Mulki Surfing – Why Surfing In Mulki Is Famous

Mulki Surfing - Why Surfing In Mulki Is Famous

Mulki is a small coastal town located about 30 km north of Mangaluru in Karnataka. Once known mainly as a pilgrimage stop for devotees visiting the Sri Durga Parameshwari Temple, Mulki has, over the years, evolved into one of India’s most promising surfing destinations.

What sets Mulki apart is its consistent beach breaks, sandy seabed, and relatively forgiving waves. These factors make it ideal for beginners, while still offering enough variety for intermediate surfers to sharpen their skills.

One of the biggest reasons Mulki stands out is its beginner-friendly surf conditions. If we are new to surfing or trying it for the first time, Mulki feels welcoming rather than intimidating. The waves in Mulki are generally soft and rolling, especially during the early morning hours. This consistency allows learners to practice balance, paddling, and pop-ups without battling aggressive swells. Unlike rocky reef breaks, Mulki’s sandy seabed makes wipeouts far less scary. This natural advantage builds confidence and encourages learners to try again—even after a fall.

While there are a few surfing clubs in Mulki that offer lessons for beginners, the pioneering name that stands out is the Mantra Surf Club. Surfing as an adventure, has always fascinated us—the sight of men and women riding the waves, moving in harmony with the sea, is truly captivating. So, when we found ourselves in Udupi, we simply couldn’t resist the temptation to head to Mulki and try our hand at surfing for ourselves.

Thus it was that, in the late afternoon, we found ourselves driving towards Mulki from our hotel, the Sai Radha Heritage Beach Resort near Kaup Beach. As we travelled along the Udupi–Mangaluru road, the famed Durga Parameshwari Temple passed by on our left. Soon after, we turned right, leaving the main highway behind and entering a network of narrow lanes—roads gently flanked by swaying coconut palms—that eventually led us to the Mantra Surf Club.Top of Form.

Beginner Surf Course

Mantra Surf Club offers a range of well-structured surfing courses designed for all skill levels, from complete beginners to intermediate riders. Their Beginner Surf Course focuses on ocean safety, wave theory, board handling, and basic riding techniques, ensuring a safe and confidence-building introduction to surfing. For those looking to progress, the Intermediate Sessions refine paddling skills, wave selection, and turning techniques under experienced instructors. Mantra Surf Club has courses that range from 3 days to 30 days, they also have options for residential courses.

Boat from the Mantra Surf Club campus

We had chosen an introductory session, a brief engagement lasting just a couple of hours. Along with a small group of fellow surfers, we boarded a boat from the Mantra Surf Club campus and, after a brief 15 minute ride, disembarked on a quiet stretch of sandy shore. From there, we walked for nearly a kilometre to the spot where the boards were stored. Balancing our boards on our heads, we made our way towards the inviting expanse of Mulki Beach, where the sand, the sea, and our long-anticipated surfing lesson awaited us.

Before entering the water, we were thoroughly briefed on the fundamentals of surfing. The session covered essential techniques such as mounting the surfboard, paddling efficiently, and smoothly standing up on the board. We were also guided on the correct posture to adopt—how to position our feet, distribute our weight, and maintain balance while riding a wave. In addition, the instructors explained basic ocean safety, wave timing, and how to fall safely, ensuring that we entered the sea feeling prepared, confident, and aware of both technique and surroundings.

Soon enough, we were in the water, playfully engaging with the waves—clinging to our boards, attempting to mount them, tumbling off, and clambering back again with renewed determination. Time seemed to dissolve between falls and fleeting successes, until at last we managed to hold our stance, standing upright and gliding across the waves for a few precious seconds. The experience was nothing short of exhilarating. As we rode the swell, the sun slowly dipped behind us into the waters of the Arabian Sea, bathing the horizon in deep crimson and gold, and lending the moment a quiet, almost magical grandeur that lingered long after we left the water.

As twilight gently yielded to darkness, we sat quietly in the boat that carried us back to the Mantra Surf Club campus, lost in reflection over the remarkable experience we had just lived. The rhythm of the water and the cool evening air seemed to deepen our sense of contentment. It was the kind of experience that settles into memory with ease, lingering long after the moment has passed. Even as the shoreline receded, we found ourselves silently resolving to return—on another day, for a longer, more immersive surfing experience in Mulki.
