The Beginning of the Naropa Festival

A land where the clouds seem to kiss the ground. A place where the skies seem to be perennially painted in exquisite blue, a region high up with snow clad mountains and yet cradling an arid cold desert. The land is the region of Ladakh in the beautiful Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, a place that is heaven but tests the mettle of all forms of life during the harsh winters. It is this land that has given rise to a hardy mountain people who keep smiling even in the face of adversity. The simplicity and innocence of the people blossoms forth in the festivals celebrated in the region.

These festivals celebrate not only religion and spirituality but also are a celebration of life itself and are a medley of music and dance. One of the most important of these festivals is the Naropa festival which is held in the vicinity of the ancient Hemis monastery.

  1. Naropa is a grand spiritual festival in Ladakh. Ladakh’s Hemis monastery is home to frolic and celebration once every 12 years. The actual feel is to watch this festival live.
