Bomdila Itinerary - Things To Do In Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh

Bomdila is one of the best-kept secrets of Arunachal Pradesh as we discovered during our 1-day Bomdila itinerary on our North East sojourn with Holiday Scout. It is a picturesque town perched on the Eastern ranges of the Himalayas and relatively untouched by tourist footfalls.

The more we travel across India, the more we learn about our incredible country and how much more there is to see and learn. On our Arunachal Pradesh sojourn, we saw places that we never knew existed, places that seemed to be beyond the frontiers of our imagination. Among them was Bomdila, which surprised us with its simple and old-world charm and innocence that seemed to be caught in a time warp.

Bomdila Itinerary - Things To Do In Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh

Most travellers look at Bomdila more as a pitstop on their way to Tawang and further east to Bum La Pass. However, during our visit, we found that Bomdila is a standalone destination by itself and one can spend a couple of days soaking in the vibes of this mountain town.

There are enough places to see in Bomdila and things to do in Bomdila to keep you occupied for at least a couple of days. The idyllic charm of the town also makes for an enchanting honeymoon destination. Even if you are travelling further into Arunachal Pradesh, you can easily fit in either a 1 Day Bomdila itinerary, or 2 Day Bomdila itinerary, if not more.

Welcome To Bomdila,” were the words that greeted us as we entered the town of Bomdila. The words were written on an ornate arch that spanned the road that lead to Bomdila town. After reaching Guwahati by air, we travelled to Nameri on the border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh where we stayed overnight. We were now in Bomdila after visiting the Tipi Orchid Centre and the Sessa Waterfall on the way. We looked forward to exploring the treasures of Bomdila, the next day.

The park has beautiful walking paths with prayer wheels. Morning dew glistens from the grass and colourful flowers wave in the breeze as if competing with colourful prayer flags that flutter in the breeze. There is a beautiful statue of Buddha and one of the walls of the park is painted with scenes from Buddha’s life.

A giant prayer wheel is located at one corner of the Park. The Buddha Park is a serene place to start your day with.

After treating yourself to the panoramic views of the town of Bomdila from the Bomdila Viewpoint, you can head still further up, literally into the clouds, to the Bomdila War Memorial. The Bomdila War Memorial stands at an altitude of 9,498 feet, in the RR Hills, and is the highest point of Bomdila.

Bomdila War Memorial

When we visited the Bomdila War Memorial, it was enveloped in mist and was quite cold. The War Memorial is located within the Army zone and needs special permission to visit. The Bomdila War Memorial is built in memory of Subedar Pritam Singh and his men who were martyred here during the Indo-China war of 1962.

A granite plaque reads, “Bomdila Battle Memorial, Dedicated to the Martyrs of 1 Sikh Li.” Another granite plaque has the names of 31 martyrs including Subedar Pritam Singh, engraved on it. The Bomdila War Memorial is a very poignant place to visit in Bomdila.

Bomdila War Memorial is also the highest viewpoint of Bomdila and hence is known as Bomdila War Memorial and Bomdila View Point, Arunachal Pradesh. Opposite the memorial is a viewpoint from where you can see the many peaks of the Eastern Himalayas including Gorichen and Kangto.  Kangto is the highest peak in Arunachal Pradesh. Kangto towers to a height of 7,090 metres (23,261 ft).

The Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Ling Monastery referred to as simply GRL Monastery or Upper Gompa or Bomdila Monastery is one of the most important places to visit in Bomdila. The GRL monastery stands atop a lofty elevation overlooking the Himalayan valleys and the town of Bomdila.

It is a massive complex that includes a central temple to Buddha with a prayer hall, a temple to the Protectors, a Tibetan Herbal Hospital (Men-Tsee-Khang), a school for young monks, living quarters of the monks, a community kitchen, and the Butter Lamps room. Opposite the main temple is a huge circular stage that erupts into life during the 3-Day annual festival of Torgya in which the famous Cham dance is performed by the monks.

The GRL Monastery was built in the early 1960s by the late Tsona Gontse Rinpoche, popularly known as TG Rinpoche. The GRL Monastery is one of the top attractions in Bomdila.

Lower Gompa – Thubchog Gatsel Ling Monastery

A small but beautiful monastery, known as the Lower Gompa and also a part of the GRL Monastery stands right in the centre of Bomdila near the Bomdila market. The entrance to the Lower Gompa is ornamented with a flat arch that looks colourful and vibrant with Buddhist iconography and stands right in the midst of shops.

On top of the arch is the ubiquitous Buddhist symbol of two deer flanking the Dharma Chakra. This symbol can be seen in Buddhist monasteries and temples everywhere. The symbol is reminiscent of the Deer park in Sarnath near Varanasi, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya.

Beyond the entrance, you come across the prayer wheels. A small verandah has paintings of the protectors on either side and leads to the inner sanctum.

Inside the inner sanctum can be seen statues of Sakyamuni Buddha, Je Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug or Yellow Hat sect of Buddhism, Guru Padmasambhava, founder of the Nyingma sect of Buddhism, and others.

If the sun rises early in Arunachal Pradesh, it also sets early. You can spend the evening chilling with a hot cup of steaming coffee at one of the new-age cafes of Bomdila, which we have mentioned below.
