Nestled in the tranquil Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Bir and Billing are far more than  points on the map—they together curate an experience shaped by wind, altitude, and awe. As we arrived in Bir, the mountains did not merely frame the horizon; they seemed to call us upward, inviting us to trust the sky.

Paragliding In Bir Billing – Adventure In The Skies

Thrilling Paragliding In Bir Billing - Himalayan Skies
Paragliding in Bir Billing

We were on the last leg of our Himachal Pradesh road trip, and as we drove through the winding road, our excitement reached a crescendo, for our next destination was Bir, renowned for paragliding, and one of the most sought after adventure hubs in India. Our road trip had begun from Amritsar in Punjab from where we had driven to Pathankot, and then to Dalhousie, Khajjiar, Dharamshala, and now we were headed to India’s Paragliding Capital.

Bir and Billing are two different places, though they are closely connected and often mentioned together. Bir is a small, peaceful village known for its cafés, homestays, monasteries, and the paragliding landing site. Most people choose to stay in Bir, and so did we, at a luxury camping site, called Tattva Bir Tents and Hotels. Billing is located higher up in the mountains, about 14 km from Bir, and serves as the paragliding take-off point. This is where the thrill begins!

Paragliding in Bir Billing – The Ultimate Adventure

Paragliding in Bir Billing - The Ultimate Adventure

When we arrived in Bir in the afternoon, we headed straight to one of the many paragliding centers near the landing site. We didn’t even stop to check into our hotel first—our excitement wouldn’t allow it. The moment we reached Bir, all we wanted was to get airborne. We were fresh from our experience of paragliding in Khajjiar, just the day before, and were looking forward to the paragliding experience of Bir Billing.

Paragliding in Bir Billing and Khajjiar offers very different experiences. Bir Billing is considered one of the best paragliding destinations in the world, known for high-altitude take-offs, long flight durations, strong thermals, and panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range. Flights here can last 15–30 minutes or more, making it ideal for serious adventure seekers. Khajjiar, often called the “Mini Switzerland of India,” offers shorter, gentler flights over lush meadows and forests. It is better suited for first-time flyers and families looking for a scenic, less intense experience.

Experiencing Paragliding In Bir Billing | Paragliding In Himachal Pradesh

Paragliding In Himachal Pradesh

Paragliding in Bir Billing is one of the top three adventure activities in India, the others being river rafting in Rishikesh and Surfing in Mulki, Karnataka. We were high on adrenaline as we looked around, The vast blue sky was alive with a graceful ballet of colourful parachutes, drifting and dancing joyfully upon the wind. Their vibrant canopies speckled the heavens like moving blossoms against an endless azure canvas.

At that moment, with a single glance upward, it became abundantly clear why this enchanting place is celebrated as the paragliding capital—where the sky itself seems to invite adventurers to rise, soar, and become one with the wind. We were near the landing site in Bir, a vast open ground with colourful cafes and shops around the periphery.

We followed our paragliding instructors toward a waiting car. With effortless ease, they carried the bulky bundles of paragliding gear strapped securely to their backs. Meanwhile, we walked beside them with a lively spring in our steps, our hearts quickening with excitement and anticipation, knowing that in a short while we would be soaring through the open skies.

Leap of Faith In Billing

Leap of Faith In Billing

The drive from Bir to Billing is as exhilarating as the flight that follows. The distance is about 16 kilometres and the drive takes about 45-40 minutes, and you climb an altitide of about 2500 metres, and that is the height from which you will be taking your leap of faith. The narrow mountain road winds its way steadily upward through dense forests of pine and deodar, with every turn revealing sweeping views of the Kangra Valley far below.

Small mountain hamlets, terraced fields, and fluttering prayer flags lend a quiet charm to the journey. As the vehicle climbs higher, the air turns cooler and crisper, carrying the scent of the mountains. There was a slight drizzle, and that added to the mystical charm of the moment.

Leap of Faith In Billing

We stepped out of the car, and right beside the road lay a broad, rocky expanse—flat and smooth like a natural tabletop. This, we were told, was the take-off site. As we moved closer, we watched two paragliders sprint forward and vanish effortlessly over the edge, their canopies catching the wind as they slipped into the vast sky.

Curiosity drew us onward. With cautious steps, we walked to the edge and peered over, a slight tremor of trepidation running through us. Before us yawned a dramatic drop of nearly 2,500 metres. Far below, the patchwork of fields and the landing site of Bir stretched across the valley floor, appearing distant and almost dreamlike. In that moment, standing on the brink between earth and sky, the thrill of what lay ahead coursed through us.

Strapped securely into our harnesses

In no time, we were strapped securely into our harnesses and instructed to run a few metres towards the very edge of the precipice, from where a sheer drop of nearly 2,500 metres yawned below. The heavy parachute behind us tugged insistently, its weight resisting our steps, and we found ourselves half-running, half-dragging forward with determined effort. Then, in a moment that felt nothing short of magical, the ground slipped away beneath our feet. Suddenly we were airborne, lifted gently by the wind, soaring high above the lush green fields and scattered hamlets that spread like a vibrant tapestry across the valley of Bir far below us.

Me paragliding in Bir Billing with Rinku Instructor

“How does it feel?” came a voice from behind. It was Rinku, the paragliding pilot secured in the harness just behind me—the man who was now, quite literally, pulling the strings as he skilfully guided our flight through the open sky. With calm assurance, he steered the canopy with subtle movements, occasionally executing playful manoeuvres that sent us spinning in a dizzying 360-degree arc, suspended high above the earth. For a few exhilarating moments, the world below whirled into a blur of fields, forests, and distant hills, while we floated weightlessly between sky and valley, carried effortlessly by the wind.

Me in the sky at Bir Billing

The flight lasted for about fifteen to twenty minutes, each moment unfolding like a quiet dream in the open sky. Then, all too soon, it was time to return. The ground of Bir slowly rose to meet us as we glided gently towards the landing site. At the pilot’s cue, we stretched our legs forward, and with a light, steady touch, landed feet first upon the earth. The journey through the skies had come to an end, but we carried with us a rare and blissful experience—one that would remain etched in our hearts as a memory of a lifetime.
