There are many beautiful places strewn across The Dang district in Gujarat of which, Saputara is a part. We had an enchanting experience of Saputara and other places in the Dang district during the three days that we spent there.

We reached Saputara almost close to midnight. It was raining heavily, and as it was dark we had no inkling of its spectacular beauty. The morning brought with it a heavy layer of mist that covered the valley. However, as the day progressed, the mist cleared revealing the exquisitely lush valley that stretched out below the Toran Hotel, where we stayed during our Saputara trip.

The rain-washed road winding through the hills, the emerald trees awash in a sheen of silver, were magnets that pulled us to their fold. We yielded to temptation and took a walk in the rain. This is something that you must do if you are visiting Saputara in the monsoon. It is an experience that you are sure to cherish for a long time.

Our Saputara itinerary was packed as there were so many places to see in and around Saputara. Here are the places that you must visit in Saputara.

Saputara Lake | Sarpaganga Lake – Saputara Hill Station

The lake happens to be the epicentre of Saputara town, as it is in most hill stations of India. Most activities revolve around the diameter of the lake. It is a place that is buzzing with tourists and commercial activity. If you are looking for some fun and are travelling with kids, the Saputara Lake also known as Sarpaganga Lake is just for you.

You can stop for a bite and a hot cup of tea in any of the eateries that are clustered around the lake.

You can indulge in the various activities available on and near the lake, or if you, so fancy, you can just watch the boats gliding past the placid waters of the lake. You may also find a couple of ducks wading towards you, curiosity writ large on their faces.

Table Point Saputara – Saputara Hill Station

The Table Point is a popular place in Saputara. It is from near here that the cable cars carrying tourists to the sunrise point operate. We had to abort our first attempt to visit the Table Point, as there was heavy mist and visibility was poor. However, the next day dawned bright and clear, and we were able to visit the Table Point. Light vehicles can make it right to the top.

However, if it is a bus or any other heavy vehicle, you would need to walk a couple of kilometres. The road that leads to Table Point is quite steep.

The climb up the steep road is well worth it as you are rewarded with spectacular views of the valley as well as Saputara Lake. The Table Point as the name suggests is a plateau on top of a hill known as Governor Hill. There are activities here that can be enjoyed by kids and families.

There are many eateries where one can snack at the Table Point. You can spend time at the Table Point before heading to the sunset point which can be accessed by a cable car ride.

Sunset Point – Saputara Hill Station

An exhilarating cable car ride takes you to the sunset point which is located on one of the peaks in Saputara. As you dangle in mid-air, stretched out below you are green pastures, grazing horses and sheep, a road winding itself through the hills, and buildings that look straight out of Legoland.

The sunset point is a vast flat piece of land on the top of a hill that affords excellent panoramic views of the valley below. There are refreshment stalls here where you can relax with a cup of ginger tea or snacks while enjoying the sunset and the breathtaking views.

Sunrise Point – Saputara Hill Station

There is a sunrise point at an elevated patch of land not far from the Jain temple. The place is the best viewpoint for watching a sunrise. An early morning rigorous trek up the sunrise point rewards you with the magical experience of a glorious sunrise. However, this again depends on the time of the season that you are visiting, and the weather conditions at that time.

Rose Garden – Saputara Hill Station

Saputara nestles in the midst of immense natural beauty all around. It is embellished by verdant forest land and water bodies. Man-made gardens serve to enhance the beauty of the surroundings. One such popular garden in Saputara is the Rose Garden. As the name suggests the garden is dedicated to roses that are in full bloom in spring.

The Rose Garden is well landscaped and has some nice spots for taking pictures.

Each step is home to different species of colourful flowers and other plants. The woodwork of the steps is another interesting feature not to be missed when you are at the Step Garden.

It is a popular picnic spot that has a recreation centre for kids, there are wooden shacks in the garden for the use of tourists.

Lake Garden – Saputara Hill Station

A beautiful garden along with a children’s play area is located adjacent to Saputara Lake and is a perfect place to relax and feel the vibes of the lake. It is a popular spot with tourists and is usually filled with kids making merry under the watchful eyes of their parents.

Jain Temple | Gajabhishek Jain Tirth – Saputara Hill Station

If you thought that Saputara is all about nature, a typical hill station, then think again. We were pleasantly surprised to find a Jain temple with exquisite carvings that housed a 500-year old idol of the 23rd Jain Tirthankara, Parshvantha.

The Jain temple is known as Gajabhishek Jain Tirth and Parshvanatha is worshipped here as Chintamani Parshvanatha.

A board in Gujarati near the entrance to the temple informs that the temple houses the miraculous and self-manifested statue of Chintamani Parshvanatha which is 500 years old.

Jain temples are characterized by beautiful architectural design and exquisite marble carvings and sculptures. Be it the Ranakpur Jain temple or the Khajuraho Jain temples, they stun you with their sheer magnificence. Jain temple at Saputara does not disappoint you on this front either. It has a beautiful domed ceiling and exquisite intricate carvings.

Two ornamented elephants flank the entrance to the Mandapa that leads to the Garba Griha. If you are interested in temple architecture and heritage, then do not miss visiting the Gajabhishek Jain Tirth in Saputara.

Nageshwar Mahadev Temple | Shiva Temple – Saputara Hill Station

Shiva temples have a special aura and are surrounded by fascinating legends and myths. Be it the iconic Somnath temple in Gujarat or the ancient Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu, each has its own unique character and mystique.

Though not in the same league as these iconic temples, the Nageshwar Mahadev temple too has its own legend.

“Many years ago there lived a Baba (saint) here, he informed everyone that there was a Shiv Ling at the bottom of the Sarpasagar Lake. Miraculously a Shiv Ling was found and this temple known as Nageshwar Mahadev temple built.” informed our guide Nirav.

The Nageshwar Mahadev Temple Saputara, not to be confused with the famous Jyotirlinga temple of the same name in Dwarka was built in 1992. It is a small but nice temple. It is built in the Nagara style of architecture and has a raised platform. An Ardha Mandapa followed by an Antarala lead to the Garbha Griha which is crowned with a Shikhara.

A Shiva Linga occupies centre stage inside the Sanctorum and is worshipped as the form of Nageshwar Mahadev. The temple which stands on the edge of Saputara Lake is a tranquil spot, away from the hustle and bustle that one observes near the commercial end of the lake.

Honey Bee Centre – Saputara Hill Station

There is a small Honey Bee centre with an apiary. It is an interesting place with boxes in which bees are reared. Information about the bees is provided in visuals that are provided near the bee enclosures. There is a shop here where you can buy pure honey as well as other local products.

Echo Point – Saputara Hill Station

Echo Point is located beyond Sunrise Point and requires strong legs and stamina as it involves quite a bit of uphill trekking. It is a place where not many tourists go, hence if you are up for some rigorous exercise and want to enjoy some spectacular views in solitude, Echo Point is for you. As the name indicates sound bounces of a neighbouring hill and creates an echo.

Museums are windows that allow you to peep into the history, lifestyle, and culture of a place and its people. The Saputara Museum, also known as Tribal Museum is one such museum that showcases the tribal ethos of the Dangs district.

The Saputara Museum showcases the rich heritage, art, and lifestyles of the tribes of the Dangs district. The exhibits at the museum include wood carvings, stuffed birds, ornaments, musical instruments, masks that are used in tribal dances, and many other artefacts used by the tribes of the region.

It is interesting to note that the museum also conducts workshops with a view to preserve and encourage tribal art and handicrafts.

Trekking

The terrain of Saputara lends itself to some very satisfying as well as challenging trekking experiences. Treks to the sunrise point and Echo point are the ones that most people do. However, one can head into the woods or follow one of the lesser trodden tracks or roads for an awesome experience in the midst of nature,

Boating

Boating is a fun activity for kids and families at Saputara Lake. The lake is filled with excited tourists gliding away to their hearts’ content in pedal boats. The boats and the Lake remind you of the lakes in other hill stations of India like Ooty, Kodaikanal, and Uttarakhand.

Cycling

Colourfully decorated with flowers, cycles with single and multiple seats riveted our attention near the Saputara Lake. We saw kids and their parents, couples, and curious millennials hopped on to these cycles for a ride around the periphery of the lake.

Small battery-operated cars and bikes and Segway are also available for kids to have a fun ride. Camel and horse rides too can be experienced,

Paragliding in Saputara

If you are an adrenaline junkie looking for some thrilling adventure while in Saputara, then Paragliding amidst the lush green hills is for you. Paragliding is a popular activity for adventure enthusiasts seeking an adrenaline rush when in Saputara. However, paragliding is subject to weather conditions. It was not available when we were there owing to misty weather conditions and rain.

Other adventure activities that are available in Saputara are Ziplining, Rappelling, Rock Climbing, etc..

There are many beautiful Places near Saputara that you must include in your Saputara itinerary. The Dang district is referred to as the “Kashmir of Gujarat,” and not without reason. It is one of the most enchanting districts of Gujarat richly endowed with natural beauty. Apart from Saputara Hill Station, the district has a mesmerizing array of attractions. Here are some of the places near Saputara that you must visit.

U-Turn Point

No, the U-Turn point has nothing to do with traffic! It is actually a picturesque spot where a river decides to take a U-turn. It was a wonderful sight that stretched out below as we stepped out from our bus. An island covered with lush vegetation was the place where the Purna River curved and wandered away after completing a perfect U-Turn.

The U-Turn Point is a nice place to have a quick picnic. There are gazebos that overlook the U-turn and are perfect places to relax and have a snack or two. The U-Turn point is located on the Girmal road that leads to the Girmal waterfalls. It is less than 5 kilometres before Girmal falls.

Girmal Falls

The waters of the Gira River plunge down over rocky terrain in picturesque surroundings to form the highest waterfall of Gujarat, the Girmal falls. The majesty of the waterfalls can be witnessed from afar, there is a safety railing built near the falls, and one can walk along a path right up to where the water cascades down from the rocks.

However, one cannot go down to where the waterfall hits the ground, this is not considered safe either. Monkeys are on the prowl near the place where gazebos have been built with a view of the falls and you need to be careful of your belongings. The Girmal waterfalls have a height of about 100 feet and is a nice place to enjoy the serenity of nature in the Dangs district.

The falls can be seen in their full flow during the monsoon. Two distinct cascades jump across the rocky terrain creating an illusion of two thick silver lines drawn on the rock face.

Gira Falls Saputara | Gira Dhodh Saputara

Another spectacular waterfall that impressed us even more than the Girmal waterfalls is the Gira Falls or Gira Dhodh near Saputara. Though the height of these falls at about 75 feet is much less than that of the Girmal falls, what makes these waterfalls spectacular is their width. The waters of the River Ambika plummet down in two distinct partitions.

The Gira waterfalls look like a scaled-down version of the Niagara Falls and are sometimes referred to as, “Gujarat’s Niagara Falls.

The major one presents a stunning sight with a wide sheet of water dropping down in a misty haze while at a little distance is another beautiful cascade.

There is a viewing platform at a distance, but one can take a rocky path right up to the bottom of the walls, well almost. as a safety measure, the stream formed by the falls is fenced away with a rope and crossing the rope is strictly prohibited.

You can get a close view and better photo angles from the rocks that face the falls. There are many shops selling bamboo craft, and other local produce along the path that leads to the falls.

Shabari Dham

The Ramayana and the Mahabharata are two epics that are integrated into the collective psyche of India. Based on the incidents in both the great epics, there are many places across India that are believed to have a connection with them. One such place is near Saputara in Dangs district. This is a peaceful temple complex that seems to be in the middle of nowhere.

It is a temple built at a place where it is believed that Shabari welcomed Shri Ram with fruits that she had personally picked and tasted before offering to the Lord. The temple is a very tranquil place that soothes the senses and rejuvenates the mind.

As we were leaving Shabari Dham, we were rewarded with the sight of a rainbow that arched across the temple like the bow of Lord Rama, himself, making its presence felt in the sky in a surreal manner.

We also got to experience a magical sunset on our way back to our hotel in Saputara.

Waghai Botanical Gardens

A garden spread over a massive area of 24 Ha and housing the endemic flora of the Dang District. That is the Waghai Botanical Garden for you. Located close to the town of Waghai, the Botanical Garden is a haven of nature and biodiversity.

The lovely and sprawling Waghai Botanical Garden is divided into different plots based on the flora in that particular plot.

The largest plot in the garden is known as Arogyavan and has over 200 different species of herbs, shrubs, and trees that have medicinal properties and are used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Some of the other major plots in the Waghai Botanical Garden include the Bamboo Plot which has about 21 different species of Bamboo. The Dang Plot has the endemic plant species of the Dang district that are found in its forests, there are more than 400 such species in this plot. There is also an Orchid Plot, Palm Plot, Tuber Plot, Fruit Plot, and many others.

One of the important landmarks within the Waghai Botanical Garden is the Pragvad which is a Banyan tree with the botanical name of Ficus Microcarpa. this tree is considered very auspicious by Hindus and is associated with Lord Shiva. According to legend, Lord Brahma gained Brahmagyan while sitting under a tree of this species.

Many of the revered saints got enlightenment under these trees and hence the trees occupy a hallowed status. The tree which is known as Pragvad in Gujarati is believed to be the only one of its kind in Gujarat.

The Waghai Botanical Garden makes a compete day outing and apart from its sprawling campus filled with colourful butterflies, there are many activities for kids. These include a toy train that takes visitors around the campus. The Garden makes for an ideal family getaway and a great place to acquaint kids with the different members of the plant kingdom.

The Tribals of Saputara – #VocalForLocal | Dang Darbar

The Dang district is a tribal region with a rich tribal culture and heritage. Over 90 % of the population of Dang is tribal. There are more than 13 tribes that inhabit the Dang region. The major tribes of the Dang district now are Warli, Kunbi, Kathodi, and Kotwadiya.

The Dangs and its history is inextricably linked with its Teak forests. The rich produce of its forests has always provided sustenance to the tribals. If you take a look back in history, you shall be astounded to know that the 5 tribes of Dang came together to oppose the British.

In fact, this confederacy of tribes actually defeated the British! So Dang was technically never ruled by the British.

The British coveted the natural wealth of Dang including its Teak trees, so they entered into a treaty with the 5 kings of the Dang region in the year 1842. This treaty allowed them access to the forests of Dang and in return, they would pay 3,000 silver coins to the tribal kings.

The kings would be honoured in a festival that was spread over 15 days and known as the Dang Darbar and presented with the silver coins. The treaty that the 5 kings of Dang signed with the British is honoured to this day. In fact, the hereditary rulers of Dang are the only kings recognized by the Government.

Even though the privy purse was abolished, the tribal kings of Dang still get their annual hereditary pension in a 3-day ceremonial cultural extravaganza. This is the present-day Dang Darbar that happens annually around Holi in Ahwa.

The 5 tribal kings arrive in horse-drawn carriages amidst much fanfare and cheers from the tribals from over 300 villages who congregate in Ahwa for the occasion. The Dang Darbar also sees a colourful display of tribal dance and music.

The tribals of Dang live by the forests. They collect Honey, cultivate their land, and also craft beautiful objects from Bamboo. Ragi, known locally as Nagli is a staple crop of the region. Many women are engaged in making products from Nagli which are available in the local market.

The tribals are focused on sustainable economic development. A case in point is a bakery run by a group of 10 tribal women in the Nadgakhadi village of Dang. The women pooled in their savings to start a bakery known as, “Apna Bakery,” The bakery is focused on making food products from Nagli (Ragi).

These include Biscuits like the famous Nankhatai, toast, and Papad. Indeed the tribals of Dang are silent and unsung examples of the #vocalforlocal initiative. As travellers, travelling to Saputara or anywhere else in Dang, the least we can do is buy these local products and contribute our mite towards the region’s sustainable development.

Heritage Train From Bilimora To Waghai | Train To Saputara

There is a narrow-gauge heritage train service between Bilimora and Waghai run by the Western Railway. From Waghai, Saputara is about 50 kilometers. The train is not only of great convenience to the locals of the Dangs district, but it is also a great experience for tourists visiting Saputara.

The train journey is about 3 hours. The exterior of the train is decorated with the traditional Warli paintings of the region. The train includes a special fully reserved air-conditioned tourist coach.
