What Is Bisle Ridge Point Near Bisle Ghat, Sakleshpur
The Ridge Point is located right beside state highway number 85, the road that leads to Kukke Subrahmanya, and Bisle Ghat viewpoint. It is about 5 kilometres from Bisle Ghat viewpoint.
We were visiting Sakleshpur and exploring its gems as guests of the Sakleshpur Homestay Owners Association. Sakleshpur was a complete revelation with its spectacular hills, waterfalls, and seemingly unending coffee estates. The Ridge Point was of course a unique and offbeat place to explore while in Sakleshpur.
In simple geographical terms, a ridge is defined as, ” a geographical feature consisting of a chain of mountains or hills that form a continuous elevated crest for some distance.” We were told that the ridges are a common feature in the Western Ghats, where Sakleshpur is located.
If you are wondering what is so special about the Ridge Point near Bisle Ghat, then in simple terms, it is a geographical point that divides the rainwater. To be more specific, it is a point from where rainwater flows in opposite directions.
The Ridge Point near Bisle Ghat is located in a village called Mankanahalli. Rainwater that falls towards the western side of the ridge flows into the Netravathi and Sharavathi rivers before meeting the Arabian Sea. The rain that falls towards the eastern side of the ridge flows eastwards, joining the Hemavathy and the Kaveri rivers, before finally keeping its rendezvous with the Bay of Bengal.
There is a stone marker which marks the spot which has been geographically surveyed and determined to be a ridge point. It is believed that the original stone marker was installed by British surveyors.
Sudeep, owner of a homestay in Sakleshpur who graciously showed us many of the attractions of Sakleshpur gave more details of the Ridge Point in Sakleshpur. He informed us that the original stone marker erected by the British was faded and in a dilapidated condition. The Sakleshpur Homestay Owners Association had renovated it and marked it clearly so that tourists could understand and appreciate the significance of the Ridge Point.
As we stood watching the ridge point, we could barely imagine how the point bisected the land into two with rainwater flowing in opposite directions from here.
As if on cue, a rooster suddenly appeared from nowhere, majestically strutting along the narrow elevated ridge, as if showing the exact line that divided the rain falling on the earth.
