Statue of Unity – Genesis And Construction
As we stood at the giant feet of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, immortalized as the Statue of Unity, we could not help, but marvel at the at the vision, dedication, and engineering mastery that brought this extraordinary monument to life. The Statue of Unity did not emerge overnight; it was the result of years of planning, artistic refinement, and technological innovation. Understanding how this monumental idea was conceived, developed, and ultimately realised adds a deeper layer of appreciation to the experience of witnessing it in person. The story of its creation is a testament to India’s collective ambition—a fusion of national pride, modern engineering, and timeless artistry.
The journey of the Statue of Unity—from an ambitious idea to a global architectural triumph—is as inspiring as the leader it honours. The genesis of the project can be traced to the early 2010s, when the Government of Gujarat envisioned a monumental tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whose statesmanship and unifying spirit had laid the foundation for modern India. The idea was not merely to erect a statue, but to create a living symbol of national harmony that would inspire generations. In 2013, this vision gained definitive momentum when the project was formally announced, setting into motion one of the most ambitious engineering endeavours in India’s history.
A global design competition was launched, ultimately awarding the project to Padma Bhushan awardee Ram V. Sutar, one of India’s most distinguished sculptors. His design depicted Sardar Patel in a purposeful forward stride, reflecting his role in guiding India through the challenging years of post-Independence integration. The conceptualisation was followed by extensive research, including the study of hundreds of archival photographs, speeches, and clothing details to ensure historical accuracy and emotional authenticity.
Construction began in October 2014 under the stewardship of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a powerhouse in engineering and infrastructure. The scale of the project demanded a blend of traditional artistry and cutting-edge technology. More than 3,000 workers, including engineers, architects, masons, and skilled sculptors, laboured across continents to realise the vision. The outer façade of the statue was crafted using over 6,500 bronze panels, cast in a foundry in China and assembled in India to match the intricate sculptural detailing envisioned by Sutar. Beneath this gleaming exterior lies a robust inner structure of reinforced concrete, structural steel, and a sophisticated dual-core system designed to withstand powerful winds, heavy vibrations, and seismic activity.
After four years of relentless work, the statue rose to its full height of 182 metres, symbolising not only the age-old unity of India but also the country’s modern scientific prowess. On 31 October 2018, the Statue of Unity was inaugurated by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, marking the culmination of a vision that sought to immortalise Sardar Patel’s legacy. Today, the monument stands as a testament to human ingenuity, collective effort, and the enduring strength of national unity.
Visiting The Statue of Unity – Key Attractions Within The Premises
We followed our Guide Shri Dharmesh Tadvi, across the mammoth concourse that led to the Statue of Unity. Four travellators ensured smooth and speedy acess to the base of the statue, if you so preferred. Being guests of the Ministry of Tourism, Dharmeshbhai had got SOU Express Entry tickets for us, this ensured skip the line access for us.
As we approached the colossal likeness of India’s Iron Man, the sun draped the statue’s face in a radiant, almost ethereal glow—an unforgettable sight that sent a shiver of awe down our spine. Children darted about with unbridled excitement, elders looked on with quiet pride, and every visitor stood spellbound by the awe-inspiring presence of the engineering marvel rising before them.
As we stood beneath the gargantuan shadow of the Statue of Unity, our knowledgable and affable guide from the Statue of Unity Area Development and Tourism Governance Authority, Shri Dharmesh Tadvi filled us in on intersting details about the Sttatue of Unity. He informed us that the Statue of Unity stands on what was once an island in the Narmada River, known as Sadhu Bet. A 300 metre long bridge was first built to connect the island of Sadhy Bet to the mainland, and thereafter the Statue of Unity took sheape.
He also informed us that we would be first visiting the Exhibition Gallery that was located at the Ground level, after which we would proceed to the viewing gallery that was located near the chest level of the Statue of Unity, followed by paying our respects at the feet of the Statue of Unity.

Our guide Shri Dharmesh Tadvi informed us that this measured about 14 feet in height while the acttual one atop the Statue of Unity was five times larger, measuring 70 feet.
Equally captivating is the section dedicated to the making of the Statue of Unity. Detailed engineering models, time-lapse videos, construction blueprints, and scale replicas reveal the monumental effort behind creating the world’s tallest statue. Interactive displays explain the complex internal structure, bronze cladding, and the innovative systems engineered to withstand winds, vibrations, and seismic activity.
