1. Gandhi Smriti
“Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.” These were the words that the great scientist Albert Einstein used to describe Mahatma Gandhi, who is revered as the “Father of the Nation”, by India.
Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, and spent a considerable part of his life including early childhood in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar, but crucial years were spent in Delhi.
So it is indeed befitting to start one’s’ Delhi experience by visiting Gandhi Smriti which is a museum dedicated to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi Smriti was formerly known as Birla House and was the residence of the famous industrialist family, the Birlas. This is the place where the Mahatma spent his last days before falling to an assassin’s bullets.
The Museum houses various artifacts associated with the life and death of Mahatma Gandhi. The Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum is also housed in the same premises. The exact spot where the Mahatma was assassinated on the grounds of the then Birla House on his way to his evening prayers is marked by a memorial known as, The Martyrs Column.
The structure stands poignantly over a spot where time itself must have stood still on that fateful day January 30, 1948, barely 5 months after India attained its independence. Gandhi Smriti is definitely one of the must-see places in Delhi.
2. Raj Ghat
On the banks of the Yamuna river, in secluded and peaceful surroundings is a simple square platform crafted in black marble and decorated with floral designs. This memorial marks the place where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated after his death.
A few minutes spent in silence remembering the values of Truth and Non-Violence that the man stood and died for is going to remain etched in one’s psyche for posterity. 3. India Gate
A massive archway that soars to a height of 42 meters, the India Gate is a war memorial that was designed by the architect who is also credited with the design of New Delhi, Edwin Lutyens. Architecturally India Gate has been compared to the Arc De Triomphe in Paris as well as the Arch of Constantine which is situated between the Colosseum and Palatine Hill in Rome.
India Gate was constructed as a tribute in stone to the over 80,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who sacrificed their lives in the First World War. The names of 13,300 soldiers including many British are inscribed on the walls of India Gate. A smaller structure to honor the soldiers who died during the Pakistan war of 1971 was later constructed. This is known as Amar Jawan Jyoti or Flame of the Immortal Soldier.
Lush green lawns surround India Gate which is brilliantly illuminated as the sun sets on the western horizon. During the summers the lawns are a popular spot for families to spend their evenings. Definitely one of the must see places in Delhi.
4. Qutub Minar
The Qutub Minar is a landmark of Delhi, not only because of its impressive height and dimensions but also because of its intriguing history. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the must see places in Delhi. The Qutub Minar is a 5-storey tower built of red sandstone and marble, each storey has a balcony and the structure tapers off towards the top.
The Qutub Minar towers to a height of 240 feet and has a width of 47 feet at the base which tapers off to 8 feet at the top. The construction of the Qutub Minar was initiated by Qutb-Ud-Din-Aibak and later completed by his successor Iltumish. Why the Qutub Minar was built has been ascribed to different purposes that include it being a victory memorial.
Some versions say that it was a tower for the Muezzin to call the faithful to prayer. Near the Qutub Minar is situated what is supposed to be one of the oldest mosques in India. The lawns and ruins of ancient structures around the Qutub Minar lend it an intriguing charm and make it one of the top attractions in Delhi.
5. Red Fort
The Red Fort is another monument that has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is one of the historical places in Delhi. The Red Fort, which literally translates into Lal Quila in Hindi was the epicenter of power during the Mughal rule in India. The Red Fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the year 1639.
The massive red sandstone walls of the fort once enclosed the residences of the Mughal royalty and were the center of events that influenced the region. Today various museums and a Mughal-styled garden are housed within the precincts of the Red Fort. Historically the Red Fort is an icon of sorts of India, this is where the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was put on trial by the British.
In modern times, on the 15th of August, which marks India’s Independence Day, the Prime Minister addresses the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort. The importance of Red Fort cannot be underlined and it is no doubt one of the must see places in Delhi.
6. Humayun’s Tomb
Humayun’s Tomb is another UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in Delhi. It is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun that was commissioned to be built by his first wife Empress Bega Begum and was completed between 1569-70.
Besides the tomb of Humayun, the monument also houses the tombs of various Mughal Emperors and the Empress Baga Begum herself. The monument is embellished by beautifully landscaped Persian-style gardens. The beauty of this Mughal structure assumes an ethereal glow against the setting sun. 7. Purana Quila
Delhi is known for being the site of seven cities that span time in history. One of the cities referred to in mythology is the glittering city of Indraprastha which is mentioned in the great Indian Epic, Mahabharata. Indraprastha was the capital city of the Pandavas.
Purana Quila is thought to have been built on the site where once stood the magnificent Indraprastha. Purana Quila which literally translates to, “Old Fort”, was built by Sher Shah Suri sometime around the year 1545. Today the ruins of the old fort stand in silent grandeur amidst lush green foliage.

8. Jama Masjid
Jama Masjid is one of the largest mosques in India. Its courtyard can accommodate more than 25,000 people. The mosque is built with red sandstone and white marble and is a pleasing architectural marvel. The Jantar Mantar in Delhi which roughly can be interpreted as to mean Calculation Instrument is one among 5 similar structures constructed by Maharajah Jai Singh II of Jaipur during the period between 1724 and 1735. The other Jantar Mantars can be found in Jaipur, Varanasi, Mathura, and Ujjain.

The grand structure was again designed by the architect duo of Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker and construction was completed in the year 1929. The Rashtrapati Bhavan consists of a huge mansion of 340 rooms that house the residence of the president, offices, and guest rooms. Visiting heads of state are housed in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Doll Museum would be first on my list of must see places in Delhi. The Red Fort and the India Gate look like interesting places to visit. There’s so much to see and do!
This is such an exhaustive list of places in Delhi. I have been to Delhi so many times but some how missed visiting most of these places. Though I have visited few but there is lot left. Thanks for sharing and this reminder.
India has so many UNESCO World heritage Sites and those are on top of my bucket list. You’ve featured a few of them here, which is great to know there are plenty to see while in Delhi! I would love to visit and see the India Gate too. That looks so amazingly impressive as far as architecture is concerned!
I was trying to figure out my favourites… but gosh everytime I thought “THIS ONE!”, I would scroll down only to dins more amazing things!! So I think in the end my favourites were n 7 and 21… but honestly all of them seemed great, I am especially into ancient ruins and traditional architecture.

I have never thought about travel to Delhi but looking this post makes want to take my family there now!!
Delhi has some really iconic landmarks, some significant reminders of the glorious past of India, and others of the freedom struggle that the country went through. Then there are the museums and other places. I remember visiting many of these as a child with my parents. Your post brought back the fond memories from the past.

Delhi is such an amazing city rich in history and culture. I have never been there yet, though it’s on my bucket list. I have heard of most of these places, but I had no idea about the International doll museum and the garden of five senses. Also the Kingdom of Dreams sounds like an exciting place and I would love to visit soon!
There is so much beautiful architecture to see in Delhi! I want to visit it all! Also Dilli Haat looks right up my alley!

The first in my list would be the Gandhi Smitri and its memorial park. Gandhi is considered as one of the big persons of the 20th century and his life had influenced a lot of people and his values and principles echoed up to this day. I think it’s important to pay a visit before going to other places and it’s good that he is the number one on this list. I will surely recommend this article to my friends who plans to visit New Delhi someday.
India has so many UNESCO World heritage Sites. This temple looks so interesting. I wish I could visit actually. Might have to add to my list actually. I would love to visit and see Ghandi Simitri Memorial Park.

A brilliant blog post on Delhi. You have covered the destinations that I couldn’t cover in my blog post too! I wish Delhi would have become the first UNESCO World Heritage city of India. I was part of the team that prepared the draft for the same. Alas, it was put on the back burner!

I loved Humayuns tomb. It is so romantic and peaceful even though there are large crowds. Dilli Haat is however my favourite place in the whole of Delhi. What a great place to snap up some bargains and a lovely lady I met a yoga retreat lives close by too.
I cant believe I only had the India Gate on my list! I am definitely adding a few of these places including Akshardham and Humayun’s Tomb
My husband and I visited India last year but never made it to India. We hope to return in the next couple of years so will save this great post for reference when we do! It really makes me want to visit Delhi!
So much to do in Delhi! The Qutub Minar looks particularily interesting, a very intriguing history, as does the Red Fort. I love UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so that’s pobrably why I was drawn to these two! So many beautiful mosques, temples and museums to visit too though – impressed with the diverse range of options!
Your post took me right back to when I was in New Delhi working and on my days off would go exploring. I wish back then that I had a post like this for tips and information, it would have been so helpful. I never made it to ISKCON Temple or Akshardham but they are definitely on my list for next time as I love temples and history.

I have made a mental note of visiting the Heritage Railway Centre. It is so strange that desppite living in Delhi for more than 17 years, I haven’t visited this charming place.
The title itself of each place here seems very inviting and entertaining, especially for kids. India must be a huge place that you can find interesting things to do whether alone or with family!
This is a neatly compiled list of places in Delhi guys. The Doll Museum and Humayun’s Tomb are probably the only places I’m yet to visit in Delhi. Appreciate the effort. Cheers.
This post made me realize how little I know of Delhi. I think 90% of the places listed here, I didn’t know until now. Your country is so rich in culture I am almost envious. You see, my country is very westernized that it’s sad really. That’s why I like going to abroad because I get a sense of another country’s identity and culture even when I don’t go far off the city. Hoping I’d be able to visit these places in the near future.
The National Science Center sounds so interesting especially when you mentioned something about the water. I was trying to envision your description and now I want to see it! I also have never heard of The Red Fort and it’s so red! Hahaha, it’s obvious where the name came from 🙂
Usually, when I visit a place, I’m always interested in old, traditional architecture. In these case, the Indian forts would be on top of my list. But that World of Wonders with so much water seems incredible. I’ve just read a book about India and the writer was saying how much poverty he saw in Kashmir, one of the northern states of India. I wouldn’t have imagined that I can find a ‘water paradise’ in India, but it seems that I’ll have to visit it in person and change my limiting beliefs about it.
This is quite the list! I hope that I can check these off myself when we get to India this coming March. The only one that I wouldn’t want to visit it world of wonder, just because waterparks aren’t my thing. The Garden of Five Senses looks pretty amazing! I love those little elephant statues.
What a great list! This brought me back to my time in Delhi. I thought the India Gate was so understated, seriously loved it! But the Red Fort was more impressive on the outside than it was on the inside. I had no idea that Humayun’s Tomb inspired the Taj Mahal! I wish I had known about the Kingdom of Dreams sooner!
Seems to me like not a lot of people take the time to explore Delhi. Wow, but there is so much to do! I will spend a couple of days in the city for sure! #feetdotravel
I live in Delhi so often lose perspective. You made me see my city with fresh eyes. I have still not seen garden of 5 senses. This and Gandhi Smriti are the only 2 places from the list which I have not seen. The next time my parents are in Delhi, I will take them to the places listed by you.
Delhi has some wondeful looking buildings. Some of them are so surprising! That train looks like ones we have in the UK, and the ones in Thailand. And those dolls look quite Russian. Thanks for introducing us to more of Delhi.
I didn’t get a chance to visit Delhi when I was in India, but I can see I missed out! The tombs are stunning! You almost forget what they are when you look at them. And I love the old calculation and astronomy instruments they used to use (thankfully we have calculators on our phones now:)
Lovely post. I would enjoy just wandering around Dilli Haat and seeing what treasures I find. There is just so much history and architecture in Delhi.

This is an awesome post! We went to Delhi but only saw a handful of these gems – I’m so disappointed! We found the shopping to be the best ever there so we kind of got caught up in that. I’ll have to bookmark this for our next trip!

when we were in Delhi in January, we loved exploring the Qutub Minar, Parliament and the Red Fort. I wish we had had more time because Darcy would have loved to see the Train Museum and I personally would have the Gandhi Smriti Museum along with humayun’s tomb. guess it just gives me another reason to come back

I’ve never been in Delhi because I dread that I can’t cope to see the huge gap between rich and poor in India. Spiritually and culturally India has so much to offer as also its beautiful architecture. You wrote a great post.

My next stop in India will be Ladakh with a 1-2 days stopover, I guess, in Delhi. I took note of some places I would like in the city, like the red fort or the national rail museum. I never imagined that Delhi had so many interesting things to see!
Delhi is so large, and of course offers plenty to do. When we were there, for a couple of days, we didn’t get to see nearly everything on your list. I stuck to the World Heritage Sites. I’ve got to go back.
Wow! I went to Delhi when I was 17 and I didn’t particularly like it (probably because it was my first culture shock)! I wish I knew about some of these things – especially the rail museum as the Indian railway system is so impressive!

I visited most of these places way back in my childhood. This refreshed so many memories! Doll museum and Appu Ghar were fun. About time I take my kids there too.
I have been all the places except Jama Masjid, bal bhawan, and Jantar Mantar. You have well presented all the flavors of Delhi.
I am fortunate to have visited almost all these places in my life. Delhi is a beautiful place with multi-language people and harmony of different cultures. You have got the city’s spirit so well.

We have visited Delhi when I was quite young and have a decent memory of a few of these places, We are soon planning a visit to Delhi along with family so will definitely check out these places. I am sure many of these locations would be loved by kids.
I have visited most of these monuments in Delhi. They are so pretty and give once a glance of the majestic Mughal rule here. Though it saddens me how because of politics the road names are being changed to remove history.
