Udupi: The Temple Town

The Flag changing ceremony at the Dwarkadhish temple is an important and traditional ritual of the temple, a 52-yard flag is changed 5 times a day. The flag is an offering by the devotees, and there is a waiting time of more than 2 years for devotees to get their turn to offer a flag at the Dwarkadhish temple. The Dwarkadhish temple flag has the symbols of the Sun and the Moon on it.

Mirabai, the legendary Saint, mystic, and ardent devotee of Krishna, is believed to have merged with the idol of Krishna in Dwarka.

The Gugalli Brahmins conduct all the rituals and worship at the Dwarkadhish temple. According to legend, Shri Krishna, himself brought the Gugalli Brahmins to Dwarka, to conduct religious rituals.

The city of Dwarka has a divine connection with faraway Udupi in Karnataka. It is believed that the idol of Krishna in Udupi has origins in Dwarka, and miraculously landed in Udupi via the sea, where it was established by Madhavacharya.

It is fascinating to note that it is believed that the current Dwarka that we all visit and love is the seventh version of the ancient city. It is believed that Dwarka was submerged six times in the sea, including the original city built by Krishna. One of the versions of the Dwarkadhish temple is believed to have been built by a grandson of Krishna named Vajranabha.

The temple faced major damage in the year 1472, and the current structure was built in the 16th century during the rule of the Chaulukya dynasty. Going by accounts in the Mahabharata, Krishna established his Yaduvanshi kingdom in Dwarka between 3000 to 5000 years ago.

Expeditions done by the Marine Archaeology Unit of the National Institute of Oceanography between 1983 and 1981, off the coast of Dwarka have discovered submerged structures. These are believed to be part of the submerged city of Dwarka.
