The legend of the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga makes for fascinating reading. Legend has it that the area where the temple is located now was known as Darukavana in ancient times. A demon or Rakshas called Daruk lived here along with his wife who was named Daruka. They used to harass the people who inhabited the area. Tired of the constant torment of the demonic couple, the residents approached a sage named Aursh, who assured them all help.

Aursh through his penance pleased the deities who appeared before him. Aursh asked the deities to get rid of the demons and protect the inhabitants of the region. The deities agreed and launched an attack on the demons. It so happened that Daruka was devoted to Parvati and had been showered with special powers and boons. Using these she placed the entire Darukavana forest in the middle of the sea, safe from the deities.

After a few months, the demons captured some boats sailing across the sea and made the people on the boats prisoners. One of these prisoners was a man named Supriya, who was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. In spite of being a captive Supriya continues his worship of Lord Shiva and inspired by him, many of the other prisoners too, followed suit. When Daruk, the demon came to know about it, he was filled with wrath and tried to kill the Shiva devotee, Supriya.

Lord Shiva who never forsakes his devotees, instantly materialized and vanquished and killed Daruk. On hearing about the death of Daruk, his wife Daruka, ran to Parvati for solace. It was then that Lord Shiva and Parvati decided to establish themselves at the spot to protect the welfare of their devotees. Thus was the genesis of the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga.

The temple of Nageshwar is sacred as it is believed to be a place sanctified by the presence of Lord Shiva and Parvati. It is also believed that the Pandavas visited here during their exile. Today a beautiful temple covers the Jyotirlinga. The inner sanctum where the Jyotir Linga presides is located below the ground level. A Shikhara rises above the Garba Griha in typical Nagara architectural style. A mandapam and ardha mandapam lead towards the Garbha Griha.

There are beautiful statues of the entire Shiva family, Lord Shiva, Parvati, and their children Ganesh and Kartikeya sitting on their laps. Outside are the images of Ganesh and Hanuman.

A little to the side of the main temple stands the colossal statue of Shiva, gazing into eternity.
