Places To Visit In Mumbai In One Day

Mumbai is Mumbai. I thought as I looked out of the window at the magical city of Mumbai rushing towards the plane as if eager to meet me, an old friend returning to its embrace. In a flash, all the memories associated with Mumbai whirred through my mind and I could feel the same thrill of adrenaline coursing through my being on visiting Mumbai which I always felt. It was just about an hour ago that I had boarded one of the flights to Mumbai and here I was about to land in the city of dreams again. It is possible to get a feel of Mumbai city through an itinerary that incorporates all the places to visit in Mumbai in one day.

Exploring the Spirit of Mumbai City

For me, every city that I visit has a persona of its own. Each city has a unique character and its vibes can be literally felt as soon as you set foot on its soil. I have experienced this whenever I have visited cities in India and across the world, be it Delhi, Paris, Zurich, Rome, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai or any other city in the world. But Mumbai has an inexplicable charm and allure of its own, a raw and earthy beauty, a place that pulls you to its bosom again and again from wherever you are. So it may come as no surprise that I periodically board one of the Bangalore to Mumbai flights on one pretext or the other. In fact, circumstances and destiny collude to ensure trips to Mumbai are lined up frequently for me. Probably that is the hypnotic power of Mumbai.

Mumbai has a varied store of experiences awaiting the traveller that ranges from heritage to contemporary. People from across India and the world come for Mumbai sightseeing, many come on a one day trip to Mumbai for business, some combine business with pleasure and try to cover all the places to visit in Mumbai in one day. Of course, visiting places in Mumbai in one day is not easy. If one has at least 2 days at disposal then one can easily try to cover the places to visit in Mumbai for 2 days. For me, a Mumbai visit was more of a homecoming. Having spent long periods in the city, walking along the beach, hanging on to the bars of local trains, and gorging on the ubiquitous Vada Pav, I craved on reliving the many unique experiences that Mumbai had to offer.

Here are listed some of the Mumbai experiences and sights which happen to be my favourite and which I relive again and again.

Lose Yourself in the Vibes of the Gateway of India

The waves of the Arabian Sea tossing in the distance and the salty air caressing your face seems to have a therapeutic effect at The Gateway of India. A walk around the Gateway of India is something of a pilgrimage of sorts for me and I try to fit this into my schedule whenever I happen to be in Mumbai. The Gateway of India of course figures in the list of places to visit in Mumbai in one day for most travellers. For me however it is something more than just marvelling at the grandeur of the Victorian structure that seems to preside over the city of Mumbai, it is more about absorbing the entire atmosphere and feeling the vibes of the place.

Visit The Mystical Environs of Haji Ali

Mumbai is a city that welcomes and makes its own people from all religions and ethnicities It is the land of opportunity that opens its doors to all and sundry.

The Haji Ali Dargah in the middle of the Arabian Sea, a unique mosque, as well as a tomb, epitomizes this very spirit of Mumbai. Whenever I have been in the area, the mosque in the midst of the sea has always captivated and riveted my attention. It lies about 500 meters away from the coast on a small islet in the Arabian Sea. One can walk to the Mosque during low tide by means of a footpath, it is not possible to visit the Dargah during high tide. The Haji Ali Dargah was built in the 15th century in memory of a Muslim merchant by the name of Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. The Muslim merchant who was originally from a place called Bukhara, now referred to as Uzbekistan had settled in Mumbai and was living the life of a saint and spreading the teachings of Islam in the area. Millions of visitors of all religions visit the Haji Ali Dargah which shines like a white pearl in the Arabian Sea. A visit to Haji Ali is a must-see attraction in any traveller’s list of places to visit in Mumbai in one day.

Riding the Western Line from Bandra to Churchgate

The rumbling of the local trains and the sound that they make when they leave a station has always fascinated me and sounds like music to my ears. The life inside a Mumbai local train is another experience that is on a different level altogether. However, the best way to experience the local trains for me has been to take a local train from Bandra to Churchgate and back, sometime in the afternoon when the trains are relatively empty. At Churchgate, I get off and walk up till Nariman Point or on occasions I walk in another direction to Victoria Terminus, imbibing the spirit and energy of Mumbai. This is not likely to figure in the typical list of places to visit in Mumbai in one day of the usual traveller, but the experience is quite dear to me.

An Evening at Juhu Beach

Juhu beach is very popular with tourists as well as locals alike and figures prominently in everyone’s list of places to visit in Mumbai in one day. It is vibrant with activity in the evenings and a great place to head for a family getaway. Horse carriage rides and camel rides along the sandy beach attract children while adults can simply lounge on the beach or walk along the shore looking at the waves of the Arabian Sea crashing on the beach. I like to visit the Juhu Beach just for the joyous vibes, the musical sound of children laughing, and the spicy chaats.

Bite Into the Taste of Mumbai

Whether this experience finds its way into the bucket list of most people or is in the list of places to visit in Mumbai in one day and local food to eat, who cares. Vada Pavs are meant to be relished without a care in the world. One needs to bite into the soft and at the same time crispy Pav and delight in the taste of the Vada as you break through a layer of spicy chutney.

Take a Walk Along Chapel Road

Places To Visit In Mumbai In One Day – Chapel Road, Mumbai

One of the most cherished memories of Mumbai has always been walking the streets of Mumbai lost in its eternal charm. The roads of Mumbai, be it the Linking Road of Bandra, the Marine Drive, Napean Sea Road, or the Shahid Bhagat Singh Road near the Colaba Causeway have stories to unfold around each bend and in each corner. One of my favourite walking places has been Chapel Road. A road that I have trod on a hundred if not a thousand times. The road is a narrow street that connects Bandra West station to the Reclamation area. Small and quaint houses dot the meandering street and one can find colourful and vibrant street art looking down upon you as you make your way through the winding street. Yes, a visit to Chapel Road may not figure in anyone’s bucket list or on their list of places to visit in Mumbai in one day, but it definitely is worth a visit for a unique experience.

These are a few of the experiences that are synonymous with the spirit of Mumbai and are close to my heart.

Mumbai, the city of dreams is like a cross-section of India with its cosmopolitan culture. It is the city where the modern and the traditional merge seamlessly. 1. I love the beach so Juhu Beach would be a must-visit for me. I’d love to take a walk along Chapel Road too. There’s so much to take in and I would love to see it all.

  2. I don’t know if we will ever make it over to visit this beautiful place. If we do we know what to go and see and do .

  3. Mumbai looks like an interesting place to explore. I have never been to India but I do know that it is a gorgeous country. I would love to explore all over the country.

  4. This is definitely a perfect place that I should add on my bucket list. I think I will try to visit those beautiful spots.

  5. I’ve only been to Mumbai once, and was a teenager back then, would love to visit again now and see all the many things I missed (a lot more than I ever imagined actually). Not to mention getting stuck in to the food scene (I stayed with family then and they didn’t like to eat out!)

  6. That’s a pretty packed one-day itinerary in Mumbai! Keeping in mind the traffic can be quite chaotic in many areas of Mumbai, I think it’s going to be a long day. I love the vibe on Juhu Beach in the evening. Actually, I couldn’t believe how many people hang around the beach until the wee hours of the morning.

  7. I saw an American television programme recently on Mumbai and looks great to visit. But after reading this, this is probably the city I want to land into India (for the first time and hopefully soon) and then start my trip from here. So much history and culture (I know its a business city as well). Really cant wait to get to india. Loving your photos also.

  8. India has always fascinated me! I would love to travel to India because I feel like it would be the ultimate adventure, especially in such a bustling metropolis such as Mumbai! Juhu Beach looks so lovely.

  9. I have been to Mumbai many times and it never fail to amaze me. I love to hangout around the Gateway of India and stroll around the streets. Each side of the roads tells many stories. Definitely one of my favourite cities.

  10. Gateway of India and Juhu Beach I did in a single day I had in Mumbai but I couldn’t visit Haji Ali 🙁 That place attracts me but somehow I couldn’t make the trip happen. Maybe in near future.
