Posters of these legends of Science along with information about their achievements is what catches your eye in the sprawling campus, and sets the tone for exciting discoveries that await you.

The Science City requires a full day to explore all its attractions. We had limited time at our disposal and could visit just a few of the attractions. Aquatic Gallery

It seems like a scene straight from a Hollywood Science Fiction movie. An escalator takes you to the basement level where sliding glass doors noiselessly slide open, to let you in. You step into a semi-dark world bathed in bluish light. Colourful fishes of varying sizes swim around you in giant tanks.

You are in the “Oceans of the World,” zone, of the Aquatic Gallery, the unique and massive Aquarium in Science City Ahmedabad.

The Aquatic Gallery is spread over a massive area of about 15,000 square feet. Its main attraction is a 28-metre long tunnel, with a large oceanarium. You experience here the marine ecosystems and get to meet some of the aquatic species from across the world.

The Aquatic Gallery with its state of art facilities and futuristic design ranks among the top aquariums in Asia. It houses offer 180 different species of aquatic creatures in its more than 70 big and small tanks.

If some of the aquatic creatures have your attention riveted with their sheer colour and beauty, others mesmerize you with their looks, shape, or size. The Aquatic Gallery is divided into 10 zones that are categorized as the Asian Zone, African Zone, Indian Zone, Oceans of the World, etc. The tunnel gives a unique and immersive experience of being really close to the fascinating creatures of the underworld.

One of the unique attractions at the Science City Aquatic Gallery that is sure to touch your heart is the cute Penguins. These are Africa Penguins (Spheniscus Demersus), that are found on the coasts of South Africa. The general myth around Penguins is that they can survive only in sub-zero temperatures. However, this applies only to the species that are endemic to Antarctica.

The Penguins from Africa thrive in temperate climates, and hence they live in a zone where the temperature is controlled to around 18 degrees, at the Gujarat Science City.

The Penguins were the cynosure of all eyes with their antics. They wobbled across to the edge of the water before taking a plunge and kept the visitors engrossed. It was difficult to take our eyes off the Penguins, as we made our way to the next attraction at the Science City.

Robotics Gallery

A towering figure of a, “Transformer,” based on the Hollywood Science Fiction franchise series called Transformers, greets you near the entrance to the Robotics Gallery. Once you are inside, you get a taste of what the future may unfold.

The Robot Gallery displays Robots who can be seen in action. Some welcome visitors with folded hands in the traditional Namaste greeting. Some dance to the tunes of music, and answer simple queries. In one of the galleries, the application of robots in a shopping mall, was demonstrated.

The robot acts as a guide who takes visitors to the specific section that they are interested in, and also serve as attendants to carry goods. Of special interest to kids is the Sport-o-mania section where tiny robots that look like, “Minions,” engage in a game of football.

Another stellar attraction within the Robotics Gallery is the Robot Cafe, where food, prepared by Robot Chefs is served by Robot waiters. With over 200 robots, the Robotics Gallery is indeed your tryst with the future at the Science City.

During our visit to the Science City Ahmedabad, owing to the paucity of time, what we experienced was just the tip of the iceberg. We left the sprawling campus with many of its attractions unexplored. However, we left with a resolve to return again to fully experience the world of science that this modern-day temple, housed within its fold.
