World-Class Workouts: Top Luxury Wellness Resorts to Add to Your Bucket List

Tourists go to certain destinations for a variety of reasons. It could be for food, culture, architecture, shopping, or various combinations of these. Today, however, fitness is fast becoming a popular addition to that list. According to a report by the Global Wellness Economy Monitor, there were 830 million wellness-related trips done in 2017 alone. With these numbers, it’s no wonder wellness travel currently represents 17% of total tourism expenditure globally.

And if you’re interested in jumping on this wellness bandwagon, know that there are a variety of luxury wellness destinations all around the world. You’ll notice that each resort serves a specific purpose — from serene meditation-centric yoga retreat to fast-paced luxury boot camps designed to get you out of your slump. Read on to check out some of the top wellness resorts in the world.

Vana

Wellness ResortsThis luxury yoga retreat located amidst mango and lychee orchards in Uttarakhand, India offers programs centered around Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, and Tibetan healing. There are a range of experts ready to assist you in your re-balancing journey, including Ayurvedic doctors, yoga instructors, Tibetan healers, therapists, an acupuncturist, and even an Ayurvedic chef. Whether it’s through private sessions or group classes, the experience is intended to improve one’s health in a holistic sense.

Kamalaya

Luxury Wellness ResortsKamalaya’s fitness program is more gentle in nature since it focuses more on detox and nutrition. This tranquil resort in the beautiful island of Koh Samui, Thailand offers plenty of indulgent spa treatments, such as hydrotherapy, infrared sauna, massages, and more. Their packages also include yoga sessions and nutrition classes.

What’s more, Koh Samui is a tropical paradise, and the accommodations allow guests to bask in the natural beauty surrounding the resort.

Red Mountain Resort

Luxury Wellness ResortsThose aiming to jumpstart their weight loss goals may find the activities in Red Mountain Resort in Utah, USA, very attractive. Red Mountain prides itself in being an “adventure spa” — meaning it offers outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, canyoneering, kayaking, and more. At the end of a long day filled with these activities, guests can also enjoy its luxurious spa and body care treatments.

One of the resort’s packages focuses on a personalized fitness plan for each visitor. Aside from the fitness classes, hiking activities, and meditation workshops, the plan requires private sessions with personal trainers and evaluations from a physician and nutritionist.

Six Senses Douro ValleyLuxury Fitness Resorts

Do you have trouble sleeping? This resort in Portugal offers services that are aimed at giving you a good night’s rest. Its sleep-centered program first assesses your sleep issues before treating you to a range of fitness activities, relaxing sessions, spa treatments, and healthy meals that would help align your circadian rhythms and correct your bedtime routine.

This luxury resort itself is a wonderful feat of craftsmanship as it is a renovated 19th-century chateau sitting on a hill that overlooks vast vineyards. The place not only attracts wellness visitors but also wine enthusiasts.

Wildfitness Health retreat

This healthy getaway is a result of the founder’s vision of setting up her own “jungle gym.” Here, guests go through fitness regimens involving the wilderness in order to hone their skills and move effortlessly in natural environments. Weight training involves lifting stones, while cardio exercises are done barefoot at the beach. There are also obstacle courses that require hunter-gatherer-like movements.

Wildfitness has locations in Menorca, Spain; Crete, Greece; and Somerset, England. The team behind these resorts has also organized retreats in Kenya, Zanzibar, USA, and Costa Rica.

Picking the Right Resort

Wellness Retreat

All in all, determining the best destination ultimately depends on your wellness goals. Since there are a variety of services offered in each resort, it’s advisable to narrow down your choices by looking for the answers to these few questions.

What are the programs offered in the wellness resorts?

Resort

Check if the programs at the Wellness resorts are all-inclusive and whether they suit the type of fitness and training you’re aiming for. Knowing the details of the programs can also help you decide if your body can handle the regimens involved.

Will the wellness resorts support my dietary needs?

Yoga

While many fitness resorts have in-house nutrition experts, it’s still important to check what food they offer. For instance, if you’re on a vegan diet, you may want to steer clear of places that have limited vegan options. Also, those who are currently taking pills to support their weight loss goals may want to double-check their dosage with the experts onsite. On her Detoxi Slim review on Pretty Me, Sheena Dizon advises that such pills sometimes have side effects, which may affect your performance in the program. For instance, bloating and constipation may ruin your mission to de-stress and meditate. If you do take supplements, you’re better off going to fitness boot camps instead of wellness retreats to help aid you in your weight loss journey.

Is there medical support in the wellness resorts?

Many resorts employ physicians among their regular staff. However, it’s good to call ahead and confirm with the resort to see if they are well-equipped to assist you with your specific medical needs, especially if you deal with certain health conditions.

Be it a fitness retreat or a luxury wellness resort or a spa resort or a luxury spa retreat, they should offer a holistic and rejuvenating experience for the mind, body, and soul. 1. Great selection of wellness spas. I’ve never been to one, and it is something I would go to for sure. I’ve always had trouble sleeping and am intrigued by the sleep spa in Portugal.

  2. I got my massage therapy license from the Utah College of Massage Therapy. I am very familiar with Red Mountain Resort and have always wanted to visit there. I was working as an instructor at Alta at the time and the resort was a little more than I could afford at that stage of my life. It sounds like a beautiful property that runs an excellent service.

  3. Yes! You called me out, I am a terrible sleeper so immediately, I would head straight to Six Senses Duoro Valley. Perfect since I haven’t been to Portugal yet. I wasn’t surprised to see that most of these places can accommodate all the different dietary needs but I was surprised to see that a lot of them employ their own physicians. That’s pretty cool!

  4. I have really experienced wellness retreats but would definitely like to try them sometime. I would straight up head to Vana as I love yoga and ayurveda healing. This is a fantastic compilation.

  5. I always wanted to visit these luxury retreat resorts. these are some of the great lists. you should write up some from Dubai as well, it is named after the luxury.

  6. I’ve never been anywhere like this but I’m sure I would get along just perfectly there. 😉 The one in Douro looks like the one I would want to start with. Thanks for sharing the details for something I was not one bit familiar with.

  7. I didn’t realize wellness had such a significant share of the travel market! You’ve offered some great suggestions and selections criteria, here. Personally, Kamalaya would be my first choice, with Six Senses Douro Valley coming in at a close second. Both sound like just the kind of reset I would enjoy!

  8. I have never been to any such luxury resorts. These places seem to be the best to rejuvenate. I would love to start with Vana. Do some of these offer medical facilities too as they have in-house physicians?

  9. Your post made me itching for a wellness spa!. I wish I could be transported to the Vana retreat right now.
A mix of Ayurveda, Tibetan medicine, acupuncture, and yoga would perfectly meet my needs at the moment.

  10. I love luxury wellness resorts as staying there is completely relaxed and peaceful. I would love staying at Vana as it is located in tranquil surroundings of Uttarakhand. Meditating near lychee and mango trees must be amazing.

  11. Great tips and lineup of resorts. Familiar with Red Rocks, though have not gone yet. We are certainly of the adventurous end, so any resort spa would need to offer lots of activities such as paddling, climbing, mountain biking, etc.
