Sacred 12 Jyotirlingas And The Shiva Purana
The Shiva Purana is an ancient text which gives information about Shiva, Shiva symbology, and Shiva legends. It also talks about the twelve Jyotirlingas or the Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Temples in India.
The 12 Jyotirlingas are mentioned in Section 3 – Śatarudra-saṃhitā, of the Shiva Purana. The twelve Jyotirlingas are associated with 12 incarnations of Shiva and they are symbolic manifestations of the Lord on earth.
The Shiva Purana mentions:
“The jyotirliṅgas are—Somanātha in the Saurāṣṭra territory; Mallikārjuna on the mountain Śrīśaila; Mahākāla in Ujjayinī; Amareśvara in Oṃkāra Māndhatā; Kedāra on the Himalaya; Bhīmaśaṅkara in the city of Dākinī; Viśveśvara in the city of Vārāṇasī; Tryambaka on the banks of Gautamī; Vaidyanātha in the cremation ground; Nāgeśa in the forest of Dārukā; Rāmeśvara in the Setubandha Ghuśmeśvara in the Śiva temple.”
The Shiva Purana goes on to mention the circumstances under which Lord Shiva, himself, chose to stay on earth in the form of a Jyotirlinga in these 12 sacred places, and the importance of the 12 Jyotirling, as under:
Somnath Jyotirlinga in Saurashtra, Gujarat
“The the first one, Somanātha, annihilated the distress of the moon. O sage, by worshipping, it dispels the ailments of consumption, leprosy etc.”
“This incarnation of Śiva, Someśa, is stationed in the auspicious land of Saurāṣṭra, in the form of a Linga. It was worshipped by the moon formerly.”
“On seeing Someśvara, the great Linga of Śīva, people are freed from sin. They attain worldly pleasures and salvation.”
Srisailam Jyotirlinga in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh
“The second incarnation of Śiva Mallikārjuna, on the mountain, Śrīśaila, is the bestower of the desires of devotees.”
“Śiva went there from his mountain, with great pleasure in order to see his son Kārttikeya. It is stationed there in the form of the Linga.”
“It, is very pleasing. By seeing and worshipping it one derives salvation hereafter. There is no doubt in this.”
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
“Śiva incarnated himself as Mahākāla in the city of Ujjayinī for the protection of his devotees.”
“The demon Dūṣaṇa, a resident of Ratnamāla, was a defiler of Vedic rites, a hater of brahmins and destroyer of everyone. When he reached Ujjayinī, the lord was meditated upon by the sons of the Vedic brahmins. He reduced the demon to ashes by a mere Huṃkāra.”
“After killing him, on being requested by the gods; lord Mahākāla stayed there in the form of a Jyotirliṅga. He continues to protect his devotees.”
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh
“The fourth incarnation of Śiva the supreme soul, the great lord in Oṃkāra Māndhātā is a bestower of the desires of his devotees.”
“Lord Śiva manifested himself from his earthen Linga devoutly installed by Brahmā and he fulfilled the desires of the mountain.”
“On being requested by the gods the lord in the form of the Linga stayed there two-fold, bestowing worldly pleasures and salvation and being favourably disposed towards his devotees.”
Kedarnath Jyotirlinga in Kedarnath, Uttarakhand
“The fifth great incarnation of Śiva is the Kedāreśā. He is stationed in Kedāra in the form of Jyotirliṅga.”
“It was at the request of the twofold incarnations of Viṣṇu, named Nara and Nārāyaṇa that Śiva stayed in Kedāra on the mountain Himavat.”

“The seventh incarnation as Viśveśvara at Kāśī is in the form of the entire cosmic egg. It yields worldly pleasures and salvation.”

“The lord in the name of Vaidyanātha became famous in the three worlds. Seeing and worshipping him with devotion yields worldly pleasures and salvation.”

“The incarnation of Nāgeśvara is glorified as the tenth one. The Lord manifested himself as the chastiser of the wicked for his devotees.”
“He killed the Rākṣasa Dāruka, a violator of virtue. He saved his devotee Supriya who was a merchant king.”

Rameshwara Jyotirlinga in Tamil Nadu
“This incarnation of Śiva is the eleventh one. It was pleasing to Rāma and it was installed by him.”
“Worshipped by Rāma, Śiva who is favourably disposed towards his devotees manifested himself in the Shivling and granted the boon of victory to Rāma.”

“The incarnation of Śiva as Ghuśmeśvara is the twelfth wherein the lord indulged in different sports and conferred bliss on Ghuśmā. He is favourably disposed towards his devotees.”
“The Lord manifested Himself in a lake near the Devaśaila in the southern quarter acting favourably to Ghuśmā.”

It may be noted that though many of the sacred 12 Jyotirlings can be easily identified through the Shiva Purana, the description of a few of them are ambiguous and open to interpretation. This has led to some amount of disagreement and divergent opinions.

Legend of The Jyotirlingas
There is a fascinating story about the genesis of Jyotirlingas which involves the trinity of the Hindu pantheon, namely Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Once Brahma and Vishnu were debating about their supremacy when Shiva arrived. He wanted to settle the dispute and so he assumed the form of an infinite beam of light that straddled the three worlds. He then asked Brahma and Vishnu to travel along this beam in opposite directions and find the ends.
Both the Gods could not find the end of the beam of light as it extended to infinity. Lord Vishnu returned back and accepted the fact that he could not find the end. However, Lord Brahma lied, that he had found the end. Lord Shiva was angry seeing Brahma lying and cursed him saying that there would be no worship of him on earth. Lord Vishnu however would be worshipped as an equal to Lord Shiva. The places where the light of the infinite beam of light fell on earth became hallowed places, and the sacred 12 Jyotirlings are among these hallowed places.

I have been to Trambakeshwar Jyotirlinga. But I am yet to visit the other places. I have heard the story of Aravana’s Atma Linga.

What an amazing post about the twelve Jyotirlingas! I have visited one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (Omkareshwar in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh) and can’t wait to visit the rest.
I went to Kedarnath when I was very small and suffered from pleural edema because of the altitude. So although I loved the beautiful temple, those thoughts come flashing back. Also Varanasi is my sasural, and also the land of Lord Shiva. So o can relate with your post very nicely.
Out of these 12 jyotilings, I have been Somanth and kedarnath. Others are yet to be explored. Thank you for sharing this information it works as a guide and shows the importance of every joytirling.
I had goosebumps whole I was reading it. However, I have visited 8 jyotirlingas temples. 4 more to go but don’t know when.
Of these 12, I’ve visited only one. Tramakeshwar in Nasik. It’s such a beautiful temple. Other wise I have done the Amarnath Yatra and also plan to do Mansarovar but some time in the future.
Jyotirlinga temples have their own charm and importance. I have visited a very few and loved them. This list calls out for more to visit to.
All the Jyotirlings have so many stories but all reinforces the point that God is always there for his devotees. I have had the chance to visit only 1-2 Jyotirlings in my life, I hope and pray I get to visit all.

I have visited Ujjain city and the jyotirlinga temple there but haven’t got a chance to visit Omkareshwar temple in my own state. As for visiting Kedarnath I have a dreaded story that happened to me. Amazing compilation of all 12 jyotirlinga.
