Human By Nature | In God’s Own Country – Amazing Kerala

human by nature

Kerala – God’s own country, is not only a land of stunning landscapes, culture, and heritage, it is also inhabited by people who are truly human by nature.

“Kerala”, the name itself is enough to set the mind soaring amidst the romantic backwaters of the region. The heart skips a beat as the mind continues its flight of fancy into the forests and beaches of the land that seems to have been crafted with extra love by God’s own hands. The heart starts beating to the rhythm of drums and dances with the mesmerizing steps of Kathakali. A serene calm pervades the mind as it kneels down at the many magnificent churches that dot the stunning landscapes of Kerala. Hands rise involuntary in benediction at the mosques as the peal of temple bells resonate with divine energy.

Kerala is indeed a sensory experience beyond compare, a state of India that has carved for itself a unique position, chiseled by history and embellished by nature. But Kerala is much more, it is a celebration of life, a place inhabited by people who are rooted and take pleasure in the simple things of life, people who are human by nature. Join us on a journey across Kerala, a journey that has opened our eyes to the beauty of the world and its inhabitants and taught us how the only way to live in harmony is being human by nature.

The richness of Kerala comes as much to the fore in the diversity of its culture as it does in its enchanting natural landscapes. You may wake up and watch the golden rays of the rising sun while cruising on the backwaters and end the day with waves lapping at your feet as you watch the sun go down in a blaze of glory on the seashore.

The beauty of Kerala lies as much in its rich heritage which is the legacy of multiple cultures as it does in its people who give the term, “Human by nature”, a new meaning. The welcoming smiles of the people as they go about their lives fills one with joy which is compounded multiple times by the surroundings.

Welcome To God’s Own Country

Human By Nature

“Welcome to Kerala, God’s own country”, said Anita with a broad smile, unlocking the Mani-Chitra-Taal and opening the doors with a flourish. For the uninitiated, Mani-Chitra-Taal is an ancient locking system. We were on a visit to Kumarakom, one of the top tourist places in Kerala, looking forward to our Kerala vacation, and had checked into a resort to spend some days in magical Kerala. The doors opened to reveal the rich heritage and beauty of Kerala spiced with the wide smile of Anita. A state which is a mind-boggling mosaic of experiences.

Human By Nature – Rising With The Sun At Cherai

Kerala boat cruise

The darkness wrapped itself snugly over the jetty. The colour was changing from black to grey on the distant horizon. “Namaskaram”, said the boatman with a broad smile stretching out his hand to help us onboard. Gopi, that was his name made us comfortable in our seats on the boat, picked up his oar, and we glided softly away.

The darkness slowly evaporated as the golden rays of the rising sun reflected in the waters. The chirping of birds resonated from the banks as our boat sailed into the middle of the lagoon that was fringed by coconut palms. The sun peeped from behind the swaying palms. It was a magical moment, an experience beyond the frontiers of words. Fishermen casting their nets waved at us as we passed them by, their every gesture exuding a welcoming warmth.

Kerala backwaters

Gopi went about his business of rowing, a smile on his lips, a man in harmony with his surroundings, and the silence that reigned on the backwaters, bar the sounds of the birds and the sound of his oar hitting the waters. Gopi didn’t speak a word for the entire one hour of the early morning cruise that we did on the serene backwaters in Cherai.

Only his eyes spoke and so did the brilliant smile that lit up his eyes, he conveyed everything without a word. As we left the boat thanking him for the surreal experience, he again folded his hands and said, “Namaskaram”. We walked away marvelling at the man and the satisfaction and happiness that glowed on his face, one of the many humans by nature that we encountered in our journeys across Kerala.

A Journey Across The Fascinating Waterways of Alappuzha

Human by nature

Two boys smiled and waved shyly at us and quickly averted their faces when they saw our cameras. They were playing outside there home as we cruised in a canoe that zigzagged along the intricate waterways of Alappuzha, also known as the Venice of the East.

Alappuzha Kerala

As we glided like quicksilver in and out of the narrow waterways that linked the villages around Alappuzha, the tableaux of life itself unveiled before our eyes and presented a visual feast. Women bargaining with a vendor, children with shining faces going to school huddled in boats, a saga of humans by nature, of nature, and for nature had us enthralled.

Road Tripping Across Kerala

Human By Nature

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Kerala is through road trips. We have experienced Kerala’s natural beauty on numerous road trips. The changing landscapes, the quaint little churches that rub shoulders with mosques, and temples, lend a divine touch to the experience. Wayside tea stalls with the tea vendor pouring tea like a conjuring act add to the surreal experience. A road trip in Kerala is a great way to experience the adage, “human by nature”, as you meet the people living in the interiors of the state and interact with them. You are bowled over by the simple sincerity and joy they exude.

Human By Nature – A Walk Down The Lane of History in Kochi

Kochi

An exciting ferry ride takes you to Fort Kochi. As you merge with the people making their way out of the boat, you feel one with them, bonded by the emotion of being human by nature. An emotion that binds together people cutting across the boundaries of social strata, caste, and religion.

#human by nature

As you walk along the historic Princess Street in Fort Kochi, you wonder about the successive cultures that have shaped the region. The local kings, Portuguese, Chinese, Dutch, British, every culture has contributed and left its mark in the region, be it in the form of synagogues, art, and architecture, music, and dance. The beauty lies in the fact that all these different influences blend together in harmony. Today Fort Kochi is “living history”, and one of the highlights of Kerala tourism.

Sunset Over The Vembanad Lake

sunset at Vembanad Lake

The cool breeze caresses your face. The sun disappears with kaleidoscopic glory over the Vembanad Lake. The magic of Kerala becomes a part of you and you feel one with the land and the people of Kerala, you feel more human by nature. This is something that all travellers to Kerala will experience. They will go back with stories of the land, especially the human scape of Kerala who are an embodiment of the precept #humanbynature.

  1. This sounds amazing. The morning boat ride is such a peaceful way to start a day and the vegetation along the canals is incredible. Would like to spend time at Fort Kochi, living history always interests me

  2. Finishing the day with a view of the water and sunset was a great way to start your resort stay. It would be interesting to see the fishermen working with those unique nets. We only saw the nets after they were pulled in for the day. So great to get to take a boat though the smaller settlements. We did indeed find the history at Kochi to be fascinating. With so many different cultures.

  4. What a beautiful place! Like you I think I would be drawn to the unique culture, and the opportunity to meet and spend time with locals who could give us the insight into the region. Good to hear that you recommend a riad-based itinerary, and I would also taste time to see the region via its waterways. Lovely photos! Can see how much you loved Kerala!

Kerala is so beautiful with lush green hill stations and the coastline. Your post has reminded me of our visit to Munnar and Kochi.

  10. I think that I will be the only person commenting your article who has never heard of Kerala before. Thank you for introducing it to me. It looks so exotic, especially the masks and the face paintings.

  11. Kerala certainly is Gods own country and one of my favorite destinations in India. Having been there a lot of times on business I would still get up early at least once during every trip and head to the port area in Kochi to witness the sunrise. The Vembanad Lake sunset is so beautiful. The green all around as you boat made me nostalgic and refreshed.

  12. Very interesting read! You can see the culture of the area just by looking at your photos. The trip through the waterways of Alappuzha looks like a great experience! I always find it interesting how people of some cultures don’t like the cameras/getting their photos taken. I would love just people watching as they go about their usual day.

  13. Kerala is truly beautiful. I have loved travelling in that amazing pretty state. From watching the fishing nets to floating in a house boat, the state has everything that is beautiful.

  14. We have always been curious about visiting Kerala. After reading a number of posts online about this wonderful place, we can’t help but be interested to visit. Thank you for sharing this. I look forward to visiting soon.

  15. Kerala is surely God’s own country – beautiful, serene and culturally rich. I am yet to visit Kerala, but I am planning to visit here very soon. I am particularly interested in visiting Kochi because of its history and architecture and Kannur for the Theyyam. It was lovely reading about your journey in Kerala.
