About Gokarna
The small seaside town of Gokarna goes back a long, long time in history. It was initially a village inhabited by simple people who lived by the sea with fishing as their main occupation.
Sometime in the 15th century, a group of Brahmins fled from the region called Gomantak, present-day Goa, and settled in this land by the sea. Gokarna’s claim to fame, however, goes way back in time straight into the realms of mythology.
Myth has it that once Lord Shiva gifted his Atma Linga to Ravana pleased with his penance. The demon king was taking the Atma Linga to his home in Sri Lanka and would have attained great powers. The Gods wanted to prevent this and sent Lord Ganesh in the form of a small boy to stop Ravana. Lord Ganesh tricked Ravana to place the Atma Linga on the ground, after which he was not able to lift or move the Linga. That spot is today the Mahabaleshwar temple in Gokarna where the Atma Linga of Shiva is worshipped by the millions of pilgrims that descend on the temple town.
In later years Gokarna attracted hordes of hippies who came their drawn by the serene beaches. They brought with them their music and art which is visible in the street art of the town. Today Gokarna is a town with multiple identities. On the one hand, it is a place of pilgrimage and on the other, it is a trekking paradise as well as a place for quiet relaxation and rejuvenation. One can also find many foreigners in Gokarna beach.

Experiencing The Beach Trek In Gokarna
The first light of the morning was just piercing the darkness of the night when we made our way through the small alleys of Gokarna towards the beach. We were starting off early morning for our exploration of the beautiful beaches of Gokarna.
Colorful images stared down at us from the wall of some houses. The street art of Gokarna looked more enigmatic in the semi-darkness. As we were staying in Gokarna town near the vicinity of the famous Mahabaleshwara temple we started our trek from the Gokarna beach Karnataka.
As it was quite early we did not find anyone to seek directions and relied on the GPS app in our mobile to guide us to Om Beach which was our first beach of call on the trek. Our Airtel 4G connection assured that we were connected to the world even as we embarked on our Gokarna beach trek.
The best part of the Gokarna beach trek is you get to see the best beaches strung together in an exhilarating array separated by rocky hills. Gokarna beach can be accessed on level ground and is not far from the famous temple of Mahabaleshwara. To reach the other beaches you need to descend down.
A small road dotted with temples that hug the Arabian Sea can be used to reach Om beach from Gokarna beach India. There is a road till one of the temples where Ram and Lakshman are believed to have meditated and from there one needs to take an ascending path towards Om beach.
There is another narrow road a little farther from the coast which can be reached through a narrow bylane on the left of the Car street of Gokarna town. we walked along this road which was completely deserted. There were a few scattered houses and farm stays along the road. It takes about half an hour to reach the Kudle beach.
The road actually continues on towards Om beach. However, to get to Kudle beach one needs to take a descending path that leads to the beach. It is interesting to note that there is a temple here and a board says that this is the birthplace of Hanuman.
“Kudle beach 3 minutes, 300 meters; Om beach 30 minutes, 3 kilometers”, informs a signboard as we descend the mud track leading towards Kudle beach.
We walk along this path and emerge straight onto Kudle beach. It is early morning and the sand looks blemishless, like a glass-topped table.
There is virtually no one on the beach, just a solitary egret playing with the waves, a lone couple out to admire the early morning sea.
It is just us, the sand, the rocks, and the waters of the Arabian sea kissing our feet. We take pictures from our phone and also share the beauty of the moment with some close friends thanks to the Airtel 4G connection which is our trusted and faithful ally in all our travels.
After spending some time enthralled by the captivating beauty of the moment we make our way across the beach to follow another ascending narrow path towards Om beach which is about 3 kilometers away. We walk along the rocky path with the sea following faithfully down below towards our right. the views of the sea are breathtaking and keep us hypnotized.
An invigorating walk of about 35-40 minutes and we are in sight of the Om beach, the best beach in Gokarna according to us. The beach beckons with its mystical form, which is that of the ancient Sanskrit Hindu symbol Om or Aum which is a visual representation of the primordial sound of the universe.
We spent some time taking a dip in the gentle waves that lap languidly on the Om beach and relaxing amidst the rocks before continuing onwards towards the next beach on our Gokarna beach trek, the Half Moon beach, but not before fortifying ourselves with some nice breakfast.
At one end of the Om beach, a narrow path leads upwards and towards the Half-Moon beach. It is an ascending pathway across rocky terrain on a mud path. We keep climbing and pause to turn back to look at some breathtaking views of the Om beach that lies snuggled with the Arabian sea down below. About 30 minutes later you reach the Half-Moon beach which is again named after the shape hewn by the waters of the Arabian Sea on the sand. It is a small beach with some shacks where one can get refreshed.
Another walk across boulders and foliage which takes about 15-20 minutes takes you to Paradise beach which is the final beach on our Gokarna beach trek. Many opt to start the Gokarna beach trekking from Paradise beach or Half-Moon beach. Paradise beach itself is a nice beach, a little bigger than the Half-Moon beach. There is an option of taking a boat from Om beach to Half-Moon beach or Paradise beach on the one side and to Kudle beach or even Gokarna beach on the other side. One can always do a trek one way and take a boat back. The other option is to trek back to Om beach and then take an autorickshaw from there.
