Annual Convention of ATOAI in Araku
The thrill of adventure is infectious and today travelers are looking more and more for experiences that offer the opportunity of adventure. But what is really important is that in the mad rush to cater to this demand for adventure tourism, the aspects of safety and sustainability are not sacrificed. The ATOAI – Adventure Tour Operators Association Of India is an association that is working on the promotion of adventure tourism along with a sharp focus on sustainability and safety in India.
The annual convention of the ATOAI is held at different destinations to promote these destinations as well as develop sustainable tourism in the area. The annual convention of ATOAI is also a forum for the exchange of best practices amongst the members of ATOAI. The annual event is also a platform to voice issues and address common challenges of the Adventure tourism industry.
What Does ATOAI Do
We spoke to Capt. Swadesh Kumar, President of ATOAI on the sidelines of the 14th Annual Convention of ATOAI in Araku, Andhra Pradesh. He explained the rationale and the vision of ATOAI. The ATOAI has been in existence for over two decades and 2019 happens to be its silver jubilee year.
Capt. Swadesh Kumar explained that when the association was formed about 25 years ago, the primary focus was to collaborate and liaison with Government agencies collectively. However, the vision has changed over the years and today embraces the promotion of new destinations like Araku Valley, in Andhra Pradesh and many others across the country where the ATOAI annual conventions are held.
The other point of focus is nurturing a culture of professionalism in the industry by ensuring safety standards and protection of the environment as well as the use of local resources. It aims to set benchmarks of safety and professional code of conduct amongst its members. The association is also working towards getting more and more women and youth involved in the adventure tourism sector.
Prelude To The 14th Annual Convention ATOAI in Araku
We were privileged to be invited to attend the annual ATOAI convention at the pristine Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh. We were part of the media team covering the event. But before heading to Araku Valley which is located about 114 kilometers from Vishakapatnam, we were treated to some splendid sights of the clean and green Vishakapatnam city.
We stayed overnight in the beautiful locale of the Haritha Beach Resort in Rushikonda, Vishakapatnam. Our room offered panoramic views of the Rushikonda beach stretching below.
We also visited two unique museums in India. The INS Kurusura Submarine Museum that is located right inside a decommissioned submarine.
The other museum was the TU 142 Aircraft Museum that is housed inside a decommissioned TU-142M aircraft of the Indian Navy.
After spending a day at Vishakapatnam we drove over to the pristine locations of Araku Valley, high up in the hills of the Eastern Ghats to attend the 14th ATOAI Annual Convention.

Adventure At ATOAI In Araku Annual Convention
As befitting the ATOAI In Araku Annual Convention, there were many adventure activities organized for the delegates that included cycling, zorbing, ziplining, ballooning, paramotoring, among others. We loved taking to the skies in a paramotor and the exhilaration of flying like a bird still remains fresh in memory.
The 14th ATOAI Annual Convention in Araku Valley was a wonderful event that had the tour operators of the country coming together to share best practices and chart the course for the future with a focus on ensuring the best in the class safety standards in adventure tourism in India.

It’s great to see India has such conferences and you have managed to attend one. Something on adventure is really thrilling! I haven’t been to Vishakapatnam yet and I would surely keep in mind about the museums.
I Had no idea about this event thanks for the insight! I am impressed they didn’t have plastic bottles, THIS is the change we want to see from organizations and companies! Also the aircraft museum seems very interesting! Looks that you had a great time overall!
I really love the Araku valley band I visited twice there… Very nice place, natural beauty… It’s sound good a great conference held there
It’s good that they endorse the use of refillable water bottles during the convention. How cool that you could enjoy the beauty of the area from a paramotor. First time I heard about it. Normally it’s paragliding.
Interesting post about the ATOAI Convention in Araku. It sounds like the Indian Adventure Tourism Assn is engaged in some progressive activities and I especially like that they gave all delegates a refillable water bottle for use at the conference and for touring your great country.
I had never heard of this event thank you for highlighting its purpose. Some of the activities of the presenters, I am still trying to get my head around. I had not heard of the Race Across America either. I really admire people who push themselves and achieve so much.
Good to know such events are being promoted in a big way. I have met Mr. Swadesh Kumar once. He is a great person.
Attending the ATOAI In Araku seems like an interesting experience. I never heard of this event before and I really appreciate that you highlighted its purpose. It’s great to know such events are being promoted in a big way.
This is a nice convention learning about the new trends in travel. We travels are the ambassadors and we should be spreading the care for our environment. Kudos for making this even possible.
Sounds an important convention, keeping in mind the growth of adventure tourism in India. Good to know that they are promoting women and youth along with safe adventure.
It seems like a great convention.. It is really appreciable that they are promoting women and youth adventure . It’s a great step towards growth..
Vow such amazing conference, am so glad that you were a part of it. Very motivating to see women discussing in the panel. And such amazing adventurous activities. Hope you had a bash
I never read about this event on any travel blog. India has lots to offer and such conferences can help people explore the hidden gems of tourism. The museum sounds great. You have done an amazing job in covering the event
Glad that you were part of the media team to cover this event at Arukku. It indeed is a beautiful place with rolling mountains and a perfect place for adventure activities. I keep visiting Vizag as my relatives live there and I see that an Air museum has been inaugurated. All the more reason to visit Vizag again!
Oh, wow! Loved this post. You surely seem to have had a great time attending the ATOAI convention. 🙂
Also, love the look of both the museums you visited. Will surely keep them in mind, and try to visit whenever we are in the vicinity next.
It’s good to see such initiatives. The adventure sports adds the thrill while the responsible tourism leaves the place as is for the rest to enjoy. Araku Valley is quite offbeat. This should help boost tourism in a responsible manner
The stories around conservation and sustainable tourism shared in this meet must have been very exciting. Do you plan to share some of them in your future posts? It’s good to know there is such a society which is doing a very great job in the direction of sustainable tourism.
It is good to see that adventure tourism is being taken seriously in India. Adventure tourism is quite unregulated in India and in many case harms the environment and ecosystem. Conventions like this can make the adventure tour operators more responsible.
Wow, those two museums seem really interesting! I’ve never seen something like those before 🙂 And this annual convention is such a good initiative. Good job to them!
