Things To Do In Sardinia

Sardinia is one of the most popular vacation spots in Europe. And it is easy to understand why; this Italian island boasts exquisite beaches, crystal clear sea, and wonderful nature. It has something to offer to everyone, whether you just want to spend the day tanning or get an adrenaline rush.

7 Things To Do In Sardinia

This is why it can be hard to decide which spots are worth seeing, especially if you’re visiting Sardinia for the first time.

Things To Do In Sardinia

So, we’re here to help. From exploring underwater caves to hiking the highest peaks on the island – here are the best things to do in Sardinia!

7 Fun Things To Do In Sardinia

1. Gennargentu National Park

This national park is a great spot for everyone because there are so many different things you can do here? Want to go hiking? Not a problem! Fancy a day of lounging on the beach? Just go for it? In the mood to explore some canyons? Let’s go!

Gennargentu National Park is on the east coast of Sardinia, and it boasts pristine nature. It is home to Sardinia’s highest mountain peak, Punta La Marmora, which offers picturesque views of the entire island. Hikers and climbers can have heaps of fun here, but so can those looking for a sedentary vacation.

With a myriad of calas (coves) within the national park, dipping your toes in the azure blue water is a must. Cala Goloritzé and Cala Sisina are particularly breathtaking, but they tend to be crowded with tourists.

For privacy, you will want to head to a more secluded cove, like Cala dei Gabbiani or Cala Mudaloru. It’s recommended that you rent a boat since that’s the only way to reach most of the secluded coves.

2. Neptune’s Grotto And Capo Caccia

Neptune’s Grotto And Capo Caccia

Western Sardinia is home to some astonishing natural sites. Capo Caccia is one of those – the rocky promontory offers endless horizon views and is easily one of the most beautiful sights on the entire island.

This area is also popular with divers since it boasts a vast underwater cave. Nereo Cave lies just under the limestone cliffs of Capo Caccia, and it is thought to be the largest marine cave in the Mediterranean Sea.

But neither of these spots is what initially attracts people to the area. That would be the Neptune’s Grotto, a stalactite cave of unprecedented beauty. The entrance to the cave is only one meter above sea level, so it’s only possible to visit when the tide is low.

To get to the entrance, you will have to climb down Escala del Cabrion – iconic stairway that was cut into the cliffside, and which offers scenic views of the Mediterranean Sea. The stairway features 654 steps, which can be challenging even for people in excellent physical condition. I guess that’s why they’re called Goat’s Steps!

3. Tomba Dei Giganti

How often do you have the opportunity to explore Megalithic tombs? Giant’s tomb is what the locals call the megalithic gallery grave in northern Sardinia. The archaeological site is only minutes away from Santa Teresa Gallura, a small town on the island’s northern tip, and it is the best thing to do in that area.

The name stems from old folk tales. In the past, it was considered that the masonry with large stone blocks was a result of legendary giants roaming the area. In reality, the large stone blocks are actually a collective grave of a nearby village.

You can visit the archeological site on your own; it’s easy to reach from Santa Teresa Gallura, and the tickets are inexpensive. You can also opt for a guided tour if you want to learn more about the site and its importance.

4. Lie On The Beach

Lie On The Beach

One of the best things to do in Sardinia is just lounge on the beach. The island is swarming with enchanting coves, which feature azure sea and white sand. And nature so beautiful should be admired properly, so it’s more than reasonable to spend a day doing absolutely nothing other than staring at the vast expanse of sea in front of you.

What I love about Sardinia’s beaches is that there’s something for everyone. From public beaches that get overly crowded, to secluded coves you can only reach by boat – whether you want company or privacy, there’s a perfect spot for you.

An honorary mention goes to Cala Gonone, just north of the Gennargentu National Park. The town features some of the most gorgeous beaches on the entire island, with crystal clear water and soft white sand. With picturesque views all around you, a day in Cala Gonone will be a day well spent.

And I also have to mention La Pelosa beach in Stintino. The color of the sea and sand are reminiscent of the beach in the Caribbean, which is why this is often dubbed Sardinia’s most beautiful beach. It’s an excellent spot for snorkeling and water sports, as long as you visit it in the offseason. The beauty of La Pelosa is not a well-kept secret, and it does tend to get very crowded during peak season.

5. Go Hiking

Go Hiking

The great thing about Sardinia is the versatility of its offer. Sure, the island is best known for its wonderful beaches, but it’s also a great spot for hikers and climbers. The Supramonte mountain range, in particular, is full of adventures and trails that are just waiting for you to hike them.

I have to mention the Great Trail of Supramonte – a four days hike that takes you across the mountains in the heart of the island. It’s about 50 kilometers long, and you get to spend each night in a different mountain refuge.

True adventurers will love this; you get to see so much of the island’s wild side, and it’s definitely a thrilling experience. And the great thing about this trail is that it is beginner-friendly; although it’s really long and physically demanding, the actual trails are simple enough that you don’t need any previous hiking experience.

Other than this mammoth of a hiking trail, there are loads of shorters hikes you can do on the island. In fact, a lot of them will reward you with a secluded cove at the end of the trail, where you can just relax, sit back and enjoy the views. Or just jump into the sea and cool down after an exhausting walk.

6. Visit Cagliari

Visit Cagliari

A trip to the island’s capital is one of the things you absolutely have to do in Sardinia. Cagliari is a gorgeous city, with many attractions worth visiting. Even if you’re staying in the area, you can make a day trip to the capital of Sardinia and it will be completely worth it!

One of the most popular tourist spots in the city is Bastione Saint Remy. The iconic landmark is famous for its limestone arch and pillars, with a vast promenade that hosts all sorts of cultural events. You will have to climb a lot of stairs to get to the top, so wear appropriate shoes. And don’t worry – the views from the top will help you forget about the grueling cardio you just went through.

Cagliari is also home to Sardinia’s National Archaeological Museum, which houses exhibits on the island’s ancient history. History buffs, in particular, will love this attraction, as it gives them an opportunity to witness many ancient artifacts.

You should also visit Parco di Monte Urpinu. It’s a hilltop public park that offers scenic views of the city and the Molentargius Pond. This is actually one of the best things you can do if you are traveling with kids because there’s a playground in the park, as well as many different rides. They can stay entertained for hours, and you can sit back and just enjoy the views.

And let’s not forget about Cagliari Cathedral, a 13th century Roman Catholic church with royal tombs. There are loads of other spots in the city worth seeing, which is exactly why spending (at least) a day in Cagliari is one of the best things to do in Sardinia.

7. Nuraghe Palmavera

Nuraghe Palmavera

I’m obsessed with ancient sites and luckily for me, Sardinia is full of them. There’s just something about looking at a rock that’s thousands of years old that makes you question everything about your life. And the remains of a Bronze Age settlement known as nuraghe Palmavera will do exactly that.

The nuraghe is an ancient edifice that was developed during the Nuragic age, and which stands as a symbol of the Nuragic civilization. It has a very characteristic three-component structure, which comprises of three layers. The outer layer features stones that are tilted inwards and that get smaller with height; then there’s the inner layer, which is entirely made from smaller stones, and the intermediate layer of very small pieces and dirt, which actually holds the entire structure together.

There are thousands of nuraghe throughout the island. Lots of them, including the nuraghe Palmavera, are considered UNESCO World Heritage Sights, due to their archeological importance. And it is incredibly fun to explore them. Just watch your head, since the entrances into the towers are not very tall.

  1. Wow, Sardinia looks so beautiful! I love beach vacations, but especially places where there are plenty of opportunities to do things other than lay on the beach the whole time. I would love to explore all the caves and grottos!

  2. Sardinia has been on our bucket list- but our Italy bucket list is so long we’ll need to visit for two months to fit it all in! Everything in this post looks incredible!

  3. This rock looks so unique, I’d like to see it for real! You reminded me about the Lion Rock I visited in Sri Lanka this winter, it’s a UNESCO world site too. Caves from number #2 look so cool too, thanks for sharing!

  4. Sardinia looks really beautiful! We hesitated between Sardinia and Sicily many years ago, and ended up going to Sicily. When it’s safe enough to fly again, we’ll certainly try to spend a week in Sardinia! Thanks for sharing!

  5. Wow, Sardinia actually has so much more to offer than I expected, thanks for the inspiration! And lovely photos too, I’d especially like to visit the grotto (I’m clearly not a beach person ha ha!)

  6. I had no idea there was so much to do in Sardinia! It looks such a beautiful place too. I love to visit beautiful beaches, but definitely need more than just that when I visit a destination so Sardinia looks perfect! The 4 day hike sounds especially appealing to get off the beaten track and stay at different places along the way 🙂

  7. You’re right there really is something for everyone! I love the idea of being able to explore all the different coves and beaches I bet you could spend a couple of days just doing that!

  8. I honestly had no idea Sardinia was so picturesque! Italy is so close to us from Switzerland and yet we have shortchanged the place so much it’s woeful! Think Sardinia will be my first place to visit on my Italy list – would love to explore the Gennargentu National Park and those cave structures at Capo Caccia.

  9. Okay, so I already wanted to visit Sardinia to see those gorgeous coastal views and eat all the tasty food…but I had never really considered it a hiking destination as well! Now you have me totally convinced. I’d love to explore Gennargentu National Park as well as some of the Great Trail of Supramonte! (you had me as son as you mentioned mountains. 😉 )

  10. Sardinia looks gorgeous! What a hidden gem. I love beaches and have been to several locations in Italy but have never been to this area. I’m definitely putting this on our bucket list for places to visit. Great post and thanks for sharing!

  11. I really want to visit Sardinia! It looks absolutely beautiful and I love how there are so many great adventure spots to check out. 🙂
