Day Trips from Perth Australia – Top Things To Do In Perth
Once you’ve explored Perth city and the surrounding suburbs, you might be wanting to venture further afield, to see the Western Australia magic that so many talk about. Because, although Western Australia is one of the most isolated places on the earth, it’s also arguably one of the most stunning – and the fact that many places are barely visited by tourists give it an untouched, raw beauty.
If you’re backpacking Australia, you might be heading up to the west coast on a road trip to Broome or Darwin; however, all of these places can be visited on a day trip from Perth. Choose to either rent a car to visit these destinations, or participate in organized tours; many of which leave Perth every day. Discover the best things to do in Perth Australia here:
The Best Day Trips From Perth Australia
Margaret River
Beautiful Margaret River is only three hours from Perth and is one of the fantastic day trips from Perth. Although many Perthites head to the area for their holidays, there’s plenty that can be seen in just a day in Margaret River.
If it’s sunny in Margaret River, head straight to the beach: Yallingup Beach is great for surfing, while Hamelin Bay has excellent snorkelling – with lots of marine life to see despite its southern location, including stingrays – and if you have time, scuba diving can also be enjoyed from here! Visit Smiths Beach for turquoise waters and white sands and Indijup Beach for dolphin spotting.

Head inland to enjoy some of Australia’s best wineries; Margaret River is home to a huge array of vineyards selling local wines. Purchase a souvenir from the area, or spend an afternoon sampling all sorts of different beverages! In the same area, there are cheese and chocolate factories, where local products can also be sampled and purchased.
If you’re after a good meal, head to Busselton, which is home to the Southern Hemisphere’s longest jetty and lots of bars and restaurants. For a great sunset spot, walk to Cape Naturaliste lighthouse where you can enjoy the sun descending over the Indian Ocean, turning the sky beautiful pinks and oranges as it does so.
Perth Hills
Just eastwards of Perth’s CBD lie the beautiful Perth Hills. Second, only to Margaret River for vineyards in Western Australia, the area around the Perth Hills is a fantastic spot for wine tasting.
If wine isn’t your thing, there are also some beautiful orchards with locally grown cider to sample. If you’re not a drinker or are travelling with kids, visit Mundaring Weir to learn about the area’s history and see kangaroos (it’s the closest place to urban Perth where you can see kangaroos in their natural habitat!), or admire the architecture of the historic town of Guildford.
Lancelin
Lancelin’s not one of the most popular day trips from Perth, but it’s well worth visiting, mainly for its incredible white sand dunes. They’re a spectacle to behold; if you have a four-wheel-drive car it is possible to drive right up to them, and you can get out and climb up to the top of the dunes.
Seeing the beach and the town from the top of the dunes is a wonderful sight; and for a cheap price, it is possible to rent a sandboard and soar down the dune. Sandboards can be rented from the local gas station, or there is normally a trailer hiring them outright by the dunes.
Yanchep National Park
Most people visit Yanchep National Park because it is the only place where you can see koalas in Western Australia outside of zoos. The Aussie animal is not native to this side of the continent but was introduced to the national park and stay there because of the abundance of eucalyptus.
Head to Yanchep National Park to see some koalas, take advantage of the many walking trails and birdwatching opportunities, or have a picnic by its scenic lake. It’s a great spot to enjoy nature not too far from the city, and is one of the best day trips from Perth, especially for families.

Fremantle
Technically a suburb of Perth – although definitely a town in its own right – Fremantle is possibly the hippest town in Western Australia. If you’re backpacking in Australia, you’ll find it a popular hangout – many young travellers who are working in Perth opt to live in funky Fremantle instead. Popular attractions within Fremantle include the prison tours where you can see how the cells evolved over the ages, the historic roundhouse, the Fremantle markets which are held every weekend and the many bars, cafes and restaurants dotted all over town.

Rottnest Island
Famed for its crystal clear blue waters, excellent snorkeling, and of course, its resident quokkas – Rottnest Island is an experience not to be missed when you’re staying in Perth. You can take an easy day trip from Perth by taking a ferry over to the island, and while you’re there, you can enjoy cycling, hiking and beach time, while taking in the spectacular vistas of the island – and of course, taking photos of the impossibly blue water!
Other great experiences on the island include the just 4 fun aqua park which is perfect for kids, surf lessons, walking to the lighthouse for spectacular views, Segway tours or – if you want something really unique – seaplane tours of the island. Rottnest island should definitely figure in your day trips from Perth list.

The Pinnacles
Located just under 200 kilometers from Perth, The Pinnacles are tucked within Nambung National Park. They’re an interesting geological form – rocks protruding from the sandy desert below – and nobody’s all that sure how they got there.
You can drive a circuit around The Pinnacles, or take a walking trail through them; the otherworldly desert atmosphere makes for some great photos. If you stick around for sunset, you’ll be graced with a breathtaking view over The Pinnacles, the desert and the beach and the ocean.

Hangover Bay
If you’re searching for a quiet beach, look further than Cottesloe in Perth; a two-hour drive up the coast will take you to the wonderfully deserted Hangover Bay. While many travellers visit just for the novelty of the name, it’s a stunning beach where you can easily find a private spot.
Head to Hangover Bay for four-wheel driving, snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing and beach walks. It’s a popular spot to see dolphins and sea lions. And be sure to stick around for sundown… Western Australia sunsets are among the best in the world; made even better by the fact that you’re likely to have a beach to yourself!

Useful post.
General perception is that Perth doesn’t have much to see- everyone goes to Melbourne, Sydney, Gold coast… This post throws some light on possible trips fro Perth
Wow Australia is on my wish list since long. Beautiful place beautifully captured in your post.
I think it is the best destination for enjoying vacations in Australia. You’ve highlighted a lot of great tips!
Looks like Perth is a great place to halt for some days and go on day trips to these places. Thanks for the recommendations on hotels too.
Perth is probably one of the most underrated destinations in Australia. There is so much to see in this beautiful city, whether it’s the beaches or the mountains or the monuments. I loved the pics of Rottnest Island, the place looks gorgeous!
There is so much of natural beauty here. And each place is a photographer’s delight. Having just got back from Australia, definitely recommend the wildlife sanctuary for the unusual wildlife and that island – I can only think of Scuba diving there. Sigh! Next time
I want to visit Yanchep National Park but I find it weird they introduced Kolas there. I feel like that is a bad thing to do to a national park. Has there been any negative effects on the ecosystem.
I found the information extensive and very helpful. Keep up the great work!
