Kudroli Temple Mangalore | Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple | Gokarnanatheshwara Temple – Origin & History
The Kudroli Gokarnath Temple, Mangalore, was built in the year 1912. However, the temple as seen today came into existence in 1991, when it was renovated and expanded. Since the year 1989, the temple has played a pivotal role in the celebration of the Dasara festival in Mangalore in a grand manner.
The Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple was originally built for Shiva in keeping with the Nath tradition that was prevalent in the region. Nath traditions were practised by a sub-sect within Hinduism, the tradition combined the tenets of Buddhism, Shaivism, and Hatha Yoga. The Nath tradition was founded by Matsyendranath.
Legend has it that he along with a disciple named Mangaladevi arrived in the region now known as Mangalore. Mangaladevi was a princess named Premaladevi who had embraced the Nath tradition. It is believed that owing to illness she settled in the region of Bolar where she passed away. A temple was built in her memory at Bolar known as Mangaladevi temple, and the city that we now know as Mangalore gets its name from Mangaladevi.

More than a hundred years ago, casteism enveloped the country and most of the temples had restrictions of entry into their premises. The Billavas, an ethnic community found in Coastal Karnataka were also excluded from entering and worshipping at the temples.
The Billavas yearned for a temple where they could worship God freely and give vent to their spiritual aspirations. In such a scenario, a man named, Adhyaksha Koragappa who was a leader of the Billava community and a businessman, envisaged the building of a temple to serve the needs of not only the Billava community but people of all castes.
In those days Shri Narayana Guru was making waves in neighbouring Kerala and other parts of South India as a philosopher, spiritual teacher, and social reformer. He propagated social equality and fought for reforms in the society infected with the malaise of casteism. Adhyaksha Koragappa approached Shri Narayan Guru for guidance in setting up a temple for Shiva and asked him to choose an appropriate location.

Thus with the blessings and spiritual guidance of Shri Narayana Guru, and the drive and initiative of Adhyaksha Koragappa, the Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple took shape in 1912. The original temple was built in a typical Kerala temple architectural style. The sacred Shiva Linga was brought by Shri Narayana Guru who himself consecrated it in the new temple.

Following the advice of Shri Narayana Guru, idols of other deities like Ganapathy, Subrahmanya, Annapoorneshwari, Krishna, Navagrahas, Shanishwara, etc., were also installed in the Kudroli Shree Gokarnanatha Kshetra.

The old Sri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple of Kudroli was renovated in 1991, through the efforts of Shri. H.Somasunder, the son of Adhyaksha Koragappa, and Shri B. Janardhana Poojary. Shri Janardhan Poojary, himself from the Billava community, is a patron of the Kudroli Gokarnatheshwara temple. The renovated temple was inaugurated by former Prime Minister of India Rajeev Gandhi, in 1991. A stone plaque commemorates this event at the main entrance to the temple.
The current temple campus of Kudroli Gokarnatheshwara temple follows the Chola style of architecture as opposed to the typical Kerala style of architecture that the original temple had. The renovated Kudroli Temple Mangalore’s structure was designed by an architect named Sthapadi K. Dakshinamoorthy.

As you enter the main gate of Kudroli Gokarnath Temple, a wide-open- courtyard leads towards the main Gopuram.
The outer courtyard of Gokarnanatheshwara Temple has beautiful temples dedicated to Hanuman ( Bhagwan Hanuman Mandir ).
There is also a Shirdi Sai Baba Temple ( Shirdi Sai Baba Mandir ), Lord Krishna Temple, etc…
A massive Nandi stands vigil facing the main entrance to the temple.
A beautiful black statue of Lord Shiva with his consort Parvati and children Ganesha and Ayyappa can be seen behind the Nandi statue.
There is a beautiful marble statue of Shri Narayana Guru near the entrance to the temple.
A magnificent sculpture of Krishna in a chariot catches your attention outside the Krishna temple. Elsewhere a giant Kalasha lends a surreal aura to the temple.
The gopuram that leads to the temple’s sanctum sanctorum is embellished with beautiful sculptures of different Hindu Gods and Goddesses and other celestial beings. The inner courtyard leads to the main temple which still retains its ancient architectural design. There are temples to Ganesha, Subrahmanya, and other deities inside the inner courtyard.

The Kudroli temple Mangalore is known for the various festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner. These festivals include Maha Shivratri, Shree Ramnavami, Ugadi, Shree Krishna Janmashtami, etc. But the temple is famous for its Navaratri festival and Dasara celebrations famously known as Mangalore Dasara.
During the 10 day Mangalore Dasara celebrations, the city is decorated with vibrant and colourful lights. During Navratri, the Swarna Kalamantapa within the Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Kshetra comes alive with festivities. Goddess Sharada idol, along with idols of Mahaganapathi and the Navadurgas are installed. The Navadurgas idols are those of Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmandaini, Skandamata, Katyayini, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri.
People queue up in thousands during Navaratri for a glimpse of the beautiful Navadurga idols at the Kudroli temple. The idols of Sharda Devi referred to as Kudroli Sharda Devi or Mangalore Sharda Devi, Mahaganapathi, and the Navadurgas are worshipped for 9 days.
On the 10th day, the famous Kudroli Temple Procession takes place. The highlight of the procession are the Tiger dance, Lion dance, and Bear dance. The procession also features colourful traditional dances like Yakshagana, Hulivesha, Dollu Kunitha, etc. Colourful tableaux are also part of the procession. The procession starts from the Kudroli Gokarnanatheswara temple on the evening of Vijayadashmi and moves through the city and returns to the temple in the early hours of the morning on the next day.
The idols of Sharada Devi, Mahaganapathi, and the Navadurgas are then immersed in the waters of the Pushkarini located within the Shree Gokarnanathewshwara Kshetra.

Wow I have never been to these Kudroli temples. I have been to Mangalore couple of times, mainly to see the coastal beaches but have never explored the temples. I love visiting temples because of the architecture and the history they have. Maybe next time I am in Managalore, I should make sure I visit the temple.
