Chandigarh Points Of Interest – How to Spend One Day in Chandigarh
Chandigarh was one of the earliest planned cities of independent India, the blueprint of which was drawn up by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier. A visit to Chandigarh popularly referred to as City Beautiful is a wonderful experience. It is counted among the cleanest cities in the country and also ranks very high on the happiness index. If you are in this modern, highly urban city for a day here are some of the sights and sounds you must experience. We share with you top Chandigarh points of interest and landmarks.
Chandigarh points of interest – How to spend the Morning
There are many places to visit in Chandigarh, one can start ones day with a leisurely stroll through one of the beautiful parks in this green city. The Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is one of the most popular among these. The garden hosts an international rose festival and showcases hundreds of indigenous and imported roses carefully cultivated for their vivid colors and scintillating fragrances.
For an authentic Punjab-Haryana experience, indulge in a hearty breakfast at one of the city’s best-known dhabas such as the Pal Dhaba (Sector 28). Before the overhead sun starts to blaze, head straight to Nek Chand’s Rock Garden. The garden is one of the most famous places in Chandigarh.
The sprawling maze-like garden is made completely of waste material that was discarded in demolition sites across the city. The innovating use of the waste along with the beauty of the waterfalls and the fort-like structure will keep you enthralled for a couple of hours. The Nek Chand Rock Garden is indeed one of the best places to see in Chandigarh.
Chandigarh points of interest – How to spend the Noon
Noon is the perfect time to get away from the sun and take refuge in one of the many museums in the city. A visit to the museums is one of the best things to do in Chandigarh. The Government Museum and Art Gallery and the International Dolls Museum are among the top attractions of the city and register a footfall of thousands each year. If you’re staying in one of the well-connected hotels in Sector 34 Chandigarh, you will find numerous cafes and fast food joints in the nearby Sector 35 market.
Post lunch you may want to visit the Chandigarh Capitol Complex, the government offices compound, designed by Le Corbusier himself. This is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the best places in Chandigarh. While you’re here, do drop in on the Open Hand Monument which is now a symbol of Chandigarh government and one of the tourist spots in Chandigarh.
Chandigarh points of interest – How to spend the Evening
Reserve your evening for a boat ride on the famous Sukhna Lake which is one of the most popular tourist places in Chandigarh. You may also take a leisurely stroll along the jogging track that is built near the lake. Sunset at the lake, with the Shivaliks in the backdrop, is likely to be one of the most breathtaking views you’ll come across at one of the most beautiful places in Chandigarh.
Late evening is shopping time at the Sector 17 market complex. One of the best places in Chandigarh for shopping. Do visit even if you do not plan to buy anything. The laser show at the market is one that is keenly awaited by all visitors. Alternatively, you may want to shop at the Elante mall – one of the biggest malls in India.
Late evening, dine at Baluchi (the LaLiT Chandigarh), Black Lotus (Taj Vivanta), or the Virgin Courtyard. These are counted among the most romantic restaurants in Chandigarh.
No matter what your preference in cuisine or what your budget is, Chandigarh has something for everyone. Your day in Chandigarh cannot end without sampling the vibrant nightlife here. Head out to some of the fabulous discos and nightclubs that pepper the heart of the city. Chandigarh is one of the safest cities in the country and has a very efficient law enforcement department. Chandigarh is a beautifully planned city. The rose garden was my favorite place when we visited Chandigarh from Patiala where we lived for a couple of years. I am sure more hangout places would have come up now for youngsters.
A UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and Le Corbusier are a winning formula for putting Chandigarh on my India bucket list.
Btw, I would love to dine at the Black Lotus. Somehow just that name – the Black Lotus – sounds mystical and romantic.
I have heard lot about Chandigarh as it is very green and one of the cleanest in India. Would love to visit Rose Garden and Nek Chand Ronak garden. Also musical fountains are worth watching.
What a cool city! We plan to visit India next year, so we’ll definitely put Chandigarh on our list. That musical fountain looks so interesting!
Chandigarh invokes nostalgia of childhood when we visited it as a day picnic and my most favourite place was the rock garden! Such creativity by Mr. Nek chand. Loved the exhibits and his innovative way of creating best out of waste! Chandigarh is also a haven for shopping and one can eat to their hearts content at Gopal sweets! 🙂
That is a perfect itinerary for spending a day in Chandigarh. We are from Chandigarh and love the place to core. Sukhna Lake is perfect for morning and evening walks and the Sector 17 magical fountain with the romantic melodies running behind is always one of our favourite places in the evening. And surely Sector 35 and 26 have some great cafes.
