Road Trips in NSW Area – Grand Pacific Drive

140 kilometers of the stunning Australian coastline, what could be better? The scenic Grand Pacific Drive commences at the Royal National Park in south Sydney and meanders down the coast towards the friendly coastal city of Wollongong, finishing in the sleepy seaside of Kiama.

The road is made up of a series of hanging bridges hugging the rugged headlands of the colorful coastal escarpments, falling into the ever-blue waters. Emerge from the lush green forests of the stunning Royal National Park and be greeted gloriously by the absolutely sublime never-ending oceanic horizons of the Pacific Ocean. Then sit back and relax as the cliffs keep on coming and the water continues to follow.

Along the way, be sure to stop in at one of the many swimming spots, including those in the Royal National Park like Wattamolla and Garie Beach. Eat a wholesome lunch at one of the organic, local cafes of Austinmer, then onto the Budderoo National Park’s Minnamurra Falls. If you get the tickle for adventure along the way, there’s the opportunity to go horse riding, parachuting or hang-gliding at the historic Bald Hill, in Stanwell Tops.

This coastal drive hits a climax once you reach the famous Sea Cliff Bridge. This amazing man-made suspension bridge road twists and turns as it spans over the water’s edge, delighting you with panoramic views from Coalcliff to Clifton.

Road Trips in NSW Area – Darling River Run

The famous Darling River is Australia’s longest river spanning the red dirt of Outback NSW. The 730-kilometer journey begins in black opal country, Lightning Ridge and heads down to Wentworth, before meeting up with the South’s Murray River.

This adventure takes you back to the pioneering days, and voyages through the outback’s progression into the modern day. Immerse yourself in Australia’s country outback heritage, steeped in rich Indigenous culture and gain an insight into living off the land.

Stop in at Brewarrina to witness the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal fish traps, used to harness dinner in the Darling’s turbulent currents. Then venture to the epitome of outback Australia, the township of Bourke – a true desert oasis. Be sure to witness a sunrise over the rolling red hills, and enjoy a meal at Henry Lawson’s local, the Carriers Arms Hotel for some of that laid back country hospitality.

Then take to the breathtaking Wilcannia to Bourke Road, and toddle down to Tilpa. The quaint country town with a rich agricultural heritage, and a bloody good pub. From here, meander down to Broken Hill, past the White Cliffs – the origins of Australia’s opal mining boom back in the 1800’s. Then onto Australia’s most renowned mining town. The stunning red sandhills of Broken Hill will have you in awe of outback NSW.

From sandhills to lakes, head down to the Menindee Lakes Region to witness the Darling’s first European settlement. The lakes are ephemeral depending on rainfall, but some of the most captivating sunsets are often caught here amongst the abundance of birdlife.

Finish your journey at the Mungo National Park, just outside of Wentworth. This river town was once the busiest port in Australia transporting wool and other goods between NSW and Victoria, now Wentworth is home to the Murray Darling Junction. Mungo National Park has a rich Indigenous heritage, with the oldest known cremations and remains found within Mungo Lake sediments. Check out the arid landscapes of sweeping white cliffs in the Mungo National Park and inspect the iconic Walls of China.

  1. All three sound amazing! I haven’t yet visited Australia. But I would love to do all of these trips when I do go! The stunning landscapes and prospect of seeing wildlife have me hooked!

  2. Renting a car in this region – or Oz for that matter – seems the way to go, guys. We are seeing how renting or having cars handy via house sits here in NZ is your only viable option too. Gotta have your wheels LOL.

  3. I can’t imagine what can be better than a road trip that would span through both dense forests and mesmerizing coastal areas. And as you said, NSW road trips are just that. They are high on our bucket list. Thanks for putting in the details , including how to book the best deals on hotels. This is going to be very useful

  4. When I think of road trips in Australia, the Great Ocean Road immediately comes to mind having gained international recognition with the Twelve Apostles and other sights. Nice to see that there are other epic road trip options available near Sydney – I’d love to try them out as well.

  5. I had no idea that there were places where it snowed, or even Ski resorts in Australia. I stand corrected after reading your post. Kosciuszko Alpine Way sounds like something I would tremendously enjoy.
