Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025 – Redefining Meetings in Paradise
The Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025 was organized by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, under the aegis of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism. The event commenced with a Business Forum and Welcome Dinner at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo on 22 September 2025, setting the stage for a landmark gathering. The formal inauguration was presided over by Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, at Cinnamon Life, Colombo. This was followed by a dynamic business session where international buyers from around the world engaged in one-on-one interactions with Sri Lanka’s travel and tourism stakeholders, fostering meaningful connections and future collaborations.
Following the networking sessions and formal discussions, delegates were treated to an immersive familiarization tour, offering them a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and vibrant cultural heritage. The itinerary also included visits to prospective MICE venues, allowing participants to gain firsthand insight into the country’s facilities and infrastructure. The Sri Lanla MICE Expo was held from the 22nd of September, 2025, to 26th of September, 2025. As one of the 15 international media covering the event we had a ringside view, and we bring a complete report of the events that unfolded as part of the fifth edition of Sri Lanka MICE Expo.
Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025 – Day One – Business Forum And Welcome Dinner
As twilight fell on 22 September, 2025, the grand halls of the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo came alive, where the curtains rose on the Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025—ushering in a new chapter in the country’s journey as a premier business events destination.

Traditional Sri Lankan drummers set the tone for the MICE Expo 2025, quite literally sounding the drumroll with a spellbinding performance that captivated the audience and infused the evening with cultural vibrancy. The MICE Expo 2025, the largest MICE gathering in Sri Lanka began with a welcome address by Mrs Malkanthi Welikala, Manager Marketing, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau. In her address, she welcomed the delegates, stating that the presence of over 100 MICE travel agents and 15 travel media delegates, from over 30 countries spanning Asia and Oceania, China, Europe, CIS, and the Middle East, was in itself a testimony to the rising stature of Sri Lanka as a preferred global MICE destination.

Mrs Achini Dandunnage, Acting General Manager, of the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, gave an informative presentation on, “Why Sri Lanka should be a preferred destination for MICE Tourism.”
This was followed by a high powered panel discussion on, ” The Future of MICE Tourism in Sri Lanka in a changing world.” The session was moderated by Mr Dileep Mudadeniya, Chairperson of Sri Lanka’s Tourism Advisory Committee. The panel included emintent tourism policymakers and stakeholders of Sri Lanka, the esteemed members of the panel were; Mr Dheera Hettiarachchi, Chairman, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau and Sri Lanka Institite of Tourism & Hotel Management; Mr Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau; Mr Saminda Perera, Head of Marketing, SriLankan Airlines; Bobby Jordan Hansen, Vice President, SLAITO (Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators).
Replying to a question about the vison of Sri Lanka Convention Bureau and the government to position Sri Lanka as a top MICE destination given the growth in MICE tourism globally and more specifically Asia, Mr Dheera Hettiarachchi, Chairman, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, stated that the MICE sector had been recognized as a major economic pillar under the government’s current policies. He noted that the country’s economic growth was stable at 4.9 percent, interest rates were low, and investments were on the rise.
In this context, he explained that multiple strategies were being implemented to advance the MICE sector, including simplifying visa and investment policies and increasing the capacity of the national airline—all aimed at building a sustainable MICE industry for the future. He also emphasized the compactness of Shri Lanka, that offered nature, culture, adventure, wildlife, and more within the confines of the country.
Mr Dileep Mudadeniya, Chairperson of Sri Lanka’s Tourism Advisory Committee, opined that the focus was shifting from general tourism to attracting high-spending and experiential travellers. He added that, while India remained Sri Lanka’s largest MICE market, efforts were underway to develop a wider range of products—including wedding, marine, wildlife, and nature-based tourism—so that visitors would spend more and enjoy a richer overall experience.
Mr Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, observed that they working towards shifting the focus from generic tourism to specialized tourism segments like MICE. He informed that Shri Lanka was near to one of the biggest MICE markets, India, and in fact India was the highest tourism revenue generating market for Shri Lanka. He also underlined the existence of high-class MICE infrastructure in Colombo. He emphasized the importance of harnessing user-generated content, and the power of content creators, travel bloggers, and influencers, for a transformative marketing approach in the coming years.
“We act as a catalyst in bringing travel agents and media to Shri Lanka for showcasing what the country has to offer,” said Mr Saminda Perera, Head of Marketing, SriLankan Airlines. He also added that Shri Lanka and Shri Lankans were truly genuine and did not need AI for beautification.
Bobby Jordan Hansen, Vice President, SLAITO, hailed Sri Lanka as a, “value for money destination.” A place that is down to earth, where you get what you want.
The evening then came alive again to music and dance as the delegates enjoyed a gala dinner that gave them an experience of the flavours and aromas of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025 – Day Two – Formal Inauguration By Prime Minister of Sri Lanka
Day Two of the Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025 saw the action shift to, Cinnamon Life, City of Dreams, Colombo. Delegates from over 30 countries converged on the Luminia Ballroom of Cinnamon Life, a huge pillar-free hall with a capacity of around 1,550, and spread over a massive 15,000 sq feet area.

The delegates were quickly seated and the air was pregnant with anticipation. The arrival of the Honourable Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, electrified the gathering.

The delegates got the opportunity to witness the traditional Ayubowan greeting ceremony, performed by beautiful dancers who welcomed the Prime Minister with graceful dance movements. They wielded the traditional Pahan Thala, a tray with a lit oil lamp and fresh flowers—symbolizing purity and goodwill. The Ayubowan ceremony is an integral part of Sri Lanka’s hospitality culture, often marking the beginning of official events, cultural performances, and formal receptions, embodying the nation’s timeless grace and spirit of welcome.
As the graceful dancers escorted the Prime Minister, the hall was imbued with a mesmerizing aura that beautifully reflected the true spirit of Sri Lankan hospitality and culture. The Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, then, inaugurated a new era in Sri Lanka’s MICE tourism by ceremoniously lighting the traditional oil lamp alongside other dignitaries.
The stage then, came alive with a scintillating dance performance in the esteemed presence of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. Traditional Kandyan dancers, adorned in vibrant, ornate costumes and silver regalia, mesmerized the audience with rhythmic footwork, dynamic spins, and synchronized formations. Accompanied by the powerful beat of drums and percussion, the performance seamlessly blended classical grace with contemporary flair, reflecting Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage. The dancers’ energy and artistry created a captivating spectacle, setting an auspicious and celebratory tone for the event, while honouring the Prime Minister and distinguished guests in true Sri Lankan tradition.

Mr Dheera Hettiarachchi, Chairman, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau welcomed the dignitaries and delegates to the 5th edition of the Sri Lanka MICE Expo, calling it an initiative to connect the World with Sri Lanka in terms of meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions.

Dr Harini Amarasuriya, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, in her address, called the event more than just an exhibition, she termed it as a celebration of opportunity, collaboration, and vision. She went on to empasize the importance of tourism as a vital economic sector of Sri Lanka, and how it serves as a catalyst for growth and positive change.

In a mesmerizing dance interpretation of Sigiriya, performers vividly narrated the story of King Kasyapa and his legendary rock fortress. Kandyan dancers depicted the king’s ambition, valour, and eventual downfall through regal movements and expressive gestures, while female dancers embodied the elegance of the Sigiriya maidens from the famed frescoes. The rhythmic beats of traditional drums heightened the drama, portraying battles, palace life, and royal ceremonies. Through intricate footwork, graceful hand gestures, and emotive expressions, the performance transformed history into a living spectacle, celebrating Sri Lanka’s rich heritage, artistry, and the timeless legend of Sigiriya in a truly captivating and evocative manner. The performance left the audience transfixed.
This spectacular, culturally rich performance created an electrifying atmosphere, perfectly setting the stage for the B2B meetings that followed. Over 100 MICE operators from 30 countries engaged directly with more than 110 Sri Lankan service providers, forging connections, exploring collaborations, and exchanging ideas. The energy and grandeur of the performance seamlessly transitioned into a dynamic business environment, inspiring dialogue and partnership while highlighting Sri Lanka’s unique blend of heritage, hospitality, and professionalism as a premier MICE destination.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in rich shades of crimson and gold, delegates made their way to the Marquee at Port City. Nestled on the seaside, the venue offered a stunning backdrop for a gala, beach-themed dinner, where the gentle sound of waves mingled with lively conversations, exquisite cuisine, and uplifting music, creating an atmosphere of celebration, elegance, and relaxed camaraderie by the edge of the Indian Ocean.
Experiencing Sri Lanka Beyond The Conference – Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025
While the Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025 was primarily a platform for high-level business engagement, it also offered delegates an immersive glimpse into the hospitality, culture, and natural beauty of the Emerald Island. Carefully curated familiarization (Fam) tours allowed participants to step beyond the confines of boardrooms and experience Sri Lanka’s rich heritage firsthand. Delegates enjoyed an orientation tour of Colombo, explored the fragrant landscapes of a Spice Garden, witnessed conservation efforts at an Elephant Rehabilitation Centre, and journeyed to iconic destinations such as Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.

In Kandy, delegates were guided to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, an iconic symbol of Sri Lanka’s spiritual heritage. Nestled beside the tranquil waters of Kandy Lake, the temple’s stunning architecture, intricate carvings, and serene ambience offered a profound glimpse into the country’s religious traditions, allowing delegates to experience firsthand the reverence, history, and cultural richness that define this revered landmark.

Near Nuwara Eliya, delegates visited the Rothschild Tea Factory, where they gained a firsthand understanding of Sri Lanka’s iconic tea-making process, from plucking the leaves to processing and packaging. Surrounded by the rolling emerald tea gardens, the experience offered not only insight into the meticulous craftsmanship behind Ceylon tea but also breathtaking panoramic views of the misty highlands, highlighting the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

In Nuwara Eliya, delegates explored the ancient and historic Seetha Amman Temple, a site deeply connected to the epic Ramayana. The temple, offers devotees and visitors a spiritual journey into Sri Lanka’s mythological past. Surrounded by serene greenery, it provided delegates a contemplative glimpse of the island’s religious traditions, cultural heritage, and enduring legends.

The delegates to Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025, also got the opportunity to experience a slice of the famed Pekoe Trail, which is a 324 kilometre long trail of 22 stages that winds through Sri Lanka’s famed tea country.
The delegates had the opportunity to visit, experience, and evaluate a diverse range of MICE venues across Colombo and other parts of Sri Lanka. In Colombo, they explored prestigious properties such as Cinnamon Lakeside, Cinnamon Grand, Cinnamon Life, ITC Ratnadipa, Shangri-La, and the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. In Kandy, they experienced the exceptional hospitality of the Golden Crown Hotel and Earl’s Regency, while in Nuwara Eliya, they toured the historic Grand Hotel and Araliya Greens. The itinerary also included a visit to the MAS Fabric Park in Thulhiriya, showcasing the island’s MICE infrastructure.
These thoughtfully designed experiences not only showcased the island’s scenic and cultural diversity but also provided delegates with a deeper appreciation of Sri Lanka’s warmth, traditions, and unparalleled charm, leaving lasting impressions that complemented the business dialogues of the Expo.
