Here are 10 places to visit in Gujarat, India, that bring alive the rich heritage and culture of the state in all its glory.
This is our wishlist of some of the places to visit in Gujarat. It has been our good fortune to have spent a considerable part of our lives in Gujarat. The waters of the Narmada, Sabarmati, Mahi, and Tapi have nurtured us. We have gazed in wonder at the icon of resilience, the Somnath Jyotirling Temple, and felt the love of Lord Krishna at Dwarka.
We have jumped with joy as colourful kites floated in the blue skies at the International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad. The roar of the lions of Gir has awed us, while the serenity of the Sabarmati Ashram and the Mahatma Gandhi Museum in Rajkot have filled our beings with peace. However there is so much of Gujarat that lies unexplored, there is so much that we want to discover, that we have drawn up our own wishlist of places to visit in Gujarat.
It was our privilege to have associated with Gujarat Tourism on a social media campaign titled, “Hum Phir Aayenge Gujarat,” where we pledged to visit Gujarat again. It is now time to redeem that pledge, if not in full measure, at least substantially, so here are some of the places that we would love to visit in Gujarat.

Statue of Unity – Inspiring Places to Visit In Gujarat
The Statue of Unity which towers at a height of 182 metres is a symbol of the integrity and unity of India. The Iron Man, Sardar Patel, has always been synonymous with the unity and resilience of India as a nation. A towering figure of India’s freedom movement, The Statue of Unity is a fitting tribute to the colossal personality of Sardar Patel. We would love to visit the tallest statue in the world and feel our hearts swell with pride as we prostrate in obeisance before it.
Dholavira – Gujarat’s 4th UNESCO World Heritage Site
Our travels across the world have kindled a deep interest in archaeology and the great civilizations of the world. Dholavira is the latest UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gujarat, and we are really eager to visit the place. Dholavira is believed to have been one of the largest cities of its time. The ruins of Dholavira echo with the sounds from the past and beckon us to its fold.
Lothal – Gujarat’s Link To The Past
Another place that highlights the advanced development of India and Gujarat even thousands of years ago is Lothal. It is believed to have been one of the world’s earliest port cities. The town planning skills posessed by those who lived here more than 3,000 years ago comes across in the ruins that remain of the ancient city of Lothal. This is another of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Gujarat.
Rani Ki Vav, Patan – UNESCO World Heritage Site
The ancient stepwells of Gujarat are architectural and engineering wonders that have survived the ravages of time and nature. Be it the stepwell of Adalaj or those in Junagadh, these Stepwells or, “Vavs”, as they are locally known are fascinating. One of the best known stepwell is the Rani Ki Vav in Patan. This is another UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gujarat. It is famed for its massive dimensions and for its exquisite sculptures.
Champaner – Pavagadh Archaeological Park
The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is another UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gujarat. It is a place with many monuments with tremendous historical and archaeological importance. Memories of a visit to Pavagadh temple haunt us and we hope to visit the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park and lose ourselves in the many temples, gates, mosques, and stepwells, that are located there.
Rann of Kutch – Incredible Places To Visit In Gujarat
The wide expase of White Rann of Kutch has always mesmerized us, but somehow we have not been able to feast our eyes on this phenomenon of nature, despite being so near. Now the call of the desert is becoming irresistible and we hope to indulge our senses in the White Rann of Kutch, sooner, rather than later. After all nothing can be more spectacular than watching the sun rise or set across the never-ending expanse of the salt lands.
Saputara – Beautiful Places To Visit in Gujarat
Saputara is a place that we have vague memories of having visited in childhood. These are memories of lush green meadows, exhilarating views, and pleasant weather. Saputara in the Sahyadris beckons with its natural beauty. We would love to lose ourselves in the beautiful expanse of Saputara, one of the few hill stations of Gujarat.
Palitana – Pride of Gujarat
While visiting the famous Ranakpur Jain Temple in Rajasthan, we learned that the temple was built after Dharni Shah visited the Shetrunji Hills in Palitana, and was inspired by the sanctity of the place. The famous Jain temples of Palitana dot the sacred Shetrunjaya Hill, where Adinatha, the first Jain Tirthankara had meditated. We would love to visit this hallowed place for its spiritual and historical value.
Dandi – Historic Places To Visit In Gujarat
Having lived a few kilometres from the famous Sabarmati Ashram, the presence of Mahatma Gandhi has always haunted us. The tranquil environs of the historic Sabarmati Ashram has never failed to touch a chord within us whenever we have visited there. We now want to explore the Gandhi trail further in Gujarat and Dandi happens to be the most historic of these places. A bonus at Dandi is of course, the beautiful Dandi Beach.
Siddhpur – Amazing Places To Visit in Gujarat
Siddhpur connects the present with the past. it is believed that Siddhpur stands on the banks of what remains of the sacred Saraswati River. Apart from the mythological and spiritual connection, Siddhpur is on our radar because of the exquisite architecture of the town. We would love to feast our eyes on the colourful and aesthetically designed mansions that dot the town.
These are only some of the places to visit in Gujarat that we are looking forward to experiencing. Gujarat is indeed a state with many colours and has beautiful gems strewn all over. Gujarat is a state that needs to be experienced with the heart, along with the warmth and hospitality of its people.

Each of these places looks amazing guys. How about that statue? HUGE. It reminds me a tiny bit of the Gandhi statue I saw in Pondy but goodness, so much bigger and more eye-popping. I say it through many of my comments but visiting India is similar to visiting 70-100 different countries any time you travel within its borders. Culture, foods, customs, natural beauty; even though a similar undercurrent runs through all, we spot subtle or more dramatic differences by hitting the road. I did when traveling from west to east coasts on the southern end of the country back in 2013. Thanks for sharing with us.
