Times Square
New York boasts the most famous park in the world, and it most probably boasts the most famous public square in the world for good measure. Drawing in more visitors annually than any other place in the city, Times Square is a vibrant, bright, colorful carnival all year round – but seeing the ball drop on New Year’s Eve would definitely be a bucket list entry. You don’t have to pay for shows, performances or tickets to anything – just get there early and people watch until your heart is content.
The African Burial Ground
Now a historically important memorial, the African Burial Ground was discovered as late as 1991 and is the oldest and largest known excavated burial site for free and enslaved Africans. Some 15,000 of them were buried in and around Manhatten throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, and this location has been designated a national monument and landmark that seeks to respectfully preserve the legacy of those Africans who – for better or worse – played a vital role in making New York the city that it is today. The Staten Island Ferry
Many people might balk at paying around 20 bucks for a trip to see New York’s most famous landmark – lady liberty herself – but they’ll still do it anyway as it’s just the done thing in these parts. The New York Library
A location star of many a movie and one of the city’s most beloved buildings, New York’s library has to be seen to be believed. It’s the largest marble structure in the US, and even from the approach up the steps outside you know it’s going to be a jaw-dropping experience. Literary quotes adorn the sidewalk as you marvel at the beauty of the architecture, guarded by the sculpted lion mascots ‘Patience’ and ‘Fortitude.’ But it is the enormous Rose Main Reading Room that will really leave you speechless – which is probably a good thing because you’re still a library.
The High Line
Opening in 2009, the High Line is a public park that utilizes an old, elevated railway that was due for demolition but rescued at the 11th hour. It meanders through the historic Meat Packing District on Manhatten’s west side and is a nice alternative to exploring the area from the busy streets below. Guided tours are available, but it costs nothing to leisurely wander the 1.45 miles as the sun goes down. Or as it comes up – as the park is open from 7 am to 10 pm every day.
