Jaipur – Famous Rajasthan Monuments
The city of Jaipur is in many ways the gateway to the state of Rajasthan. It is one of the vertices that form the famous Golden Triangle circuit of India, the other two being Agra and Delhi. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and one of its prominent cities.
It has its share of historical monuments of Rajasthan and is a much sought-after tourist destination for its forts and palaces. The city that was founded by Sawai Jai Singh II in the year 1727, is today a UNESCO World Heritage City. Here are some of the important historical monuments of the city.

Amer Fort | Amber Fort
One of the iconic landmarks of Jaipur is the Amer Fort, also referred to as Amber Fort or Amber Palace. It is located on the outskirts of Jaipur City. The original fort is believed to have been built by Raja Man Singh, and later expanded by Jai Singh I and other rulers of Jaipur. The Amer Fort has within its ramparts royal residences, Durbar Halls, and other utility spaces. The beautiful Sheesh Mahal or Palace of Mirrors is the best example of its artistic and aesthetic attributes.
City Palace Jaipur
The City Palace dates back to the early 18th century. It became the residence and headquarters of the rulers of Jaipur who moved here from the Amer Fort and Palace in 1727 which was when the city that we now know as Jaipur was founded.
The City Palace is a beautiful blend of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles. It is today a museum that is open to the public, while a part of the Palace is the residence of the descendants of the erstwhile rulers of Jaipur. It is a massive complex that encompasses large courtyards, pavilions, offices, gardens, and temples. Some of the unmissable sights in the City Palace of Jaipur are the Mubarak Mahal, Chandra Mahal, the royal courts, and the Shri Govind Dev Temple.
Hawa Mahal Jaipur
One of the most recognizable images of Jaipur is that of Hawa Mahal, an intriguing and beautiful structure that stands right in the midst of the bustling city. It is actually an extension of the City Palace and extends to the Ladies’ quarters or the Zenana of the palace. Hawa Mahal is a 5-storeyed structure and consists of 953 Jharokhas with intricate latticework. The facade which looks towards the road is actually the back of Hawa Mahal
Nahargarh Fort Jaipur
The Nahargarh Fort is another of the important Rajasthan monuments located in Jaipur. The Nahargarh Fort was constructed by Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh and stands at an elevation overlooking the city. The primary function of Nahargarh Fort was that of a fallback camp, where the King and his retinue could retreat in case of a siege.
Jaigarh Fort Jaipur
The Jaigarh Fort was built as a defence for the Amer Fort and Palace. It stands about 400 metres above the Amer Fort and stretches across 3 kilometres. There is a museum inside the Jaigarh Fort campus. The Jaigarh Fort and the Amer Fort are connected by a subterranean passage.
Jodhpur – Famous Monuments Of Rajasthan
The city of Jodhpur is located about 333 kilometres from Jaipur and is an integral part of Rajasthan’s history. Though the city remains in the shadow of Jaipur, it is home to some of the famous monuments of Rajasthan. Here are 3 of the most notable monuments that you must include in your Jodhpur itinerary.
Mehrangarh Fort Jodhpur
The Mehrangarh Fort is in many ways the epicentre of Jodhpur, both in terms of history as well as contemporary tourism. The massive monument that covers an area of 1,200 acres was built in the mid-15th century by Rao Jodha, the king who founded the city of Jodhpur. The fort complex stands on a hill that overlooks the city and a series of seven gates secure entry to its heart.
Inside the fort complex are some exquisite palaces like Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Phool Mahal and others. There is a museum with several galleries that showcase the lifestyle of the royals. On display in the galleries are Howdahs, Palanquins, Turbans, Weapons, Paintings, and much more.
Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur
The Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur is said to be one of the world’s largest private residences. The magnificent structure is part hotel and part residence of the royal descendants. A small portion of Umaid Bhawan is a museum that is open to the public. There is a collection of vintage cars owned by the royal family on display in the garden opposite the imposing facade of Umaid Bhawan.
Jaswant Thada Jodhpur
The historical Rajasthan monuments have an ethereal and timeless quality that has a romance all its own. This surreal quality extends to the countless cenotaphs of royalty that are scattered across the state. Of particular importance is the Jaswant Thada, a cenotaph that stands opposite the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.
Made in white marble, the structure gleams like a pearl and contrasts with the dull hues of the Mehrangarh Fort. It is a cenotaph that was built in memory of Maharajah Jaswant Singh II by his son Maharajah Sardar Singh. It is the cremation and final resting ground of the Royal family of Marwar. It is a beautiful monument that features fountains, gazebos, and waterbodies.
Jaisalmer – Historical Monuments Of Rajasthan
Jaisalmer, “The Golden City,” of Rajasthan is right on the fringes of the Thar Desert. The city in the midst of the desert was founded by Rawal Jaisal in the year 1156 AD. Jaisalmer has a distinct charm that sets it apart from Jaipur and Jodhpur. The city is like the last frontier before the arid waste of the Thar Desert looms in front of you. There are many places that you must visit in Jaisalmer, here are some of the famous historical monuments in Rajasthan that should be part of your Jaisalmer itinerary.
Jaisalmer Fort
The Jaisalmer Fort is a living fort and the heart and soul of Jaisalmer. It is built in yellow sandstone and assumes a golden halo during twilight. Hence it is also known as Sonar Quila or Swarn Durg or Golden Fort. The fort was built by Rawal Jaisal, the founder of Jaisalmer. There are four pols or enormous gates that secure entry to the Jaisalmer Fort. Within the ramparts of the fort are located the royal palace, numerous Jain and Hindu temples, exquisite Havelis, and residences.
Gadisar Lake Jaisalmer
The Gadisar Lake is another of the enduring Rajasthan monuments that evoke memories of a grand and royal era. The lake was built when the city of Jaisalmer was founded by Rawal Jaisal. The artificial lake was part of a network of interconnected lakes that provided water to the city. The banks of the lake are adorned with many Chhatris and temples. There is an arch that provides entry to the gate on which boating is available. In the evening the history of the city comes alive on the lake in the form of a vibrant sound and light show.
Bada Bagh Jaisalmer
Bada Bagh is a collection of royal Cenotaphs or Chhatris, that have been built by various kings of Jaisalmer. Bada Bagh is located on a hillock. The Cenotaphs of different sizes have been built in memory of the Kings, Queens, Princes, and other members of royalty of the Jaisalmer kingdom.
Patwon Ki Haveli Jaisalmer
The state of Rajasthan has always been a centre of commerce and the business acumen of people from this region is legendary. Thus it comes as no surprise, that it is not just the kings who have built magnificent monuments, but traders and businessmen have built some exquisite monuments. One of the best is a cluster of five havelis, jointly known as Patwon Ki Haveli, located in the heart of Jaisalmer. It is an exquisite building made of yellow sandstone and adorned with exquisite balconies and lattice windows.
Bikaner – Historical Places of Rajasthan
The city of Bikaner remains overshadowed by the more well-known and bigger cities of Rajasthan, like Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer. But Bikaner too has a distinct character of its own and is home to many noteworthy Rajasthan monuments. Junagarh Fort Bikaner
The Junagarh Fort in Bikaner is the prime attraction of the city. The fort was built towards the end of the 16th century. What is unique about this fort is that it is one of the rare forts of Rajasthan that stands on level ground and is not on a hill. What is truly remarkable about this fort is that despite many sieges, the fort remained unconquered, except for a single day, when it was occupied by the son of the Mughal emperor Babur.
The Junagarh fort encloses beautiful palaces, pavilions, and temples, built with red sandstone and marble. The structure is a unique blend of military architecture and exquisite interior decoration. There is a museum which houses various royal paraphernalia.
Rampuria Haveli Bikaner
The Rampuria Haveli is a group of beautiful mansions that were built in the 15th century as residential quarters of the wealthy Rampuria family who were merchants. The havelis have been constructed using red sandstone, and they shine with a timeless lustre even today. The interiors are exquisitely done and contain priceless items of art and furniture.
Karni Mata Temple Bikaner
If you are in Bikaner, you must make a visit to the famous Karni Mata Temple, though not a monument in the real sense of the word, it is a place to be included in your Bikaner itinerary. The Karni Mata temple which is famous as the temple of rats, is dedicated to Karni Mata and is located about 29 kilometres from Bikaner in the village of Deshnok.
Chittorgarh – Historical Places Of Rajasthan
Chittorgarh is one of the important places in the history of Rajasthan and was the capital of the Mewar Kings till the founding of Udaipur by Maharana Udai Singh II. Chittorgarh is home to many historic Rajasthan monuments, most of which lie inside the Chittorgarh Fort, one of the living forts of India and part of the group of Hill Forts of Rajasthan listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Chittorgarh Fort
The Chittorgarh Fort stands upon a hill that overlooks the later settlement of Chittor at a height of about 80 metres. It is spread over an area of approximately 2.8 square kilometres. The Chittorgarh fort is secured by a series of 7 gates or Pols. There are about 65 historical monuments with the fort. These include ruins of palaces, temples, towers, memorials, and water bodies.
Some of the notable monuments are the palaces of Rana Kumbha and Padmini, the Mirabai Temple and the Samadhiswara Temple, the Vijay Sthambh, and the Kirti Sthambh. Chittorgarh is an important destination in Rajasthan for those interested in the history and heritage of the state.
Udaipur – Rajasthan Monuments
Udaipur is one of the most popular cities in Rajasthan and one that attracts national and international tourists in hordes. The city is known for its beautiful lakes and palaces. City Palace Udaipur
The City Palace in Udaipur is synonymous with the city itself. It is the prime attraction of Udaipur and a place that is almost mandatory in any Udaipur itinerary. The City Palace and the city of Udaipur are bonded by history. The palace was built at the same time as the founding of Udaipur by Udai Singh II, in the year 1553. Of course, the palace that is seen today took 400 years to be complete with successive generations of kings expanding and embellishing it.
The City Palace of Udaipur is a series of palaces with an imposing facade. It is an excellent example of the fusion of Rajputana and Mughal architecture. The palace is today a museum which gives visitors a slice of the royal lifestyle of the Kings of Mewar.
Saheliyon Ki Bari Udaipur
Udaipur is as much a city of gardens as it is a city of lakes and palaces. One of the most enchanting of the gardens of Udaipur is the Saheliyon Ki Bari. It is a garden that was built between the years 1710 to 1734, by Maharana Sangram Singh. The garden was for the exclusive purpose of providing recreation for the ladies of the royal family. Fatehsagar Lake Udaipur
The Fatehsagar Lake is one of the iconic landmarks of Udaipur. The Lake is an important element of the lake system that supplies water to Udaipur. The Fatehsagar Lake is manmade and was built towards the end of the 17th century by Maharana Fateh Singh. There are three islands located in the waters of the Fatehsagar Lake, an observatory and park are situated on these islands.
Badi Lake Udaipur
A lesser-known lake located on the outskirts of Udaipur is Badi Lake. A great place to watch a sunset, the place is relatively free of tourists. Ranakpur – Famous Rajasthan Monuments
Ranakpur, a town nestling near the foothills of the Aravallis is a famous Jain pilgrimage centre and is home to beautiful Jain temples and also a Sun Temple.
Ranakpur Jain Temple
The Ranakpur Jain Temple is an exquisite example of Jain temple architecture. It stands like a white pearl against the backdrop of the Aravalli Hills. The temple dates back to the 15th century and was built under the patronage of King Rana Kumbha, by a Jain businessman named Dharna Seth. The magnificent temple is spread over an area of 48,000 square feet consisting of 1444 pillars, 80 domes, 426 columns, and 29 halls.
The Ranakpur Jain temple is dedicated to Rishabhnatha, also known as Adinatha, the first Tirthankar of Jainism. Though this temple is the main temple, there are also temples to Neminath and Parshawnath, within the larger premises of the temple. Ranakpur Sun Temple
Sun temples always hold a strange fascination. Just outside the premises of the Ranakpur Jain Temple, stands a small but beautiful Sun Temple. It is not as exquisite as the Sun temple of Modhera or the Katarmal Sun temple, but has a simple and endearing charm.

Kumbhalgarh – Historical Places In Rajasthan
Rajasthan is a place where history confronts you at every twist and turn. One of the most historical places in Rajasthan is Kumbhalgarh. The place is known for its imposing fort as well as for being the birthplace of one of the most popular figures from Indian history, Maharana Pratap. Kumbhalgarh, apart from the imposing fort compiled, also has over 300 Hindu and Jain temples.
Kumbhalgarh Fort
The iconic Kumbhalgarh Fort is also referred to as the “Great Wall of India.” It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the grouping, “Hill Forts of Rajasthan.” The fort was built by Rana Kumbha and has a perimeter that extends to a humongous 36 kilometres! It is said to be one of the longest walls in the world.
The Kumbhalgarh fort complex consists of palaces, temples, and other structures, at an altitude of about 3,600 feet. A series of gates lead to the top of the fort which has the residential palaces.
Vedi Temple Kumbhalgarh
Among the many temples that lie scattered around the Kumbhalgarh Fort, the Vedi temple is the most intriguing one. The Vedi Temple complex stands at ground level near the foot of the fort. It is believed to have been built by Rana Kumbha after the fort was built. The temple is believed to have served as the venue for various Vedic rites after the fort was built.
