Raees – Bollywood Movie Review
So the King Khan is back with Raees. Whether he is back with a bang, only time and the box office will tell. We watched the movie today – first day, first show! And here are our impressions of the ‘new Shahrukh’ starrer.
To set things straight at the beginning itself, if you are a hardcore Shahrukh fan and look forward to the trademark romance and candy floss that has become synonymous with his movies, then you will be in for a disappointment. He assumes a mellowed and smouldering avatar, quick on the draw with a gun rather than a rose. Of course, there are some moments of romance between him and the leading lady Mahira Khan which brings in a faint fragrance of the classic Shahrukh romance, but these are fleeting moments in an otherwise action oriented movie. The disclaimer at the beginning of the movie clarifies that it is a fictional account, however, there is no denying the fact that the incidents portrayed in it have an uncanny similarity to the events in the life of a self-styled underworld Don who strode the streets of Ahmedabad in the Nineties.
The movie maintains a fairly good pace and traces the life of a man, Raees, born into a poor family and inducted into the world of crime at a tender age. It has a candid look at his growth in stature fueled by the nexus between factions of politicians, police and the Underworld. The movie reaches its predictable end which is a dead end for people on the path of crime.
The movie is well directed by Rahul Dholakia, who is identified with his acclaimed Parzania . The movie is crisply edited and succeeds in capturing the Gujarati milieu including the local slang quite subtly and without a jarring note. The music is apt for the genre of the movie and nothing really magical about the songs, which at best serve as an interruption to the plot. The rehash of the Qurbani song with Sunny Leone providing some hot moments is apparently to draw in the crowds and was not required. It has probably scorched the charts is another matter, though.
In terms of acting, Shahrukh comes up with a fairly restrained performance and the Director’s efforts in moulding his character clearly stand out. Mahira Khan adds some colour to the proceedings in a minuscule role. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as Raees’ friend puts in a good performance too. But the honours are silently but surely stolen by Nawazuddin Siddiqui as an honest Police Officer on the track of Raees. Nawazuddin delivers his punch lines with cool aplomb and panache and wins the hearts of the audience by his performance. Atul Kulkarni as a senior underworld Don turns in an expectedly immaculate performance too.
Some, one-liners from Shahrukh in the movie have already become a rage and are sure to become a part of the evergreen dialogues of Bollywood. Some of the one-liner dialogues are mentioned below:
- Ammi jaan kehti thi: koi dhandha chhota nahi hota aur Dhandhe se bada koi dharm nahi hota
- Baniye ka dimaag aur
Miyaan bhai ki daring - Gujarat ki hawa mein vyaapar hai, saahib! Meri saans to rok loge, lekin iss hawa ko kaise rokoge
- Agar katne ka darr hota na
Toh patang nahi chadhata
Phirki pakadta… - Jo dhandhe ke liye sahi, Woh sahi
Jo dhandhe ke liye ghalat, Woh ghalat
isse zyada kabhi socha nahi - Apna time shuru
All in all the movie is worth watching for its direction and story, for Nawazuddin and of course for Shahrukh.
Raees is directed by Rahul Dholakia. It is produced by Gauri Khan, Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banners Red Chillies Entertainment and Excel Entertainment. Cast includes Shah Rukh Khan, Mahira Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Atul Kulkarni and Sunny Leone ( guest appearance in a dance sequence).
