Sabarmati Ashram or Gandhi Ashram in the city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, was in many ways the centre of India’s freedom struggle. Mahatma Gandhi stayed here for a period of 12 years. These were eventful years that gave birth to important events that snowballed into a massive freedom struggle and culminated in India’s independence from British rule on the 15th of August, 1947.
The Museum at the Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad is dedicated to his life. Visitors are taken on the historical journey of Mahatma Gandhi from his birth in Porbandar, to his last breath in Delhi. The museum is known as Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya and was built in 1963. When you are at the Sabarmati Ashram, you will also see some of the replicas and original articles used by the Mahatma, in the house that he stayed in, which is called, “Hriday Kunj.”

2. Kirti Mandir- Gandhi Museums In India
Mahatma Gandhi was born at his ancestral home in Porbandar, Gujarat on 2, October 1869. Today a museum adjacent to the ancestral home of Mahatma Gandhi pays a silent tribute to his memory. The Kirti Mandir Museum has items of personal use of the Mahatma, life-size paintings depicting him and his wife Kasturba, a collection of old photographs, as well as books written by Mahatma Gandhi.
The museum opens to Mahatma Gandhi’s ancestral home, which can be accessed by visitors to the museum. The Gandhi Memorial here was inaugurated by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1950. The memorial rises to a height of 79 feet, which represents the 79 years of the Mahatma’s life. The memorial has architectural elements of Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian styles.

3. MGM Rajkot – Gandhi Museums In India
The Mahatma Gandhi Museum in Rajkot, MGM in short is a state-of-the-art museum that is housed in a heritage building that was once the school where Mahatma Gandhi studied. Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbandar and later moved with his family to Rajkot. He studied in what was then known as Kathiawar High School, during the period, 1880-1887. The school was later known as Alfred High School.
The Mahatma Gandhi Museum Rajkot, known as MGM Rajkot is housed in the same historic building that was once Mahatma Gandhi’s school. The museum consists of 39 galleries. The first 18 galleries showcase the life of Mahatma Gandhi, while galleries 19 to 39 showcase the principles and values that were dear to Mahatma Gandhi.

4. National Gandhi Museum – Gandhi Museums In India
The National Gandhi Museum stands opposite the samadhi of the Mahatma at Rajghat in Delhi. The 2-storey structure was formally inaugurated in 1961, on Sarvodaya Day by the then President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad.
The National Gandhi Museum is made up of 7 galleries, namely, the Entrance Gallery, the Spinning Wheel Gallery, the Photographic Gallery, the Martyrdom Gallery, the Art Gallery, and the Ashram Gallery. The museum houses many rare and original relics that are connected to Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi. It also has a rich collection of books, photographs, documents, journals, and audio-visual material related to Mahatma Gandhi and the freedom struggle.
