We were visiting the temple as part of our Saputara itinerary in which we were covering the many attractions of Saputara and other places in the Dang district of Gujarat.

Shabri Dham Mandir – The Legend of Shabari

The Shabari Dham Mandir is associated with the legend of Shabari. It is a fascinating story of patience, love, and devotion. In the Aranya Kanda of the Ramayana, after the abduction of Sita, Rama and Lakshmana set out in search of her. They reach the banks of the Pampa Sarovar, where they meet an old tribal lady by the name of Shabari.

Shabari was a devoted woman who served the sage Matanga in his ashram. She was very devoted to the saint and when he died, she too had wanted to depart the mortal world. However, the learned sage Matanga, told her that her time had not yet come. She was destined to experience the bliss of darshan of Lord Vishnu who would come in his incarnation as Rama. The years rolled by and Shabari became old and emaciated, but she waited for Lord Rama. When Rama and Lakshmana arrived, she was blinded with devotion and fell at the Lord’s feet.

She offered fruits that she had personally tasted to ensure they were sweet to Rama and Lakshmana. Rama accepted the fruit without any qualms as they spoke volumes of her devotion. He blessed her, and she entered a fire to leave the mortal world and ascend to the heavens.

The black clouds seemed to have won the game of Tag, they completely covered the sky, and we felt the rain drops as we proceeded towards the Shabari Dham Mandir. The drops soon grew to drizzle. However, luckily the drizzle did not turn into a torrent.

The rain enhanced the beauty of the picturesque Shabari Dham Mandir and its surroundings. A rainbow which suddenly materialized from nowhere behind the Shikhar of a Shiva temple within the Shabari temple complex lent a surreal aura to the moment.

The main temple within the Shabari Dham Mandir has beautiful idols that depict Shabari kneeling down with devotion at the feet of Ram and Lakshman who are seated in front of her. Three stones which are believed to be the ones on which the three had sat during their meeting in the Treta Yuga are also kept here and worshipped.

Some 10 kilometres from the Shabaridham temple is located a small waterfall with a stream which is known as Pampa Sarovar and has a small temple with the image of Sage Matanga. It is believed that Shabari who used to stay in the ashram of the sage Matanga, met Ram and Lakshman here.

If you want to have a panoramic view of the area surrounding the Shabari Dham temple, you can climb onto the terrace of the temple for spectacular views of the countryside.

It is interesting to note that during our visit to Anegundi near Hampi in Karnataka, we learned that the place is believed to be the Kishkinda mentioned in the Ramayana. There is a lake known as Pampa Sarovara near this place with many temples. The birthplace of Hanuman is also believed to here on a hill known as Anjanadri. Near Hampi, there is a hill by the name of Matanga Hill, which is believed to be the place where the sage Matanga had lived.
