
We have been mesmerized by surreal sunsets, intriguing local culture, local food that carried the flavor of local love and the raw earthiness of the land, and much more. We have pulled up at unknown and unnamed wayside villages to interact with the locals and discovered many an unknown treasure.
We have eaten the famous Rajasthani Ghevar and Kachoris in anonymous shops in the rural hinterland which tasted far superior to their urban avatars in the bigger cities. We really became one with the ethnic and indigenous nomadic tribes of Rajasthan as we drove around without moorings across the state.
If you are thinking that road trips are like a walk in the park or a bed of roses, think again. Road trips do have their cons. Especially if you are doing the driving, much of the pleasure of the trip evaporates for the person or persons doing the driving. The stress of driving gets to them. So if you want to sit back, relax and enjoy the whole road trip across Rajasthan, the best thing is to opt for a reliable company to rent a car in Jaipur. This will ensure an experience that you will cherish for a lifetime. The memories of the road trip across Rajasthan are sure to leave an indelible mark on your minds.
Road trips that are hassle-free remain etched in memory forever, especially when all you do is sit back and relax, without a care in the world and see the world going by.
Road trips in India – Road Tripping In Kerala
If Rajasthan is a land of desert sands and mirages which exemplifies the beauty inherent in the wilderness, then Kerala echoes the enchanting beauty of a land that seems to have been crafted with love. Kerala is a land that had drawn us again and again with its magical allure. But the best memories of Kerala to this day remain that of a road trip that we did from Kochi to Athirapally Falls and Ezhattumgam. Though the road trip was just a day trip the experience was short and incredibly sweet. We had planned beforehand and availed the services of a company that offered quality intercity car rentals. This left us absolutely free to enjoy the landscapes of God’s own country, to the brim.
The drive from Kochi to Athirapally covers a distance of about 65 kilometers but we took it slow, enjoying the scenic beauty of the land. Stopping to step out of the car to admire a grove of swaying palms, sometimes stepping out to gaze in awe at a beautiful replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta outside a church in some unknown village. We stopped to eat some exotic fruit and drink tender coconut milk, we were spellbound by the antics of a local who poured tea for us as he magically juggled with a glass and jug flinging the liquid and catching it perfectly without spilling a drop.
In short, we reveled in the pleasures of serendipity that the road trip afforded to us and returned back with memories to last a lifetime. If you are wondering why this post does not speak about the destinations, it is because the journeys itself were so magical they seemed to have stolen the thunder from the destinations.
Road trips in India – Road Tripping In Arunachal Pradesh
Road tripping assumes a magical aura when you are in the north-east. Every bend in the road seems to be pregnant with the promise of something exciting, something unusual. We were not at all disappointed when embarked on a road trip that took us all the way from Dibrugarh in Assam to the heart of Arunachal Pradesh and back.
Our heart skipped a beat as we drove from Dibrugarh towards the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra. We watched with schoolboyish glee as our car drove straight into a ramshackle boat over precarious wooden slabs. We cruised the Brahmaputra river as the setting sun painted its colorful image on the swirling waters of the river. The car drove off the boat once we reached the banks and we resumed our road hugging journey.
The road trip was a veritable show of nature at its best. We slid our hands out of the window to feel the spray of countless waterfalls cascading merrily on the way. We made unscheduled stops to have bowls of steaming hot Maggi noodles.
We hobnobbed with kids at wayside pit stops apart from being hypnotized by the pristine beauty of the land. We wandered into the forest to pick exotic and wild berries and cringed at the strange flavors that hit us when we bit into them. We frolicked in the rain and huddled inside the car when the mercury sank. We wished we would never reach our destination and wanted the journey to continue endlessly.
These are glimpses of some of the road trips that we have done in India. All of them had one thing in common. We did not want any one of them to end. We were so happy with the journey that we did not care about the destination.
Don’t you think that life too is like a road trip? Enjoy the journey and do not bother about the destination, you are sure to get there one day!

Road trips are so much fun. But with the fun, we have to also think about safety. Hence I always prefer chauffeur driven road trips 😊
Chauffeur driven trips are indeed the best and most relaxing way to enjoy road travel! Each trip you have mentioned here seems fabulous, but so far I have only done Rajasthan.
Oh yes!I love road trips although I don’t like to drive. I enjoy the ones that are chauffeur driven so that I can sit back and enjoy the scenery on the way!
Loved your article, my mom’s place is in Bikaner and I travelled many times to n fro to Jaipur via roads and enjoyed every bit of it. But yes one who is driving never enjoy the trip. Renting a car is a great idea.. will surely try this out during next trip planned.
I love road trips and have been to Rajasthan on road trip, Kerala and Konkan are very much on the cards for another road trip .
I love road trips as you get a feel of the land, you can stop anywhere , interact with locals, have local food and it is great way to connect with your fellow passengers.
I loved reading this article. I agree. Road trips in India are great. Just like you even I had one of my best road trip experiences in Rajasthan and Arunachal Pradesh. I am planning more road trips in North East India. Very well written article.
And personally I too prefer chauffeur driven car. That ways I can enjoy the views without distraction and also save my energy.
We’ve never been into road trips before because my husband hates driving especially when there is traffic. LOL.. But great that you have mentioned about renting cars and having someone to drive it for you. 🙂
Road tripping in India sounds a lot of fun and pretty exciting too. The way you described it seems incredible with lots of lovely landscapes too see and many locals to meet.
I would be terrified driving onto that ferry boat! Haha! But that’s the point of adventure, I guess. To get out there and explore and take risks. You’ve seen a lot of awesome stuff along your road trips, for sure!
Great Post, Frankly I have never loved long road trips but now with a toddler, it seems just perfect. I can carry my word in my car . it gives so much ease in travelling.
today trips are actually the best way to travel, small hault… and travelling with friends makes it more memorable
Road trips are so much fun. I have very good memories from many road trips. Going with different set of people on same/different trips has its own benefits and gives all new experiences and memories too.
I agree road trips are very charming experiences as you get to smell the food and imbibe varied cultures. I love ur narration, it is lucid and connectable. The pictures are great too.
IMHO, the best and the cheapest way to travel in India is via railways. I would love to go on a road trip in North east India especially Arunachal Pradesh, all the way to china border.
Road trips are the best way to explore around! We build a treasure of memories on Roadtrips and its beautiful!
I absolutely LOVED your article.
Such a great article! Road trips are double the fun with chauffeur driven cars. We have been on road trips and every experience was worth the travel. Can’t wait to explore our next road trip to these places you have talked about.
I really love road trips. I enjoy watching those green farms near roads and many small village and there culturals.
I have never enjoyed road trips in India. I have always stuck in traffic jams owing to always some construction happening on the road. Just sitting on the car and not able to stretch my body really tires me out. I always prefer train journey over road journey.
Being a traveller myself I love to go on road trips often and trust me having a chauffeur driven road trip is so much more comfy than self-driven.
I’ve never been to India. Your photos inspire me to want to travel there. I love your road trip suggestions.
It’s so much easier to travel around the place with a chauffeur, not everyone can drive for such a long time.
I couldn’t agree more, the best way to travel and experience India is via road trips. We’ve done the Himalayan mountain line and Rann Utsav via the road and it has been one of the most enriching experiences.
I love a good road trip. You can discover so many unexpected things along the way. I’ve never had the chance to do one in India, but I have fond memories of the ones we did across the US as a kid.
I haven’t been much of a road tripper but I’m sure it’s adventurous as hell. Would love to find someone who loves driving as much as I do to be able to go
Road journeys are so much fun but when it comes to driving for long hours it becomes taxing. To be able to enjoy better I would prefer a chauffeur driven vehicle.
The beauty of a place can be assessed only by traveling by road. I mean changing cultures and terrains….road trips are simply the best!
India is a beautiful country and the joy of road trips is that not only does it give an opportunity to soak in natural splendour but also provides leeway to interact with people and halt at those tea stalls and eating joints that are atypical to a place. Loved your post. It raked up a plethora of memories of my road trips.
You make a great case for road tripping in India as way to truly have the local experience. Loved the sunset and waterfall photos and your description of the local who poured tea through the air. Those are the things you never forget.
When we can we always like to do road trips and love the freedom you get from having your own transport. We’ve done them on bikes and in cars in Australia, NZ, Turkey, Switzerland and Vietnam so India would be awesome!
I absolutely love roadtrips!! I live in the US and have done numerous roadtrips there, but I’ve also driven through several European countries. I agree, it’s definitely the best way to see things! I’d love to do it in India one day
I agree that road trips really fill in the gaps that a plane ride just can’t. The landscapes you show here are incredible, and I’m sure you get so much exposure to different cultures and cuisines as you drive and stop along the way.
India is a really awesome country for a travel and I like very much for traveling. Road trips in India are easy for travel is the right information you shared on this blog. It’s very helpful for road trips in India. Thanks for sharing.
