India’s Unique Ayurveda Museum In Kerala

Incredible Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum, Thrissur, Kerala

In many ways, Kerala has been synonymous with Ayurveda. Ayurveda was believed to be introduced to the region by Parashurama, the sixth Avatar of Vishnu. It is thought that he entrusted the task of practising Ayurveda to the Ashtavidyas, so-called because they were well-versed in the “Ashta,” or eight branches of Ayurveda. The trinity of ancient Ayurveda, Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagabhata, have documented the tenets of Ayurveda in their works that include classics like Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtangasangraha.

A beautiful statue of Adi Shankaracharya greeted us near the entrance to the Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum. This was, of course, no surprise, given that Adi Shankaracharya was born in KaladyKerala, and was himself from the Namboodri Brahmin community. The Ashtavaidyas, who had been entrusted with the practice and propagation of Ayurveda by Parashurama, were also originally from the Namboodri Brahmin community.

The museum’s architecture is in itself a masterpiece, blending traditional Kerala style with modern aesthetics. As we walk through the well-curated sections, we discover the fascinating world of Ayurveda which comes alive in the form of aesthetically designed dioramas.

The museum features life-size dioramas depicting traditional treatment methods like Panchakarma, Nasyam, and Dhara. The audio-visual presentations provide an immersive experience, that helps visitors understand the science behind these therapies.
