About Spectacular Nuranang Falls

Spectacular Nuranang Falls Near Tawang Arunachal Pradesh

The pristine land of Arunachal Pradesh is embellished with many small and big waterfalls that add to its idyllic beauty. On our journey across Arunachal Pradesh with Holiday Scout, we saw many a minor waterfall, but the Pièce de résistance was the majestic Nuranang falls.

Though we have seen many waterfalls across India including the famous Jog Falls of Karnataka, Dudhsagar falls near Goa, and many others elsewhere in the world, the beauty, and grandeur of Nuranang Falls seemed unparalleled.

The falls are also referred to as Phong- Phongma waterfall, or Jang Waterfall. Some sources also refer to it as Bong Bong Falls. The falls are located near the town of Jang, about 30 kilometres before Tawang near the road that connects Tawang with Sela Pass, Dirang, and Bomdila.

The Nuranang River originates from the higher reaches of the Sela Pass and its waters cascade down as the spectacular Nuranang Falls for its rendezvous with the Tawang Chu river, which later flows into Bhutan. Nuranang Falls height is about 100 metres and the water pours down over steep rocks. We are sure reading about Nuranang Falls is sure to make you pack your bags to visit this beautiful gem of Arunachal Pradesh.

The Legend Of Spectacular Nuranang Falls Arunachal Pradesh

Nuranang Waterfall Jang Tawang
Nuranang Waterfall, Jang Tawang

A local legend traces the name of Nuranang falls to that of a local girl named Nura and the events of the 1962 Indo-China war. The war saw the Indian army fighting valiantly to defend the country against the invading Chinese forces all across Arunachal Pradesh including Bumla Pass, Sela Pass, Bomdila, and other places.

The 4th Garwhal Rifles was guarding the Indian post near what is known as Sela pass today when the Chinese attacked. The brave Indian soldiers repulsed back two charges by the enemy, however, a Medium Machine Gun had been brought close to the Indian defences and was inflicting heavy damage. Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat along with two others volunteered to silence the Machine Gun fire.

The gun was silenced, and Jaswant Singh returned with the machine gun, though he was himself injured in the process and his two colleagues, Lance Naik Trilok Singh Negi, and Rifleman Gopal Singh Gusain lost their lives.

It was then that the 4th Garhwal Rifles was asked to withdraw, however, Rifleman Jaswant Singh remained at his post staving off the Chinese attack for 72 hours, before being killed. According to local myth, he was helped by two local girls named Sela and Nura, Sela was later killed and Nura was captured.

It is believed that the Nuranang Falls is named after the brave girl Nura who fought alongside Rifleman Jaswant Singh. Sela Pass is believed to be named after the brave girl Sela. Jaswant Garh War Memorial has been built to honour the memory of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat.

Visiting Spectacular Nuranang Falls Arunachal Pradesh

Jung Waterfalls Arunachal Pradesh

Visiting the spectacular Nuranang Falls of Arunachal Pradesh is easily one of the highlights of our long road trip that took us from Guwahati in Assam to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh and back. We can still hear the roar of the falls and feel the cold spray of the water, such then was the spell that the Nuranang or Jang waterfalls cast on us.

When we reached the parking area of Nuranang Falls after a long and eventful drive from Dirang, it was around 4 PM. Considering that sunset happens early in these parts, we could say that it was evening. There is a nominal entry fee to visit the Nuranang falls, and once you have shown your ticket at the entrance, you cross a small wooden bridge and start your descent to the spectacular Nuranang Falls.

There were about 50-odd steps to descend, and we found them quite safe and negotiable, as opposed to some information that we had seen on the internet. The same, however, could not be said about the weather. The sun was nowhere to be seen and the sky was fully covered with grey clouds.

And suddenly we stood right in front of a massive rock face almost vertical towering to a height of about 100 metres, and a huge deluge of water was pouring down from the top. This was the spectacular Nuranang Falls. The wind howled and the water from the falls drenched us to the skin. But we did not even notice it as we stood transfixed, mesmerized by the majestic waterfalls, marvelling at this miracle, engineered by nature.

We gazed and gazed, and our wonder grew, it was one of those moments when you feel that paradise is nowhere else, but right here. We spent some paradisiacal moments just imbibing the thrill of the moment. It was only after this that we reached for our cameras and phones to freeze those moments for posterity. However it was no easy task, as the spray of the water was so heavy, the camera lenses were getting fogged.

There is some open space near the base of the waterfalls, where wooden benches have been arranged for visitors to sit and enjoy the sight of the falls. But the benches were empty and completely drenched. What added to the sheer beauty of the moment, was that there was no one else there and we had the massive Nuranang falls all to ourselves. There was a lone vendor selling snacks, but he too soon shut shop for the day and left.

We were at the Nuranang waterfalls in September, just towards the end of the monsoon and could see the falls in full flow in all its grandeur. After spending a scintillating thirty-odd minutes at the waterfalls, we headed back to our car, to drive to Tawang town where we would be spending a couple of days.

The Nuranang falls temperature had dropped by the time we left, and we were literally shivering on our boots, but the moments that we had experienced would bring a warm glow to our eyes, whenever we remembered them.
