Babul went up to see the cow, and was amazed to see Kapila pouring her milk on a particular spot. Babul observed this strange phenomenon for a few more days and then informed Pandurang about it.
The place where Kapila splattered her milk was dug up, only to discover a Shiva Linga, and idols of Parvati, Hanuman and Ganesh. In course of time a temple was built at this place to Lord Shiva, and the Shiva Linga and other idols consecrated. The temple came to be known as Babulnath Temple, in honour of Babul, the cowherd.
The fact that the slopes of the hill were covered with Babul (Vacchelia Nilotica) trees, may have also contributed to the etymology of the Shiva temple.
In the early 19th century a dispute over the Mandir Land ensued with the then Mumbai Parsi Panchayat, which was ultimately settled with the help of the then Maharajah of Baroda, Shri Malharrao Gaikwad, and subsequently the Mandir went through a major expansion with the patronage of the well to do Gujarati and Bania communities.
