Much before the advent in Bangalore of the ubiquitous, “Darshinis,” which are self-service, standing restaurants, Bangalore had a tradition of homely restaurants. You could sit here and savour your idly or masala dosa leisurely while exchanging gossip with a neighbour or poring over the daily newspaper. One such restaurant was and is the Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room, which has been serving a loyal clientele since 1926.

Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room – Vintage Restaurant of South Bangalore | Best Veg Restaurant in Gandhi Bazaar, Bangalore
“Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room,” proclaims a large board painted in white over a blue background. You can see below the board, etched in the concrete, and barely discernible, the words, ‘ESTD 1926.” The restaurant is undoubtedly proud of its roots and legacy. The restaurant’s old-fashioned double doors, and windows with iron grills and ventilators, which have got a fresh coat of paint, stand in stark contrast to an ATM with glass doors that stands right next to it.
The Mahalaxmi Tiffin Room Basavanagudi Bangalore restaurant that started serving people almost a hundred years back and the ATM are silent milestones in the history of the city and the country. Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room is one of the best Veg Restaurants in Gandhi Bazaar Bangalore.
About Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room – In A Time Warp
As you enter the Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room, you get the impression of crossing the threshold of time, backwards. The restaurant is humming with activity. The chessboard patterned floor with black and white tiles is gleaming. The wooden chairs and marble-topped tables add to the vintage touch. A wooden menu board and a wooden showcase. Waiters with trademark dhotis tucked above the knees are busy taking orders and serving eager customers.
The scene is timeless, and you feel that you are back in the old Bangalore, the Bangalore of the ’50s or ’60s. or even earlier. The beauty however lies in the fact that this is not something that has been recreated, but a piece of history that is preserved, and is a living tradition.
Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room History
The Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room whose existence predates Vidyarthi Bhavan, however, has remained in its shadow. But this in no way is a reflection of its own status, it has its own clientele who swear by it. The restaurant is barely 200 metres from Vidyarthi Bhavan, and was established in 1926, and became a kind of literary networking centre for Kannada writers in the 90’s. It was a place where the literary discussions flowed freely and blended tantalisingly with the aroma of freshly ground coffee and roasted dosas.
What To Eat At Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room | Best South Indian Restaurant In Basavanagudi
If you are looking for a typical and authentic Bangalore breakfast to start the day, the Maha Lakshmi Tiffin Room is the place to head to. It is famous for its Khali Dosa and many swear by it.
Menu of Mahalaxmi Tiffin Room, Basavanagudi, Bangalore
The menu at Mahalaxmi Tiffin Room, Basavanagudi, Bangalore includes Masala Dosa, Idly, Uddina Vade, Khara Bhath, Poori, and Tomato rice bath. The sweet dishes or desserts are Gulab Jamun, Kesari Bhath, Badam Poori, and Carrot Halwa.
We order a Khalo Dosa and a Masala Dosa with Butter. And for starters, we order Idly Vada and Chow-Chow Bath, which is a scoop each of Kesari Bhath and Khara Bhath.
We enjoyed the idli which was soft and smooth as silk. The Vada was crispy and tasty. The Khara Bath and Kesaribath too were delicious. This whetted our appetite as the Khali Dosa and Masala dosa arrived. A generous dollop of white butter ornamented the folded masala dosa. We found both the dosas very tasty and well made.
After this filling breakfast, it was time to wash it all down with a tumbler of filter coffee. We found the food, really good and complete value for money.

I might not be a fan of Indian food but one thing I know that authenticity of food never fails, anywhere! For this place to withstand this long, it only tells you that it’s food is one of a kind and a must try. Amazing find and hope more people get to taste their food!

I’ve never visited Bengaluru but whenerver I visit there I’ll surely going see this place and eat all of these wonderful and tasty looking foods.
I have always loved vintage touch in restaurants as they carry the foundation and originality of tastes. Masala Dosa with Butter is my favourite.
